I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
Well I learned a valuable lesson tonight on how much the world has changed since I was a kid.
My sixteen year old nephew plays catcher for his high school baseball team and went out to Wal-Mart to buy a bottle of white out. Now what does a baseball catcher need white out for? Well, according to him he puts it on his fingers so his infielders can see his signs against the dark background of his uniform during night games.
Well he comes back from Wal-Mart and wouldn't you know, they wouldn't let him buy white out because he was a minor. Their rationale? Its because white out fluid can be abused as an inhalant.
So I go back out to Wal-Mart with him and buy a freaking bottle of white out for him. I understand their reasoning but the whole thing was embarrassing. For God sakes, they asked him if I was his dad.
And upon getting home, I did a little research and find out there's a whole multitude of such products that stores will not let minors purchase many of which are innoculously located in the cosmetic or office supply section.

These products have been around for eons. Hell, I remember using rubber cement as a kid and every girl in my class having three cans of Aqua Net in her locker. To the best of my knowledge, we never considered huffing these products.
Why has so much changed since then? I mean are kids these days becoming that damned bored and stupid? :loco:
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
Kids have always been bored and stupid. Inhaling rubber cement isn't new but now we have an over agressive media to exploit every dumb thing teenagers do .Unfortunately, in the process of "exposing the dangerous problem" they give otherwise "good" kids ideas and next thing you know we have lame policies about the sales of office supplies and aerosol cans. I think businesses want to protect themselves from liability in case God forbid little Tommy huffs himself to death.Personally, I think it's ridiculous. If a kid wants to get high those types of products are everywhere you go. It's not exactly heroin, ya know?
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
I had to buy my 16-year old brother CO2 cartridges for his pellet gun, because Wal-Mart won't sell them to minors. I asked if it was because it was part of a weapon or because you can huff them like whippets, and the clerk didn't know. Is model glue on that list?
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
^ It seems like it is...I know you can't buy paint either. My parents own their own business, and I had issues when they needed me to pick up a can of paint for painting equipment (I think I was 16 or so at the time).
It makes sense, but geez! :P
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
minors cant buy super glue, white out, spray paint, lighters, diet pills, and a few other things.
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
You have to be 18 to buy cans of compressed air that's used to clean the dust and dirt out of computers. Several kids have died huffing it, thinking that it's just air. It's not just air; it has a propellant that is heavier than air and smothers you. Kids have been found dead in their rooms, straws still in their mouths, eyes open, still clutching the cans.
Kids are dumb. In high school I once heard that a kid sold a jar of formaldehyde to stoners so they could dip their blunts in for a halluinogenic effect. Other kids would inhale the remains of aerosol cans. Some can't afford to or don't want to do illegal drugs, so they do chemicals, which can be just as idiotic.

Yup, that's called being "wet" :O I don't do drugs, I just know the names of them...
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
Lawyers strike again,
I'll bet if you dig deep enough you'd find some parent that sued Wal Mart when their kid OD'd on white out. Never mind how bad the the parents probably were with their responsiblity to the kid, its easier to pass the blame and sue a big company to get some money out of the deal.
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
How ridiculous. White out stinks! I recall smoking crushed Anacin rolled in binder paper when I was 14. I guess they should refuse to sell Anacin and binder paper to kids now too. (btw, all it did was give us a headache)

It's called dumb-shit syndrome, most of us suffered from it when we were younger (I have a few friends who still do) and kids today will continue to suffer from it. I cringe when I think about what I might have to face as my son gets older. I talk it up to him now and pray he's listening.
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
We had bamboo growing in our yard, and stupid kids would grab some leaves and try to get high by smoking them.
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
It is just one of many examples of this country becoming less and less free.
Heck, in NYC a court ruled that regular couple's dancing isn't a right in public places.
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
Yep. Unfortunately, Doc.. Kids (and some Adults too) will use anything they can to get high. I did a brief stint working at 7-11 many years ago. We had to card for any aerosol items or anything like white-out stuff. We had to watch a video about why and all that too.
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
Back when I was teaching, there was several instances with students being caught huffing different stuff. I remember one girl who had covered part of a sheet of paper with white out. When she wanted to take a sniff she'd pull out the paper and scratch at the white out with a fingernail to release the smell. Then there was the dumb ones who'd bring in the bottle and get it on their noses or wind up spilling it on themselves. High lighters were another favorite. The school banned high lighters for that reason. Some kids would sneak them in, other kids would high light an entire page of paper and then sniff at it.
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
Wow... people are crazy now.
I remember catching the kid next door to my parents smoking tea bags rolled in binder paper. Yes she tore open the tea bag and rolled it in binder paper. I asked her her reasoning for this she said it was to get her high :loco:
Re: I contributed to the delinquency of a minor
damn I thought me and my friend were the only people that ever smoked binder paper...hahaha!
