getting grilled by a bank teller
I just went to the bank, and admittedly I deposited more than I usually do (4000), I was taken aback when the teller said "and where did you get this money?". I said "I'm an independent contractor. I get paid in cash, save it up, and deposit it after a while", or something. And she's gets this look on her face, "ohh, and what is your job?". "I'm an entertainer..." "ohh, how nice". This big awful smile crossed her face, and I know she was thinking "hooker". Whatever, but I thought it was kinda bitchy.
I don't care what they think I do. I usually try for the younger, male tellers, because they never ask. I get looks from the women, but never before the questions...I guess I'm just worried. Could this be trouble? Could this get me flagged for an audit or something? Is there a smarter way to go about depositing cash?
It's not the embarrassment, but the potential bad news of this that is bothering me.

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Shit, I only made a 1,000 dollar deposit and the lady said "Money must be growing on trees or something outside". You know, business owners make large deposits all the time, most probably not all cash. But it is absolutely none of the teller's business. Next time she asked this question, I would simply respond "That's none of your business". If she still had a problem with it I would take my money elsewhere.
My husband has this problem with his checks saying the name of the club on them. The teller is always asking him a million questions about stripping. He always hates going to the bank now, lol.

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
I don't think it's anyone's place to ask about your money. That is just RUDE! I had a bank teller make a comment because I was cashing a $2000 check one time about "I wish that was my check." It made me feel like a criminal just to be cashing a check.

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Next time I would sarcastically say I am a drug dealer.

In some US states, there are now laws in place which would require the bank to make a report to the state income tax agency / IRS / Homeland security when a cash transaction of this magnitude is made. This is typically followed by a computer cross-check that a tax return bearing the same person's name and Social Security number as on the bank account filed a tax return last year ! I have no idea if similar anti-money laundering laws are now in effect in Canada, or what the threshold amount might be.
At any rate, these days it is a good idea to try and keep ALL cash transactions under the $1000 mark if you wish to avoid attention.

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Yea really...
Teller: "And where did you get this money?"
Greggy: "I blew it out my ass."
It's none of her damned business. If that ever happens again, let them know it's none of their business. Say, "I stole if from yo' daddy last night!" Hehehe... seriously though, reading this just pisses me off. I wish a teller would do that to me.. I'm gonna save up $4000 just to deposit to get them to say something... ::greggy goes off on a rant::
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Just say it's none of her business -- because it's not.
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
No, I was just joking, don't really tell them you are a drug dealer. Mel is right it will definately attract LE attention, lol. I like the "I blew out of my ass" idea though, heheheh ;D

Well if you do a cash transaction larger than $3000 in New York State, they WILL say something ... to the NY State Income Tax people (who will then pass it on to the IRS) !

That's a joke - don't be so uptight!
Just come back with "they are all to rare for me too!" or something like that.

Go through the business line - they are use to large deposits and won't bother saying shit.
That kind of deposit will generate idle curiousity cuz they want to know how to make that kind of money too!

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Say to them:
"If you wish me to fill out a form for the IRS for cash transactions I will be pleased to do so, and give me a few spare ones so I can fill them out in advance. If not, mind your own damn business."
You are no more likely to be audited than any other business IF you report your income to the IRS and pay your taxes ON TIME, meaning estimated payments. The IRS is looking for inconsistencies, not regular transactions. Report the income, there is nothing to audit, especially if you have income greater or equal to cash deposits.
If I got a comment like that I would report them to the manager--that is not normal civil behavior and instills fear in customersthat the teller is in financial jeopardy(and not trustworthy) or does not know his/her ass from a hole in the ground on how to comport themselves before the public. IT also raises the chances that another unsavory person could overhear and rob you, As long as you are in compliance with the law, you can insult the crap out of rude people, and they cannot do DICK.
Bank tellers are supposed to be human ATM machines, and NEVER discuss the finances of the client, even if the computer screen says you have $50K in your account. Tellers job is to talk about the weather, smile, make sure the paperwork is right, sell other bank services, and say hello Mr/s. XYZ, and otherwise act like you are a paying customer, which you are. I know , I was one a long time ago.

