Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
Just wondering if any of you saw the Dr. Phil show that had a special part on exotic dancing? I didn't see it but my friend told me about it. Apparently, the show was on people who are addicted to money and who will do anything they can to get it. And it had this girl on there who is an exotic dancer who said she enjoyed her job. Apparently Dr. Phil was telling her it was degrading and giving her all these statistics on women who dance and who do web cam stuff. Since I didn't see it I don't know what was said but was wondering if any of you did and what your thoughts were on it. Interested in hearing ya!

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
I saw it. He was full of bullshit. Saying that strippers are degrading themselves, and citing statistics that show about 78% were stalked, 42% were follwed home (or vice versa) and only 25% of them had marriages that lasted 3 years.
He is a psychologist and should have told the woman what Dancer Wealth teaches. How to work a regular schedule, how to save and invest money, and how to be finacially secure from the business instead of telling her to get a real job. Of course this is TV and the networks don't want to make stripping seem acceptable.
On Monday he had another sexually biased show where a wife did webcam shows, and it showed the husband couldn't handle it, and how the wife had an affair with one of her customers and that he sent her large amouts of money. He called her a prostitute. This woman had a gambling habit which caused her to get into the business, but Dr. Phil did not focus on her gambling habit, but on the unacceptable job she had.
Plus, both women on the show were flaky. They never would consider putting on the Emily or Melanie type women who are stable, and have accomplished something through this industry.
What a shame that we live in such a biased and prejudiced world.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
I just love it when people insist that I must hate my job. Nevermind how I actually feel about it. I'm so glad I did not see this show, as I can just imagine how it went.
Stripper: You know Dr. Phil, there are so many misconceptions about exotic dancing and I'd really like to share my experience. I've found that, like any job, it can be challenging and rewarding. I've been able to get ahead financially and really feel empowered.....
Dr. Phil: Actually Stripper, you are really degrading yourself and can't possibly be happy. (cheers from audience) You must have some unresolved issues. What you're doing is not healthy.....
Etc. etc. until the commercial break.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
Jessica_Rabbit, the stripper they had on there wasn't as intelligent as the roleplay you did. She had even been a firebreather in the past to make money.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
Fallacy of Irrelevent/questionable Authority!
Who the fuck cares what Dr.Phil thinks or says. He doesn't know what hes talking about half the time. And never trust randonm statistics that people throw out! I'm just pissed of that this continues to perpetuate awful stereotypes of strippers and women in general. What's so wrong with web cam work? Nothing. His whole argument stinks of "Red Herring" (throwing one off the point). Sorry, such a rant.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
^ yup. my family watches him. They don't know what I do, and it always makes my heart crumble a little bit when one more stripper fitting the bad stereotype pops up. I wouldn't mind telling them, cept for the parents and grandparents would probably have a heart attack.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
Yeah, I love that show but I had the same reaction. Every time I've seen his shows with strippers I've been struck by the change in his demeanor and psych doc protocols. You can't effect change in the subject if you don't first get them to agree there's something fundamentally wrong in their behavior. Instead he just tells them something's wrong and they must stop. He gets very Judge Mathis and predicts their imminent demise. I find his reaction bizarre. If he won't treat the subject seriously why further the everpresent exploitation he suspects we all suffer?

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
Yeah i've seen it as well. Just your typical stereotype. ::)
-
Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
if you really feel that we were wrongly represented, maybe some of the "investment" dancers should write the show and explain their side and offer to go on. the best way to approach something you feel is perpetuating a stereotype is to stand up to it (not angrily) and show what you know to be the truth. i've seen him have guests on before that have challanged what he's said in the past.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
My mother loves watching him. I tried to tell her I dance in the past because I really wanted to be honest with her. She kept getting worked up that I was going to get physically hurt, despite my continual explanation that there is no way any customer is going to get away with hurting me in a bar with bouncers breathing down there necks. Finally I had to just placate her and tell her I stopped. Thank you Dr. Phil.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
They're telling these women that they're exploited at the club...you think Dr. Phil didn't "exploit" the the fact that there would be attractive, "bad" women on the show to draw in viewers? Fucking hypocrites.
I like Penny's idea. Smart strippers on teevee!

