Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
This is going out to all the DJ's here in Music Mix.
There's a lot on here about what to play in the club. However, I'd like to start a list of things you should NOT play in a strip club. If the song has a great beat, seems danceable, and everyone likes it, that doesn't necessarily mean it's appropriate for the club. Tonight I was forced to dance to "What's My Name" by Snoop Doggy Dogg. Here I am, a girl so pale I glow in blacklight, trying to look sexy while a chorus sings "bow wow wow yippy yo yippy yay" and dogs woof in the background. So we'll start the list with this one. NEVER IN THE CLUB, guys. Yes, I like that song and it's fun. But you are not helping a beautiful woman make any money when the woofers are actually woofing.
As a matter of fact, any song involving the word "dog" is not to be used in the club. That also means no "Who Let the Dogs Out" (not even for a break song). When in doubt, either ask the dancer or just don't play it.
Other songs that are inappropriate are songs encouraging violence against women. This would include "I Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her)," "Smack My Bitch Up," "The Lapdance Is So Much Better When the Stripper Is Crying," and Eminem's "Kim."
Unless pre-arranged beforehand with her, such offensive songs will often cost the dancer money, which will in turn decrease your tip. You don't want this. Work together with us and pay attention to what you are playing; this isn't your car. We are trying to sell a product here, not just rock out to whatever song has a good beat.
Ladies, any songs to add to the blacklist?

Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
one of the DJ's at my old club used to play that "she fuckin hates me" song quite a lot, and all of the girls would complain. it's just not a nice song to dance to at all!!!
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
I don't know that one. Who sings it?

Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
I used to really hate it when they played "She's Got The Jack" by AC/DC. That was mentioned in another thread also. It's supposedly about a girl who has a certain STD. Not nice to be associated with while you're trying to sell.

Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
um...sorry but smack my bitch up is a staple song... that ALOT of girls ask for. Honestly I try to talk girls OUT of the jack at all costs as well as ape Me by Nirvanan(actualy I just flat out REFUSE to play that song). As far as she hates me..I have seveal girls that ask for that followed by get a job by offspring when customers are acting like cheap bastards.....kinda funny. I had one girl whos card said "Rock with no misogynistic lyrics"..whaich was too bad for her because I think I was the only d.j. who knew what that word ment, lol.

Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
This is your personal blacklist I guess... not everyone would agree... some dancers request the songs you think should never be played....

I love that you try to talk the girls outta "The Jack" because I don't think everyone knows what it means and would be mortified to dance to it if they did. Funny that you won't play "Rape Me"...that song is actually about Kurt vs. The Media so I like it and did dance to it. I actually thought it was fitting in that atmosphere where everyone has preconceived notions about dancers. But, like The Jack, not everyone knows this so I see your point.
I guess what Dlabtot says is true...what is one person's poison is another person's nectar.

Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
Yeah I have worked with a woman who asked for "Rape Me" every night, until I finally asked her if it was a good idea to play it, after the third or fourth night. I would have said something sooner, but she goes down in the record books as being the single most aggravating dancer I have ever worked with about music, out of myriads of fussy ones over the years.
I learned to dread her approach, as it would signal a ten minute angst-ridden discussion, complete with last minute total reversals, with no consideration whatsoever for the clientele mix. She is an attractive woman, and a great dancer, but the repeated ordeals every night have made it so I actually prefer it when she doesn't show up.
It was way worse at first, but over time, and with some diplomatic hints from one of the cool assistant managers, she has become more reasonable. At first, though, sometimes it was easier just to act really fucking busy--especially if I was--and play whatever the hell she wanted.
But that one I had to tell her was out, after a while.
I'm glad to know what it's really about, but most guys won't have a clue, and really don't need any more encouragement for their sexual aggression.

Point being MOST customers don't know the stories behind songs. For them the jack sounds like a song about poker.... and Rape Me sounds like..well....Hell there ALOT of songs (Digging in the Dirt by P.Gabriel about the time he beat his wife and Edge of the World by Faith No More about petaphiles) that subject matter are ickie but...if you dont know, it wont hurt you.
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
You just mentioned the one song that, although I knew about the subject matter, I danced to anyway because I just loved the slinky music and actually counted on the custies not knowing what it was about!
"Edge of the World"
Wow, you're good...I'm suitably impressed.

The DJ's at my club play this song too. I actually like when they play it. I'm usually hoping it opens up some cheap customers ears.
Usually it gets played on Fri/Sat though, when the club is being ran rampant by 18yr old boys and girls >:(

Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
Yeah, "Get a Job" is a great one! I've never danced to it but that's awesome. :D
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
Maybe you should give that list to your DJ. I have seen girls dance to all of those songs and make money to them. Its all about attitude and if you look comfortable on stage.
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
I have them play Queer by Garbage to make fun of cheapos but....
BIG no nos for me are Janie's Got A Gun by Aerosmith, and Never Again by Nickleback.

This is a very good point.
In some clubs, such as my present one, the intelligence level of the customers is so low that you can play almost anything without a problem. The lyrics are the last thing on these guys minds, lol...
But the number one factor in my mind, when choosing a song, is the comfort level of the dancer herself. If she hates it, for whatever reason, she's not going to dance as well. So I avoid this situation at all costs.
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
I think as long as there isn't a dog barking in the song etc., you shouldn't read to much into song lyrics. I'm kinda in agreement w/ Kharisma on this one and I don't think customers really care all that much anyway.
I've danced to Rape Me and Moist Vagina by Nirvana and I would do it again!!!!!!!!! }:D
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
Are we at least in agreement that dog songs are inappropriate? I just can't think of anyone who has wanted to dance to barking dogs or "Who Let the Dogs Out."
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
^^^*hand up*
I agree...no dog songs.
What about kitty songs?;)
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
Kitty songs are great! "Pussy" by Lords of Acid is my favorite for two-girl shows!
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
I have bestowed "The Naughty Little Pussycat" epithet on a couple of dancers who wore it very well, so I have a fondness for songs about kitties. There's a few out there.
I can see the revulsion for "Dog" songs, but there is another Lords of Acid song called "Move Over Rover" (I think), which isn't about dogs, but fucking doggie-style. It's raunchy as hell, but has a killer beat, and several dancers I have played it for love it--or I wouldn't play it, of course!
-
Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
Djoser: It's "Rover Take Over", and yeah....it's filthy! Fun song though.
Dog sounds? Hmmm...."Been Caught Stealing" still gets played sometimes, but I do talk over the barks at the beginning. That's about it. Like several people said, it's all subjective. I'm not a big fan of "Rape Me", either....but hey. How about "Prison Sex" by Tool? Lots of girls like this song and don't know the "I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this shit, blood and cum on my hands" line. Different strokes and all that.

Re: Attention DJ's: Pay Attention.
Thanks, Mr.C--I know it as "track #3" best, lol--and I was too lazy to go look in the CD book sitting less than 5 feet from me!
The best (or worst, if your DJ is asshole enough to use it inappropriately) 'barking dogs' soundbite I have heard is from that one Sublime song--I'm not too lazy to go look it up, though--someone stole that CD from me three or four years ago. They were snarling and sounded vicious as hell...

Now "Polly" on the other hand...

"Waiting for My Ruca" off of 40 Oz. to Freedom... Also the beginning of "Hong Kong Phooey"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I have yet to see anybody dance to "Get Low" by Lil' Jon, but I know it was funny watching little 16-year-old girls dance to it at my little sister's prom singing along (esp. the "sweat drip down my balls" part :D
