Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
A small portion because I'm not sure about posting the entire lyrics to a song here after reading the cautions re: copyrighted articles. And in the case of my choice, I've not been able to find a link to the full lyrics after spending quite a bit of time searching!
Also, besides the portion of lyric you choose, why did you make this particular choice?
As much as I love Warren Zevon's "Disorder in the House," I have to choose the brief chorus of country-western singer, Ray Wylie Hubbard's ballad, "Loco Gringo's Lament." Here is the chorus:
"It is such a sweet temptation/
It gives such a brief relief/
It is such a false sensation/
How come that's so hard to believe/"
It just now occured to me that these lyrics would be a good description of an SC, or perhaps going to a movie at a theater. But this isn't the reason for my choice.
The choice was made because it is reflective of the "Maya," of several of the eastern religions. "Maya" meaning that all we think we know of the "reality" of this world is in actuality an illusion. Or if you prefer western philosophy, "Plato's Cave," if you will. This reflects a major portion of my own personal beliefs, but not totally so.

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
"Plato's Cave" was a very great help to me about three years ago, when I was going through some nasty shit.
Of course a good deal of the helpful effect was due to the woman who recommended I read that passage, lol--but we won't get into that.
It's alright you didn't post the lyrics to the entire song, I never read them all anyway, and it's usually overkill. Quoting the best parts is much preferable in my mind, though I wouldn't ever stop anyone from indulging themselves or anyone else by posting all of it.
There are lots of songs which have especially meaningful passages, I like this idea a lot--good job, PhaedrusZ...

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
There are eighteen zillion sites on the net which post lyrics without permission. As far as I've seen, it's only enforced when you're writing a book or making your own music.
I feel sometimes that I should get this musical phrase as a tattoo
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
Pink Floyd, of course.

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
See, I like that--short and to the point...
That, I can read. But whenever I see a gigantic post with pretty, italicized lyrics scrolling down the page, I move right along.
Occasionally I might be missing out, but most lyrics aren't poetry--though some are--but so many pretend to be, and fail miserably, when compared to the real thing.
Again, this is only my opinion...

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
It hasn't been set to music lately, but I personally find a lot of meaning in Psalm 120, especially the last two lines (which sum up so many things to me, including elements of my own life and also my Zionist ideals)...
Too long has my soul dwelt with him who hates peace.
I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.
I've thought about having the last verse tattooed around my ankle in Hebrew, like an anklet. "Ani shalom v'ki adaber hema l'milchama" (in Hebrew letters, though). I've thought about it for years but haven't had the guts or the money, and besides, I'm not sure what it says to get a Jewish tattoo when most interpretations of Jewish law forbid tattooing.

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
Since when have you worried about tradition, and what people say you are or aren't supposed to do?
You are your own law, the good kind...

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
You'd be surprised. I was an Orthodox housewife and Judaism is extremely important to me. I think about that every time I see those delicious shrimp and turn them down... *sigh*
There are a few tattoos I want, but I only want one tattoo and I can't decide which to get. The other two: the Southern Cross (a constellation on the Australian flag) tattooed on my ankle, or a small magnolia flower between my shoulder blades (for my Southern heritage, which I'm very proud of). I'm really tempted to get the magnolia flower but a tattoo is just so much commitment.
Anyway, back to the topic, I also like the song "Screenwriter's Blues" and especially one line: "I am going to Los Angeles to see my own name on a screen, five feet long and luminous!" That line jumped out at me after I entered the industry but before I moved out here, and I find it funny and depressing and true all at the same time. Har.

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
I have a intense attachment to Roxy Music's "To Turn You On" from Avalon (1982). The verses: "Who cares about you/ except me/ God help me".........I have lived it....("TTYO" is also about NYC, which dazzled my bumpkin a*s).....
It also reminds me of the end of the movie "Excalibur" (1981)when King Arthur grabs Guinivere before he's going to fight Mordred & tells her he wishes they could have a life together as an ordinary couple. Sigh, swoon......

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
yeah... from this song 'people are strange' - the doors -
People are strange, when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly, when you're alone
Women seem wicked, when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven, you know, when you're down
When you're strange, faces come out of the rain
When you're strange, no one remembers your name
When you're strange, when you're strange
When you're, strange

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
I like this thread more all the time...
thanks for posting, everyone.
Cristalla, as many times as I've heard that song, I never really paid attention to the lyrics, other than the obvious chorus.
If you had posted the entire song's lyrics, I would have undoubtably moved blithely right along as I always do.
But I'm glad I did read them, as this is so relevant to me being here in Daytona, lolol.
To me, this whole town, and almost everyone in it, is very strange--but they see me as being so, trust me--as popular as I have been, and could be again with a little effort. At this point, I could care less for popularity, I'm kind of beyond that now. But nonetheless the way people perceive you, when you're 'strange'--and your resultant perception of them in return, is interesting, alright...
MadMaxine, I like Roxy Music a lot, I think it'd be cool to play some in the club--is that song danceable? I could just DL the damned thing myself and find out, but I currently have a gigantic backlog of high bitrate songs waiting to be DLed already for tomorrow night, lol.
And last, but most emphatically not least, Yekhefah...
Fuck the law, get the damned tattoo. Of course I understand the waiting thing--I have at last decided to get one, the one I've been debating for years now, and now that I've decided to do it, what's the big rush? But much as I hate spur of the moment, poorly designed and/or placed tattoos (this town is full of them!), yours sound good, and I know with your artistic inclination you'll choose wisely.

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
i have to add my favorite band Alice in Chains
the song down in a hole
.......You don't understand who they
Thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
Who won't let himself be
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, out of control
I'd like to fly but my
Wings have been so denied ...
-
Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
I've been getting into Alice in Chains a lot recently, especially since I picked up a 3 Cd boxed set with some really cool new versions of some of their songs.
"Man in a Box" is great, too...

