using your stage name all the time?
Hi Again,
I am very close to getting to audition...due to other work I can't start till May. I am going to be going to the club in the next couple weeks to scope it out, watch and learn type stuff. My question is, if I get into conversations with cusotmers/dancers/managers about my interest in working there, should I introduce myself as the stage name I am going to take, or my real name? What do most of the girls refer to each other in the dressing room, their real or stage name? How about when I actually talk to a manager for the frist time do I use my stage name or would he think I am a total newbie doing that. I personally would rather use my real name as little as possible, but I don't want to look stupid calling myself Leia and other people thinking "who does she think she is" type of thing.
Thanks!
Leia
Re: using your stage name all the time?
Introduce yourself to the manger by your real name. At some point I'm sure he'll ask what your stage name will be.Liea is a beleivable enough real name so you could use that when you meet dancers & custies before you start working. I always refer to other entertainers by their stage name, I don't even know some girls real names. If I start calling them by their real name I'll probably slip up and call them that on the floor, which I've doen before. Luckily my friend just ignored me when I did that!
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I think you should introduce yourself to the managers by your stage name, and yeah definitely use your stage name if you talk to customers or dancers.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
When first meeting the managers I say my real name and my stage name. After the inital meeting I ONLY use my stage name. It really sucks when someone starts shouting out your real name when they are trying to get your attention, so all the other dancers will only know my stage name unless they know me personally and even then sometimes we'll still refer to each other by our stage names. It's kinda like an alter ego.... you just become it...
Re: using your stage name all the time?
True....I have almost become my fake name. I have a email set up for it and everything. Sometimes it's hard to remember to use my real name in the real world. I'd say, just use your fake name from the beginning. Initially I had found it hard to remember to use my fake name, telling custies my real one instead, just because it had became such a reflex.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I ALWAYS introduce myself to the manager with my real and stage names. It looks more professional,in my opinion. It shows you can be serious and not all about what your stage name is.

That's how I do business too. It's not the other girls business what my real name is. Hell, alot of the dancers even think I live in one part of town when I really live in another. I go to work to make $$$, not friends. I could care less if they got offended that I wouldnt' tell them my real name.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I've only read the OP ... Luckily enough for me my stage name is my real name so no problem there. If there is another dancer with my real name working under than name at the club, I then use my back-up name. I prefer it if dancers and club staff refer to me under my stage name whilst at work.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I only use my stage name at work, however when I book myself at clubs, I will introduce myself to the hiring manager as both names. At work, all the dancers call each other by our stage names. We all are friends and hang out and know each others real names, but at work we only use stage names.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
Introduce yourself to the manager by both. After you're hired, they will usually only use your stage name. I personally wouldn't share my name with anyone else. You just don't know when they'll slip up and let it out. Plus, being called by my stage name helps keep me focussed on why I'm there.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I personally introduced myself with my stage name. But my personal reason is that I can't stand my real name and if any of the people working there found out I would be so embarassed.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
i always use my stage name. when i first came in for an audition i introduced myself to the manager with my real name followed by "i'll be going by Carmen" from then on every dancer, bouncer watever person i meet its always carmen. i think its better to go by stage name.. keeps work seperate from "real life" plus its safer too. :-)
Re: using your stage name all the time?
Always introduce yourself to the owner/ manager with your real name then your stage name.
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I tried to introduce myself as my real name once and was told, "No honey, don't tell me your real name, none of us really want to know that."
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I supose every club/ owner/manager is different!
But when the girls/Ladies come to our club I prefer them to introduce theirselfs by their real name then I will ask what their stage name is.
I like to know their real name just in anything happened as you never know!
Re: using your stage name all the time?
When I first started dancing in Melbourne it amazed me that you never really knew any of the girls by their real name unless you had a friendship with them outside of work. Even then sometimes both birth name and stage name would used depending on the situation.
When I'm working I actually become Natalie, she's like my naughty little sister!! Once, in Australia one of the d-j's who knew my real name announced it by accident just before a stage set and it was like all my worlds collided!! Maybe that sounds wierd but I have a real thing about only using my stage name at work.
When I began dancing in the uk I noticed that quite often dancers use their real name and dont bother with a stage name. I made the mistake of introducing myself to my dance manager by my real name and now she uses it all the time. It pisses me off as the other girls then pick up on it and slip up when we're out on the floor. I feel a bit silly when I've just told a customer I'm called Natalie and then moments later someone will use my real name. I probably sounds strange to some people but my dance character is my dance character, my alter ego. My real persona is my private life, like my heart and mind. I like to keep the 2 seperate..... ;)
Re: using your stage name all the time?
I had a bad expiereance with a customer finding out my real name so now i only use my stage name.
