No More Strip Club DJ'S..?
I worked a new club the other night that has a computerised music console which the bar staff run and do the occasional voice over. I was amazed there wasnt a DJ as its a medium size club (30 girls on, SRhino style). The owner was open about the fact he didnt want to pay a DJ.
Is this becoming more common? Do you work in or know any other clubs that are DJ-less??
And does the club suffer (atmosphere lacking etc) or profit in any way (less tip-outs, bitchiness etc) as a result of this?
Re: No More Strip Club DJ'S..?
Naturally we DJs think it's a rotten idea, lol...
There are some clubs which do well without one, such as the ever-successfull Mons Venus in Tampa--but I think in their case it has a lot more to do with rigorous hiring standards than not using a DJ.
God knows I've been in clubs that had DJs so f*cking rotten and cheesy they would have been better off with a jukebox, too!
But if you have a good DJ, who knows what he/she is doing, then there is a big advantage--they know the dancing styles of the various dancers intimately and can come up with new stuff for them to keep it lively, instead of playing the same shit over and over and over again.
They can get the customers up and tipping the dancers instead of sitting there like logs, and also egg them on into VIP with you--very important.
They can read the crowd and find good compromise between what the dancer will perform most effectively with and what will keep paying customers entertained, happy, and continuously spending.
They can find unique elements of the dancers' personalities and talk them up for them, and also spur them on to dance even better than ordinarily--though this talent seems to be quite rare, and generally totallyunappreciated by management. It's also harder to pull this off in the bigger 'factory' style clubs with 120 dancers, and numerous dancers performing simultaneously.
I'm the first one to bash the typical drunken idiot DJ, playing what he likes, making cheesy and insulting comments, irritating everyone with those godawful nasal voices that sound like their testicles were removed years ago, and all they do is watch bad TV game shows for inspiration, trying to fuck everything that moves except the customers.
They are out there, too--hordes of them--giving all of us a bad name...

I think it's a good idea for some clubs. Yay robo-DJs!
