It wouldn't irritate the hell out of me as much if the people who were playing the style, and even gaining from writing generic punk-style lyrics that they do not stand for anymore than the man in the moon, were not the exact antithesis of the original punk bands. I just can't listen to alot of new punk music for that very reason. So if I were to dance to punk and stand for punk, it would have to be PUNK, not the knockoff anti-anarchy, wanna-be capitalist exploiters who have ruined it. There, I've had my say. :)
I completely agree with what you've said. The point of punk was NOT the music, but what they were saying. The music was actually considered non-music.
Today's punk seems to be less about the message and more about who can play those three chords with enough melody to get airplay.
In my day (yes, I'm old enough to remember the old school stuff), NONE of it got airplay...they were too busy listening to whatever Studio 54 dictated.
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
ET I think your over-romantising the original punk bands. Lydon has exploited his own legacy to make a buck. This is fine by me since he’s entitled to make a little money off his own art. The Ramones thought they were going to be as big as Kiss. Unfortunately, songs about head-banging, sniffing paint-thinner, and cretin hops won’t get you to number one on the hit parade. Most of the punk bands wanted to be famous (or notorious) and make at least some cash along the way. Sometimes we downplay the commercial ambitions of punk and overemphasize the political agendas of some of the punk bands. Still doesn’t detract from the music in any way.
I agree with you about most of the new punk-pop bands. But I don’t like them because most are just the sum of their record collections.

I know that Lydon has. But he has grown. And I do believe that he meant what he did, and that is the point I suppose. I know that Lydon was riding the wave instilled by the original underground movement so he is guilty too, but I do believe that he meant what he did. Just because you want money (which I wouldn't mind), doesn't mean that you are not creating true-to-yourself art. It's when these guys are sticking any tom, dick, or harry up there and saying "play these three chords, and sing these generic lyrics", when they don't believe them, and it is truly anti-anarchy and pro-exploitation, pro-hierarchy, that it really irritates me. They are taking the meaning of anarchy and replacing it with it's actual opposite... anarchy does not mean rape, drugs, and violence. That is actually anti-anarchy. I suppose it's because I am an anarchist in some ways, and maybe I am taking it personally, because I really wouldn't care if it were music I didn't like in the first place lol.
I suppose I believe if you create art that you need to believe in it... that's basically the bottom line. Of course in this society when is that ever going to happen lol.
I can't stand some rap music, mainly because I don't like the message. But I can appreciate it when they are being true-to-themselves, they are thugs and pimps and there is no bones about it. Now how would it be if some religious fanatic started making rap music, sending the message but not meaning it, or changed the meaning of it to suit them. Same game.
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
on rob zombies greatest hits cd theres a bunch of good songs to dance to. i actually played through the cd and danced for my boyfriend. theres a few songs that i skipped over, but rob zombie doing brick house was great. and pussy liquor is a great song. but theres little sound clips from house of 1000 corspes in it, but its related to the song and its not a whole long thing.
i cant dance to rap either. or r+b.
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
I'm using some pistols and misfits stuff for my first time dancing...hell, I'd love to dance to gg allin buuut that wouldn't go over very well. haha
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
^^^ Hahaha, it would probably be worth it to see the crowd reaction!
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
The only problem I would honestly have playing the Misfits, aside from the minute long songs, is the horrible horrible sound quality. I threw in "walk among us" at the club one day before we opened, since it was in my car. It sounded AWFUL. It just sounded like a lot of clanging and bass and "WHOOOOA-OAOAOAH deathkillmaim WHOA-OA-OH!"
Has anyone mentioned the album from one of the new Tony Hawk games....it's got remakes of "classic" punk songs redone by newer bands. My Chemical Romance did "Astro-Zombies", and I thought it was pretty good.

Or worse yet you could try dancing to Anal Cunt. :O
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
AC have quite possibly the best song titles EVER. But yeah, I dont think I'd bust them out at the SC.
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
Here's another really obscure punk tune: Demon Preacher, "Little Miss Perfect." It's about the infamous case of Joyce McKinney. She was a "nice" Mormon girl from Utah who kidnapped a man, then forced him to have sex. Might work well in a club if the mp3 sound quality isn't too dire.
Lots of other good stuff to download from these mp3 blogs.

Hmm... stripping to Green Day and Fall Out Boy (2 of my fave bands) if you've got any suggestions as to which songs by these 2 artists that would be cool :O
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
If you want to set a real interesting tone, try TSOL's "I wanna fuck the dead"
Otherwise if you still like old school, The Clash has an interesting mix ranging from their early purer days (Blackmarket Clash, Give 'em enough rope" to their cross over ska/punk hit, London Calling.
Re: Punkrock stripper needs music advice
Here's another good song, "I'm a Pretender" by the Exploding Hearts. It's off their Guitar Romantic CD. Sadly the band is no more as several members died in a tour van crash. Good stuff.

Skunk Anansie - 'Carmen Queasy' is ok for most clubs
Stranglers - Peaches
