I'm tired of hearing people ask where I'm from and disbelieve that I am in fact a native Canadian. I apparently sound American...I get told very often. I don't know what that even means. I can't hear a difference in how Canadians and Americans (unless they're texan, southern, new yorker, etc) speak...I have very little ear for accents.
I now just say I'm from Alberta, by way of explanation if I don't sound like I'm from Ottawa (I lived in Alberta for two years and Ottawa for 12, but whatever). But many still don't buy it. Some American customers think I sound "californian", but usually it's just the Canadian fellows who presume me to be a Yank.
I have a nasal voice, and I guess it gets twangy sometimes or something. Maybe all my movie watching...I also am not native Quebecois, so sometimes I just think the total lack of French to my accent makes me sound different (honestly, out of 70+ girls who work at my club, I think I am one of 3 who really isn't french)...
anyway, should I just play it up? Make myself sound exotic? If they ask, just pretend? Many out of towners love the "montreal" girls, and since I'm clearly not one of them, I could try to stand out in my own way...But I know some folks are not as fond of Americans, but less so here than Europe...any thoughts? Worth my while? They so often think I'm lying that I'm not, might as well just go along with it perhaps?
