Umm Cardio and weighttraining are key!
cardio is key, weight training & most gyms have classes, along with nutrition.
And plenty of squats. They work wonders.
Your body will tone too once you start dancing with those heels. But when you're not dancing, run, eliptical(sp?),other cardio workouts, and light weights. Drink lots of water and DIET. You know, the works. :P Good luck. :)
I'm a former personal trainer and fitness competitor, as well as a certified Pilates instructor, and I'll tell you now that a lot of girls I see avoid weights. Doing weights will NOT make you bigger, they make you leaner and more defined. I can't tell you how good it makes me feel when women half my age tell me they admire my body which I work hard for.
Since I'm new to dancing here, I actually took this exotic dancing workout class, and I felt more sore after doing those floor moves than I ever did doing Pilates.
A problem I have seen with some girls here at the place I work at...many smoke, drink, and don't eat right, thinking they will have their bodies forever. LADIES: you can't live like that and hope to be healthy. Pizza and doughnuts are the daily food for a lot of the girls.
Workouts that are good for beginners include some basic cardio maybe 20 minutes a day, such as walking or jogging, using the eliptical trainer, and some light weight lifting. Later on when you get more adjusted to an exercise routine you can add more weights and take some classes that will lengthen and strengthen your muscles such as Pilates.
Wearing those heels are hard on my feet and even I find it a challenge to be on them several hours a day and then contort myself up there on stage or on a gentleman's lap ;)
You heard this from the fitness expert ;)
Hand in hand with exercise you must also eat right...diet counts for more than exercise. Eat lean protein, plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, treat yourself to the occasional fast food or dessert, and drink a lot of water NOT soda!! Limit alcohol and don't do drugs!!

My biggest thing is...and please, don't take offense if you do this...is smoking and excessive drinking. I DO see a lot of girls who smoke a LOT...I'm not one to tell them to stop but...if you do stop, more power to ya. And some girls at the place I'm at actually are on the stage sometimes drunk...that can be dangerous in heels or the risk of falling on/off stage is a lot higher when you've had more than a few Cosmos ;)
It's hard when you live in a town where food and drink are huge components of the gambling industry!!!!
Everything in moderation is really the key.
( sneaks out to Krispy Kreme to get a couple yummy donuts....)
I agree with Mary BlueBoot, all the dipping low and booty shaking is very hard on the low back and knees...from a prevention of injury stand point, do exercises that will strengthen these areas: squats, lunges, core work is a must!, there are tons of exercises! I think this is more important than cardio for our line of work b/c if you get an injury your out which=no money. You'll become toned once you start dancing. If you do have time cardio on top of this is great! and will prepare you for the long hours...ok sorry this post is getting boring i can go on for hours! it's the human physiology/exercise science major coming out of me.
I'm there with you on that too about going low. My lower back hurts...I arch my back often and when you move 'slowly' on stage in certain positions, and in lap dancing, it can really take a toll. I feel the burn, baby. LOL
But yes core training is a must. See my post in an earlier thread, a response to LA Exotique's request for an online partner for exercise inspiration and training. You also have to eat well and healthy to fuel your body...it needs powerhouse fuel. My diet includes lean fish, turkey, chicken, egg whites, lots of anti oxidant foods like carrots, spinach, yams, tomatoes, strawberries....oatmeal, sugar-free items in moderation, brown rice, nuts, and skim dairy products.
You cannot just exist on junk food and then exercise or dance and hope to have the same body. It just isn't happening. I see trim girls at work who have a high percentage of body fat in relation to their actual weight...eating junk food all the time, every day. Again, I love to indulge, but that's not every day I'm gonna eat pizza and Krispy Kremes.
I do core moves at the gym as well in addition to weight training, which I do move of than cardio because I love the way it makes me feel, and I'm more of a sprinter than an endurance person having muscle fibers that make me suited for sports like gymnastics rather than running marathons.