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
I have many, but this one in particular is special. I played it for my wife, long ago when I asked her to marry me. It sounds corny out of context, and may be a few lines too long for Djoser to get thru....but it's a beautiful song. "Prithee" by Edward Ka-Spel.
You make the sun shine...
Keep me warm at night.
Sometimes,
You are my guiding light.
When I'm weak or desperate,
You'll stretch out your hand...
It's a hand that offers courage...
It's a hand that calms me down...
And leads me to a land
That we discovered countless lives ago.
Still young enough to change this wicked world...
So tell me, Angel, where to now ?
Shall we chase rainbows?
Ride the stars by night?
Stay close...
Be my second sight...
Show me our tomorrows
'Cause I can't dream alone...
-
Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
Nah, after reading what it was used for, I had to read the whole thing, lol--that's pretty cool. What a great way to propose...
I especially like "So tell me, Angel, where to now?", having used the title "Angel" in various ways, for very special dancers.
-
Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
What was especially cool, I have met this artist several times. I told him about using the song...and he was almost speechless. It was really amazing. He gave us both a huge hug and just kept smiling. The wife and I will be seeing his band the Legendary Pink Dots in NYC for 2 nights running next month. It's their 25th anniversary tour. Pure genius, personally.
-
Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
Could it be used in a club? I have a dancer I work with who is actually named "Angel" (and for once it fits, lol), not just one I have bestowed the additional title to.
She might like it, and it'd be really cool to play it for her. Can it be DLed, if it's at all appropriate? Remember, there are no rules in my old/new club (yes, I'm going back there tomorrow).
-
Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
On second thought, never mind--and I apologize if it seemed crass of me to think of using this song which is so special to you in a club.
If you saw the girl, you might understand--there are certain special ones who merit playing the sexy love songs for, if the time is right, like say Sophie B. Hawkins "Damn I Wish (I was Your Lover)", etc.
She's one of those, trust me...

Which is why, I guess, I find so many of Leonard Cohen's lyrics so interesting. You have to remember what he was doing before he started writing songs.

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
When my grandmother died I was listening to Pearl Jam, as the phone rang to tell me the news Black started playing so that song always makes me think of her. However Cemetary gates ALWAYS gets me.....
And when she died
I couldn't cry
The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
Memories now unfold
Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the
Cemetery gates
Sometimes when I'm alone
I wonder aloud
If you're watching over me
Some place far abound
I must reverse my life
I can't live in the past
Then set my soul free
Belong to me at last

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
Whenever I dance to the song who's lyrics are "You, you've got a nasty reputation..." Just really makes me laugh on stage and it isn't too meaningful but I sincerely think they may be talking about me.

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
My 2 fav lyrics:
1. Nine Inch Nails - Ringfinger
"If I was twice the man I could be, I'd still be half of what you'd need"
2. Nine Inch Nails - The Only Time
"...my moral standing in lying down."

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
Just to throw in a little free spirited cheese how about White Lion's "Livin' On The Edge"
I GOT A USED LEATHER JACKET AND AN OLD
PAIR OF BOOTS
WITH HOLES IN THE SOLES
AND MY 501 BLUES HAVE SEEN BETTER
OF DAYS
NOW I DON'T HAVE A PLACE THAT'LL KEEP
ME WARM
AND I CAN CALL MY OWN
WHEN YOU AIN'T GOT ANY MONEY YOU CAN'T
PAY NO RENT
AND YOU'RE OUT
I'M GONNA BE ALL RIGHT
SO I PACK MY BAGS AND RIDE INTO
THE SUNSET
I DON'T KNOW WHERE I'M GONNA GO BUT
THAT DON'T MATTER AT ALL
I GOT A COLLEGE DEGREE THAT MEANS
NOTHING TO ME
AND I AIN'T GOT A JOB
CAUSE I DON'T WANT ANYBODY TELLING ME
WHAT TO DO
I GOT BAD REPUTATION AND A STORY
TO MATCH
SO LEAVE ME ALONE
THE WIND AT MY HEELS AND THE SOUND OF
MY WHEELS KEEP ME GOING
YES I'M GONNA BE ALL RIGHT
SO I PACK MY BAGS AND RIDE INTO
THE SUNSET
I DON'T KNOW WHERE I'M GONNA GO BUT
THAT DON'T MATTER AT ALL
I'M GONNA DO IT MY WAY AND I DON'T
CHANGE FOR NO ONE
YEAH I'M LIVING ON THE EDGE AND I GOT
NOTHING TO LOSE
SO I KEEP MY MOTOR RUNNING
ALL THROUGH THIS ENDLESS
SUMMER NIGHT
AND THERE'S NO ONE WHO CAN
TOUCH ME
IT'S ONLY ME AND MY WHEELS

Re: Is there a small portion of one song lyric which you find especially meaningful?
I always liked Sublime, though this wasn't really my favorite by them--now I have come to appreciate it a lot more, since it was one of my good friend's favorites, and he did get shot.
"...Well, life is (too short), so love the one you got
'Cause you might get runover or you might get shot...
...(That's) why I don't cry when my dog runs away
I don't get angry at the bills I have to pay
I don't get angry when my Mom smokes pot
Hits the bottle and goes right to the rock
Fuckin' and fightin', it's all the same
Livin' with Louie dog's the only way to stay sane
Let the lovin', let the lovin' come back to me
Lovin', is what I got, I said remember that..."
The world is a worse place for his loss, but I'm a better man for having known him.
I find inspiration from it, even if the one line is eerily ironic.
