Hey, what about industrial?
I've never really gotten into industrial music before, probably because I haven't been exposed to it much - being that I'm from a backward state and all. I guess the only place I hear it (radio is crap around here too) is in movie soundtracks. But all of a sudden it's like I've discovered it for the first time and I really like it.
My current fave is Surface Patterns on the Hideaway soundtrack. In some strange way, I even think it's also a sexy, danceable song. My LSi9s really like it too (damn, I love those things! ;D ).
So, considering that that song is one I like, any other industrial heads out there have more suggestions as to what I might like? Or, what's your favorite industrial type stuff?
SecondChance (The hitman came, and yes, he got cheated ;) )

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Pick up a copy of the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway. I didn't care for the movie but the soundtrack is excellent. And of course, in my opinion, Trent Reznor is the king, so pick up some Nine Inch Nails.

Great soundtrack! what a HORRIBLE movie tho....I've never been so lost in all my life

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
My boyfriend likes it... I think it's only for the most hardcore David Lynch fans, which I'm not.

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
You could always go for the originals:
Throbbing Gristle - "Hot on the Heels of Love"

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Two other good industrial groups are Front Line Assembly and Manufacture.
There was a whole lot of stuff coming out of Austria and Germany for a while there that was pretty good, too.
Damn, now I'm gonna have to go find some of that stuff, lol--most of it wouldn't go over too well where I work, so I have added my industrial CDs to the stacks and boxes of stuff I have sitting around neglected.

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Don't forget Revolting Cocks and good ol' Ministry!
-
Re: Hey, what about industrial?
I was recommended Chillout Sessions Vol 1 & 2 by Ministry of Sound. They any good? The person said those were excellent, but the ones after were not so hot.
Anyway, thanks for the recommendations so far. I'm definitely gonna check some of that out.
Oh yeah. Do not listen to Burnt Beyond Recognition by Methallo & The Fixer for the first time when you are alone in the dark. I swear there were monsters in my closet that night - LOL!!

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Those Ministry Of Sound cd's are more of the chilled out triphop trancey whatever mellow massive attack vibe if the memory is working correctly.
If that Mentallo & The Fixer album scared you, you really really need some Skinny Puppy. And Nurse With Wound. And find some tracks from early-mid 80's Coil, preferably something off "Unnatural History Volume One". As for Coil, let's put it this way...they made some theme music for the original Hellraiser flick, and Clive Barker didn't use it because it was scarier than his movie and it "made his bowels churn". RIP Jhon Balance.
It seems you're into the dancier stuff though, if the FLA "surface patterns" track is an indicator. So.
:Ahem:
-KMFDM, Pre-guitars Ministry, Thrill Kill Kult, Basically anything old WaxTrax label. (Try to find the "Wax Trax Black Box" used on ebay, that's a nice overview)
-there's TONS of newer stuff that takes elements of synthpop and industrial, but generally without the ARGH GRRRR synthed screamy vocal effects. For this stuff try Apoptygma Berserk, Covenant, Wolfsheim, Blutengel, VNV Nation, etc etc.
I'm partial to most of the older stuff, myself. Nitzer Ebb, RevCo, Front 242, Foetus, etc. I have a Wumpscut cd on right now. Your best bet would be to maybe check out something like www.isotank.com , where they have listings and brief descriptions of artists. "Industrial" is one of those genres that the term is different to everyone. To some, it's bad metal by people in spooky makeup. To others, it's Throbbing Gristle and SPK and Einsturzende Neubauten and other people who bang on metal things. There's a bajillion subgenres and no one ever agrees on what is what and it really doesnt matter. Find what makes your booty move and run with it. Hope this was helpful.

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Yeah the WaxTrax label was good.
Cool to see someone else who knows about Psychic TV, too...
Can't contribute much right now, burned out from a rough (but great) night at work, and the majority of my industrial is in storage right now.

You need to come DJ in Los Angeles...you have to be the coolest strip club DJ of all time. ;D
And yes, the word "industrial" (when pertaining to music) has been thrown around and distorted (and banged upon and thrown through an effects processor and a delay) and currently seems to house any sub-genre of "spooky weirdos with white makeup and black clothes"....when in fact, the term "industrial music" was coined by Monte Cazazza of Psychic TV, although Genesis P. Orridge takes credit for it. This is fine with me, because he is the only one stepping forth from the whole Throbbing Gristle crew and still doing anything substantial, other than getting electrolysis and gardening in a dominatrix outfit (oh wait, that is Genesis). tee hee
The original definition is what I consider "industrial music" to be: the danceable soundtrack to the machine age...or something of that nature.
It's a strange state of affairs when one can consider VNV Nation to be "industrial" when Ronan can't even sing more than 3 cords and EVERY note that comes forth from their uninspired fingertips sounds the same as the previous...but that's just my opinon. You have to have a sense of humor to enjoy it, and those music snob industrial purists will always see the untapped wealth of talent in unsigned noise bands as being the only true art to ever exist.
OK I'm done.

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Hmmm I never thought of VNV Nation as Industrial(I actually discovered them because of their Theatre of Tragedy remixes), to me they sound more techno than anything. I've just discovered Wumpscut, some of their shit is REALLY good(blutkind, bone peeler, bunkertor 7) and some I'm just not sure about ...yet
-
Re: Hey, what about industrial?
VNV is technically "futurepop" or some other such nonsense. Whatever. If Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys had an assbaby who liked 242....there you have it.

Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Question: Does KMFDM, one of my all-time favorites, really stand for KillMotherFuckingDepecheMode, or is that an urban legend? I've heard it both ways, but someone here is bound to know the real answer.
I'll have to check out the link for your band sometime, Alexxa...
BTW, how's it going with the smoking thing?
-
Re: Hey, what about industrial?
KMFDM:Kein Mitleid Für Die Mehrheit. I might have confused the two "M" words, switched them around, but that's it. Roughly translated I believe it is "No pity for the majority". There used to be an amusing list on the KMFDM site of various possibilities for the acronym. The Depeche Mode one, "Kylie Minogue Fans Daily Masturbate", I dont really recall them all but there were a dozen or so.

No, KMFDM stands for some German thing - I wouldn't even know how to spell it if I tried. :O I think they say it at the beginning of "Juke Joint Jezebel".
The non-smoking thing is actually (surprisingly) going fairly well. I'm on Day 6. The worst part is not having a smoke when I first wake up. That was always my favorite cigarette of the day. I also miss taking smoke breaks with my girls at work....but I feel so much healthier now, I don't want to screw it all up.
How are things on your end? Still rolling your own?
-
Re: Hey, what about industrial?
Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid
(which loosely translated means: no pity for the majority)
And yes, it is proper German to say "Kein Mitleid Für Die Mehrheit", but the question refers to KMFDM, not proper German.

Die Krupps - To the Hilt (Clawfinger remix)