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
The tellers are jealous, cuz well, they work in a bank all day. That would suck.

yes, and they are grossly underpaid too. I was shocked when my friend that was a teller told me she only made $6/hr. This was a few years ago but still damn! And then they got on her and told her to buy some nicer clothing. How are you supposed to buy ANY clothing making $6/hr?

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
haha my partner is a bank teller here in aussie, and if a customer ever reported him saying anything remotely like that about their finances or account, i think his ass would be fired almost instantly!

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Wow!! I do think that was out of line for that teller to ask you where & how you got your money. I'm a teller during the day myself & there is only one time I am to ask a person their profession and that is when they make deposits of 10,000 or more in order to fill out the govenrment form. I work in New York and no one should question anyone for amounts below 10,000. So I agree tell her about herself!! Me I'm pleasent & I don't judge people but people love to curse me out for stupid things like photo id to cash a check or withdraw money from their accounts.::) But it's all good!!

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
usaa.com
it's the bank I use as a regular bank.. you couldn't ask for better customer service
just get your cash, get a money order from the post office, and mail it to your bank account, will be there in 2-3 days
or better yet, if you don't like the idea of having that much cash, just stop by the post office before you go to the bank and give yourself a money order, that will shut the bitches up
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
you get more attitude buying money orders from the post office!
the bank tellers are used to people depositing cash, but the post office people will say stuff like "you're worse than the Mexicans!" (happened to me recently) and everyone is looking at you like you're up to something no good.
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
I buy money orders on a daily basis, well amost, as much as $5000 and they are usually thankful that someone actually has money to put in their register... then again, my stepmom works for the post office
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
why would they want money in the register? I mean, besides small bills.
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Damn, that teller was being a major bitch. Take comfort knowing that she makes about 60 bucks a day while you make several hundred. :)
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Bank tellers must be married or in a committed relationship because after reading this,I don't see how they survive on their own. Most of them are middle-aged or older,so that leaves me to believe this.
-
Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Other take - and I know this is true. Sometimes (and it doesn't sound like it in Molly's case, but sometimes) they are being pleasant and communicative, and then just feel really awkward. Like if you ask someone why they are stopping at the drug store, and then they tell you that they have cancer. Nothing much to say after that.
Easy solutions: stop by the bank machine on your way home and deposit small amounts every night or every second night. Really it is safer in the bank than in your purse or apartment.
rotate banks.
If she asks something like "where did you get the money" chances are good she is just surprised (because bank tellers don't generally handle large amounts of cash for personal account anymore. Internet, baby) and has realized in 1 second how inappropriate she is being. Give her a chance to rescind with a "I'm sorry?" or "excuse me?" or "what?"
Full out ignore her, but in a way that was like "oh, I'm so focussed on filling out this deposit slip and listening to my ipod that I didn't even hear you."
say "Birthday." She'll say something about generous relatives and you'll agree
Hockey pool (is that legal?)
Use judgment - is she is full out cross examining you, or being deliberate bitch, or trying to create a chill atmosphere, report her to the manager - she obviously needs some direction. If she just misspoke, I would keep in mind the effect that such a report can have on her life in relation to the effect that she is having on yours.

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
I will post this again. Tellers are trained to be nosey. One they are looking for selling opportunities. They are trained to ask questions to find products that suit your needs. Second they are looking for suspicious behavior. Tact is not something tellers are trained.
If someone is extremely rude about their questions tell the manager.
btw I have been a teller and single. I survived on my own nicely. A teller that does her job well does better than you would think.

Re: getting grilled by a bank teller
Thanks for the perspectives from everyone. I just felt like a criminal a little, but I realize it isn't exactly common for a jeans n' pumas pony tailed, seventeen year old looking girl to bop in and casually make such a huge cash deposit. I'm kinda too naive about things sometimes. I used to deposit my cash in an ATM after every shift, and maybe that's a better idea. Less to build up and leave around my apartment or on my person.
