Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
I'm doing a burlesque show as "serial killer diva" next weekend. I'm working on a playlist and I was hoping someone could give me suggestions!
For one set, I'll bluster around with a gun prop and possibly other weapon props, and dance to Poe's "Angry Johnny" and Nick Cave's "Curse of Millhaven".
For another I'll do "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads and "I Eat Cannibal" by Toto Coelo (really obscure eighties music, look it up and it'll be stuck in your head for hours!) while crawling around in body paint and making scary faces at people . . .
I'm considering "Janie's Got a Gun" but I'm not sure this will be the right crowd. I need two more songs and a different theme for my third set (first one: shoot to kill, second: crazy psycho . . .)
Any suggestions? Any more songs about serial killers, killing, and cannibals? Maybe I should get Silence of the Lambs: The Musical and work from there . . . LOL.

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
"Mack The Knife" by Bobby Darin.
Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it … ah … out of sight.
Ya know when that shark bites, with his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, though, wears old MacHeath, babe
So there’s nevah, nevah a trace of red.
Now on the sidewalk … uuh, huh … whoo … sunny mornin’ … uuh, huh
Lies a body just oozin' life … eeek!
And someone’s sneakin' ‘round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?
A-there's a tugboat … huh, huh, huh … down by the river don’tcha know
Where a cement bag’s just a'droopin' on down
Oh, that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten old Macky’s back in town.
Now, d'ja hear ‘bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?
Now … Jenny Diver … ho, ho … yeah … Sukey Tawdry
Ooh … Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky’s back in town.
Aah … I said Jenny Diver … whoa … Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Yes, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky’s back in town …
Look out … old Macky is back!!
Here's a link to more songs.

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
I know the song isn't about serial killing per se but what about Helter Skelter? That's the song title (originally done by The Beatles and later done by Motley Crue) that Charles Manson's family painted on the wall in blood after they murdered Sharon Tate. It was the name of the book and the movie about Manson as well.
I feel kinda creepy even typing this, lol.

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Ooh, yes!
I'm not sure if I could pull off "Mack the Knife" (we have the Louis Armstrong version at my club) because it's about a specific, male killer. But Helter Skelter could work REALLY well . . . I'm thinking the Siouxsie and the Banshees version, it's one of the loveliest, most creepy things I've ever heard.
Thanks, DylanAngel!
Still taking suggestions, all.

I'm obsessed the Chicago (the musical). Some great music! (and my stage name Roxie of course!)

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Skinny Puppy's "Warlock" actually samples Chuck Manson Saying "tell me tell me tell me the answer, you may be a lover but you aint no dancer", but i dunno about the song otherwise. As for "Mack The Knife", there's a Nick Cave version of that, too. I have it on a cd called "September Songs:The Music Of Kurt Weill". It might be on his new B-sides and rarities compilation too, but i'd have to go upstairs to look and I am lazy. Lemme think.....hmmmm. There's a fun song by Wednesday 13 (Murderdolls, frankenstein drag queens, etc) on his new cd called "Bad Things" and it's about how much he wants to kill someone. Not really "psycho killer" per se, but along those lines. I'm tired, I'll think more on this and get back to you. There's tons of songs, but I'm not sure what would be appropriate to actually attempt to dance to.

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Die Warzau has a CD called Big Electric Metal Bass Face, which was released by Atlantic in the early 90's, I believe.
At the end of track 9 "Pretty Little Girlfriend", there is a recording of Charles Manson explaining his legal predicament in terms of a card game--he's got "nine murder cards", etc. It would be funny if the guy hadn't been such a psycho...
Then it mixes right into #10, "Red All Over", which would be the song you want to dance to--it's a great mix of industrial and funk. You'd probably have to get the Cd to make it work correctly, though, unless you could download both songs, making sure the end was on #9, and also that it mixed into #10.
But the Cd is quite good if you like their sound, track 6 "Burning" being probably the best on the CD. Tracks 2 and 3 are better in the remixes which I have separately ("Never Again" and "Funkapolis").
There is a double CD put out by Jack the Tab about the same time, I think it's called TeknoAcidbeat. On the first Cd track #7 "Jump Thee Gun" has the Beatles singing "...happiness is a warm gun..." with the guy who killed John Lennon saying several times "People say I'm crazy...", and the singer/vocalist says several times "I feel my finger on your trigger". It has a pretty good beat but definitely has a hallucinogenic quality. At the end, the last minute, the guy briefly explains why he killed John Lennon.
Track #8 is called "Terminate", and is probably better, if a bit on the heavy side--but what a beat! There's sounds of machine guns, a guy saying "This is a fucking war!", another guy saying "Terminated, with extreme prejudice...", a redneck saying "This here's my rifle, wait 'til I get an atomic bomb...". The beat is irresistable, if it does have again a somewhat hallucigenic sound.
For more conventionally acceptable songs, you could try "Shoot to Thrill" or "Night Prowler" by AC/DC. the first one is classic fast driving rock, the second moodier and slower but still pretty good.

