Re: The songs are too short!
Wow, that is relatively fast. BUT if the customers who frequent your club expect it, then there isn't a problem. My clubs songs are 2.5 minutes. You get the occasional complaint, but all I do is smile and tell them "oh you were so busy fantasizing time just flew by huh" Then they blush and say "yes I guess you're right" that's when I ask for another dance. It usually works in my favor.
Re: The songs are too short!
That's a good line. Thanks, Cinnamon!
Re: The songs are too short!
If he is the only DJ there that does that, I'd definately say something. Nicely of course. But I would feel like I was ripping someone off. It probably leaves the customer with a pretty bad feeling, which won't help you in the long run. CK's line is cute, but I imagine won't work 100% of the time. The best DJs are the ones who are very good at keeping all songs a consistent length. At my club it was 3 minutes, I think.
Re: The songs are too short!
What would you say?
Three minutes sounds right to me. I've got no problem with cutting it after three minutes. But a minute and a half? I don't blame the customers one bit for being pissed off at that. I would be, too.
I don't know if he's the only DJ that does that; I've only been there twice, and he was working both times. I haven't worked with any other DJ's there. He seems like a really nice guy who genuinely wants to help us out. I just don't know what to tell him, and this doesn't seem to be bothering any of the other dancers - or maybe they're just used to it. I never see anyone selling repeats though, so it isn't just my hustle being affected.
Re: The songs are too short!
Yea talk to him...let him know that eventhough it is nice that "he's lookin out for the girls" he's actually doing more damage than good. Then explain to him why cuttin a song off in a 1.5min is a bad thing.
Re: The songs are too short!
Yeah... I just hate to come in as the new girl and start telling the veteran DJ how to do his job, you know?
Re: The songs are too short!
Yes, but if he likes you hopefully he won't see it as a problem. You could start the conversation like, "Hey I got a question for you. Why do you keep the songs at the length you do?" and then listen to his response..
That way you aren't actually tellin him how to do his job, but putting a buzz in his ear to think about later..

Re: The songs are too short!
Here's another thought. Are you mandated to only do one dance per one song? If the songs are really short and you kept dancing say, 30 seconds or so into the next song, you should whisper in your customer's ear, "The little extra time is on me so don't worry about it." So now you're really only dancing for 2 minutes or so but your customer is receiving a huge value in his mind and it will probably lend to selling more dances even easier when he thinks he's getting extra time for free.
Re: The songs are too short!
DW, that would be doing my own 2-for-1 special and they don't let us do that. They take a a $13 cut off every $40 dance; if they marked me down for two dances for doing that, they would charge me $26 for a dance I was only paid $40 for.
Re: The songs are too short!
That's just bad business, IMHO. The couch guy at our club times the dances, and they're 4 minutes long. Therefore, if I want to play a Ramones song, no one in the back is getting a shitty 1.5 minute dance. Also, the girls don't have to wait until a song is over to start dancing, etc. It's a much better system as far as i am concerned. And we get a LOT of repeat dances.
Re: The songs are too short!
I have the opposite problem. At the club I am at they run the songs too long.

If that's the case then talk to your DJ. Preface it first though. Just say, "I really appreciate you looking out for us in the club and sometimes the songs are a bit short and the customers are complaining they aren't getting their money's worth. Is there a way you can maybe play them a bit longer?" Being nice about it and maybe even sliding him a few bucks as well will certainly make everyone win.
Re: The songs are too short!
that's good advice ^ I totally understand about being the new girl in a club and not wanting to be demanding. But if you wait until the right moment, like when both of you are in a good mood and it isn't busy, and you could either just ask him if he thinks the song was kinda short, to get the conversation going - or maybe make up something about how you had a custy earlier that complained about the short song and you felt he had a point...

yeah I know how you feel I did a dance the other night to a song that lasted 10 minutes! >:( I think after about 6 or 7 minutes I was like, wtf?!?! And half assed the rest of it..
Re: The songs are too short!
Well, it's a moot point now. I was apparently fired for no damn reason this evening, so they can clip those songs all they want. I won't be there for it.
Re: The songs are too short!
I hate that whole per song business, the time factor is deceptive and the customers know it.
When I did stage shows I used to cram more songs into my music to make my sets seem longer.
When I did per song shows I ended up selling customers standard dances and extended (insert whatever term best sells the show in that venue) dances, instead of 1 song dances and 3 song dances, they were the same thing I just told them the extended dance was three times as long as the standard one.
You could pretty much count on if I said time was strictly 1 song I'd get some smart ass ask if he could pick the music and then request a 7 minute marathon. I told customers a standard show is as long as it takes for me to go through my standard show, roughly the length of your average song (3 minutes) they knew it was the same as a one song show but that the length of the actual song then became irrelavant, it seemed to put their mind at ease and they didn't listen to the music so much.
Re: The songs are too short!
On a related note, what do you say when a customer asks if that's the price for one song and how long are the songs? We have 2 minute songs, but I lie and say 2.5-3 minutes. I'm sure that's not the best way to handle things.

Say each song is $20 or whatever price your club runs. Leave it at that. If he's persistant in asking the length of time, tell him, "well I've never really sat and timed it, but I'd guess it's around 3min or so"
Re: The songs are too short!
What I hate at my club is a song in really long the dj will count it for two. and tell you after the song. then gyus get mad like i'm ripping them off.