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
i am not much for dr. phil at all.... i think he should have checked his statistics a little better... he probably made them up for good tv....
-
Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
first, thank you Tina for the compliment.
And I don't think they want to put smart, money-savvy strippers on TV. If you have strippers on there that break the stereotype, there is nothing to talk about.
If you were Dr. Phil, you'd want to placate your target audience (housewives). This means portraying strippers in a negative light. Yeah, sure she's attractive, but she's dumb...and abused/exploited. She doesn't have good relationships with her family blahblahblah.
The housewife can turn off the TV believing she is doing the right thing. I don't believe Dr. Phil is trying to help anyone. He just wants to show people what everyone else is doing wrong so you can feel what you are doing is right.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
totally agree emily.. did he even bother to admit that a good majority of dancers are college educated or currently in school????

is that true? I didn't think it was....
but how can there be stats? I don't think anyone is doing surveys on us.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
Did anyone see the Pathetic Dancer survey making the rounds at work. Neither did I. If he got his stats from other psychologists then of course it's going to be filled up with troubled people.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
You're all right, Dr. Phil's not going to put a dancer on there who has their act together like most of thest girls on SW, he's going to put someone on there that will make other people feel better about themselves. As mentioned in another post, Dr. Phil's target audience is housewives, certainly not exotic dancers (they're still sleeping from working all night ;) )Anyway, this is what gets "ratings", I don't thing there would be much ratings on a dancer that was putting herself through school, investing her money, etc. Remember "bad", "outrageous", etc. is what sells on TV, look at Jerry Springer with everyone beating each other up on there. People like to see things like that to make themselves feel more normal.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
Did you see the quote the young lady put on there:
"1 in 4 women are molested in the U.S. according to Dr. Phil! The porn industry is a DIRECT cause. "
Wow. Talk about a spurious argument! :bomb: It really chaps my ass...

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
well let's put it this way. Dr. Phill has now on his third marriage yet he gives marriage advice. Not only that but he's not even a certified "DR" (is he even a certified therapist??) Which to me, proves me doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Would never happen. The Dr. Phil show is there not to help the people who are mentally ill, it is there to gain ratings. Strippers will bring ratings as long as they are depraved, abused, drug addicted sterotypes only.
People watch Dr. Phil to fell better about themselves and their crappy lives. They can tune in and say to themselves "Wow, at least I'm not THAT bad."
Dr. Phil would lose his base audience if strippers who are smart, well ajusted, beautiful, earn a high income, in a happy relationship and LOVE their jobs came on his show. The audience doesn't want it rubbed in their faces that they really are pathetic because they are overweight and depressed housewives that haven't worn make up or done thier hair for months.

I don't think this is true either. I have met a few dancers who are educated and/or in school, but the vast majority are not.
Stripperweb is the upper 20% of all dancers. The numbers of college educated dancers here is a lot higher.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
I've never seen his show.
But, I think it's safe to say that' he's just another entertainer playing the role that entertains his target audience.

Re: Anyone see the Dr. Phil show on exotic dancers?
I saw that episode...I was wondering what everyone's reaction would be.
I was kind of annoyed at the stats- where did they come from?? The marriage one especially, how less than 25% of dancers stay married for more than 3 years. Wha? That seems like a weird one to me. A skewed-wording one, like they're including single dancers in the 75%. Like 25% have been married more than 3 years...then there's the rest. Which would be a reasonable stat, since overall we're young and unmarried.
But anyways, ya, it was stupid. I don't know why he was getting on her for firebreathing?? Granted, it didn't sound like she knew what she was doing, but if you're trained and licensed, I think that would be an awesome job!

Thank god someone pointed that out... the failed marriage thing,
The guy is an exploitive douchebag. Seriously.