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
^^^OMG, Red Right Hand! One of my all time favorites!
-
Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Yeah, "red right hand" is a good one too. There was a remake of it in Hellboy, but I never checked the ST to see who it was. How about "Ted, Just Admit It..." by Jane's Addiction? or there's a fun industrial-ish song by Numb from their "Christmeister" cd called "Eugene". Sample lyrics: "Don't mess with eugene nesmith, do not fuck with him at all. He might get you in your sleep, he might pin you to the wall. Strung out on PTD's, his daddy was in the war. He's got a gun in his briefcase, daddy showed him what it's for".Hmmm. Wiseblood had a good tune called "0-0 (Where Evil Dwells)" that was redone nicely by Fear Factory. It's murder/serial killer themed as well. Front 242 have a tune called "Serial Killers Don't Kill Their Girlfriends", but I can't recall if it has lyrics or not. I'll think of more, possibly much more playable ones later.

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Very cool. I love that this thread has taken on a creative existence of its own.
I picked:
Angry Johnny (Poe)
The Curse of Millhaven (Nick Cave)
Psycho Killer (Talking Heads)
I Eat Cannibal (Toto Coelo)
Helter Skelter (Siouxsie)
and Vultures (Oingo Boingo)
That one's not a suggestion from here -- I just found it in my collection at the last minute and decided it would be strangely perfect for finishing up the act.
Say boys and girls don't you want to have fun?
Why bother to walk when you'd rather run?
Why bother with books when you've got a gun?
Come fly with me right into the sun
In another world, in another time
I can picture you and me together
If I close my eyes tight and think real hard
I can float lighter than a feather
If I try even harder who knows what I might find
Why maybe a pearl of wisdom
I would trade these pearls for a parcel of flesh
In flesh we were all invented
Is it time to play? said the ratboy to the ratgirl
Can we fly today, can we look here for some fresh kill?
In concentric circles we'll carve up the sky
Looking for a big surprise
Fly like a vulture, fly like a vulture, fly like a vulture....
In another world, in another time
I can picture us a happy family
With our happy kids all flying all around
And leaving far behind the rat-race
Is it time to play? said the tortoise to the rabbit
Can we fly today, are we creatures all of habit
In concentric circles we'll carve up the sky
Waiting for a big surprise
Fly like a vulture, fly like a vulture...

Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
So how'd it go over?
I admire your bravery and imagination for coming up with such a controversial, perversely but undeniably attractive theme, and I hope it was a great success...
-
Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Not much bravery involved. The burlesque night is "Creepy Cabaret" and the club gets a lot of goth-punk clientele. :-) It was well received -- lots of clapping and cheering -- unfortunately a lot of the new visitors did not know how to tip. :P I mostly made up the deficit by staying after the show, when the club's regular customers came back.
-
Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Glad to hear it went over well...
You know, there's two kinds of rewards in this business--monetary and personal/artistic. To me the latter is much more important, though I have been doing this long enough to feel insulted if I am grossly underpaid, lol.
So I am glad to hear the one reward was granted you, even if the tipping or monetary reward had to be put off until the regular crowd came in later.
-
Re: Songs About Serial Killers & Psychos
Yes! My thoughts as well. I am planning to enter the show next time it runs, as well, and the planners have told me they'll try a different setup which has proven to work better for getting the tippers to show. :-)
