yeah i read that before bed too. freaked me out, hope all you girls(and guys) are safe!!
i second that...everyone stay safe. from the news reports it seems that it was as bad as the U.S.'s Katrina in terms of strength!
OH my dear god! It is no where NEAR Sydney!!!!!!! >:(
The tropical storms and cyclones (we do NOT have tornadoes in Australia) always hit the "Top End" (near and/or around Darwin) plus the "The Tropics" (from Townsville in QLD along the East Coast and above!!).
Gold Coast had some wild weather only a few weeks ago. It just rained, rained and rained. The good news is that our local dam is now over-flowing (yay) since it was waaaaay down prior to the 'wild weather' (the whole place was on water restrictions). Unfortunately, Brisbane didn't feel it in their dams as much even tho' the city did.
...and no... the people in Townsville are not okay. There has been heaps of damage. Goes with the territory tho' as the 'wet season' (when the tropical cyclones and 'wild weather' usually happens) is not quite over yet... it ends at the end of April. "The Dry" starts at the start of May.

Cyclone Larry is only a category 2. The most devasting cyclone in Australia's history was Cyclone Tracy (Xmas 1975) which was a category 5 .... that one was similiar to Katrina as it wiped out Darwin.
You guys make me laugh
we were just worried that's all. :(
Oops! I didn't mean to sound bitchy. Believe me the concern was noted. I just thought it was a good time to clear up quite a few of the misconceptions that were posted in the thread :) Hoping someone gained some knowledge or insight into Australia that they previously didn't know .....
Actually you do, albeit they are a rarity.Quote:

I also should point out that tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons) commonly spawn small tornadoes.
The key difference of course is that these storms tend to move in a southwesterly direction and would most likely hit a coastline facing north or east as this one did (as opposed to a hurricane hitting a coastline facing south or east as they do in the US). They also rotate clockwise, whereas hurricanes up here rotate counter-clockwise.
AOL started out reporting Sydney was hit. The overnight news wasn't more helpful. This afternoon they're still reporting Cyclone Larry as having been a Cat 5, slowing down just before landfall. The mayor of Cairns said it looks like a bomb hit. I'm not shooting for drama I was shooting for empathy. That was a scary headline given the tsunami and Katrina! Glad you guys are fine!;D
Lol - I was about to go check the news then!
Yes it was nowhere near Sydney - it wasn't even near Brisbane which at least is in the same state. Anyway thanks for checking on us!!! (-:
Wait. You mean Iran didn't get hit by a cyclone?
Oops - different thread. :P
i think it must have been a category 5 while it was still out at sea. but yeah, as GoldCoastGirl said, it was a category 2 once it hit land. :)Quote:

Consumers can expect huge price increases in bananas and other tropical fruit after crops were devastated by Cyclone Larry.
Here a link to Innisfail information (it's closer to Cairns than Townsville).
I'm in Brisbane and I'm fine, thank you for asking! The cyclone didn't even hit Brisneyland, but now we're getting some good rain because of it...which we need because our dams are only 33.5% full (at 30% the water starts poisoning itself).
