Re: I AM a medical circus!
I used to get sleep paralysis all through adolescence, it sucks big time. Sleeping on my side helped a bit.
Hope all goes well with yer meds.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Im glad you ended up going to the doc. Its great to know something can help you otoh I hope you dont have to get the other drug to help you sleep better.
At least you took the jump to get help for your sleeping. <<Thats the good thing.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Paige, if you take GHB, how can you wake up if there's an emergency?
Re: I AM a medical circus!
^ I was wondering the same thing. Knocking yourself into a coma doesn't sound like the most brilliant idea. Maybe they can give a really teeny dose or something?
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Since we didnt start out with that rescription, I'm not sure as to the details. I doubt it would be the same exact dosage... there has to be more to it. We shall see how this other medication works. If it comes down to the GHB, I'll be sure to update as to how it's gonna work.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Imipramine and venlafaxine are often used. Be careful of side effects (especially with former).
GHB (Xyrem) may actually be your best bet.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
I have sleep issues too. Nothing like what you are going through, but sleep is very elusive for me. I have done all the sleeping pills, with no winners. I actually have to take Seroquel, in a very high dose to sleep. Everybody that knows me knows half an hour after I take my meds, there is no waking me up, no moving me, no trying to get me to do anything. It sucks, but that's what works.
Keep trying to find what will work for you, eventually you will find it!
Re: I AM a medical circus!
wow, I'm really surprised that GHB is the drug they are going to use...
Good luck :) I'm glad you are going to get this all figured out
Re: I AM a medical circus!
I've had sleep issues as long as I can remember . My best friend takes Serequel and it works very well for him. He once gave me half of one and I slept for 36 hours ...on our vacation !! No more coma pills for me .I would be interested to know how the GHB would work for that...doesn't it also burn fat? BONUS!
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Ok, sleep paralysis.. I suffer from major insomnia and when I do sleep, I am somewhat awake and somewhat asleep and CAN NOT move for the life of me, as much as I try to pull myself up or get up I can't. Guess I'm asking what it exactly is... I was once told that I'm inbetween REM sleep and being awake? Its freaky as hell though.. I can hear my phone ring and I can't move.... I'm concious but my body will not cooperate. Just wondering what it is exactly and perhaps if I am just "stuck" in exhausted mode due to lack of sleep when this happens.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
If you do end up getting GHB whatever you do never drink any booze before or after taking it. I once saw a girl OD after having one glass of wine after she had taken a cap of GHB.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Wow 36 hours? I know it does knock people out, when I was married my hubby took some (like 25mg which is nothing to me) and he was gone. There was no moving him, anything! Guess I am so used to it after 7 years it takes a miracle to take 1000mg at night and ever wake up.
Paige if they ever suggest Seroquel to you, read up on it first. You really are basically in a coma, and there is no waking up. And don't EVER drink with it, it can slow down your breathing enough that you just quit. They seem to leave out some of the side effects at the pharmacy.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
I could have used something in the six months after November, I could not sleep for sh*t!
It seems to have gotten better in the last month, thank god.
What is 'sleep paralysis'?

Sleep paralysis is a condition characterized by temporary paralysis of the body shortly after waking up (known as hypnopompic paralysis) or, less often, shortly before falling asleep (known as hypnagogic paralysis).
Physiologically, it is closely related to the normal paralysis that occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, also known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain is awakened from an REM state into essentially a normal fully awake state, but the bodily paralysis is still occurring. This causes the person to be fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, this state is usually accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
the only thing i can figure about the ghb. is it will put you out for one to four hours( G nap) and then you will wake up fast. so maybe no parayslis. not to meniton you WILL sleep.
plus you will feel pretty festive before you fall asleep hehe

That could be why. We definitely had more than a few drinks that day....and it was weird. It was almost like being awake but unable to move. I remember hearing the TV and room service being delivered but I physically could not move and I remember thinking, "What time is it? I have to get up! I'm on vacation!"......freaky
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Years of wacky bartending hours has utterly destroyed my sleep patterns. Now I am hardwired to get very little sleep most days. I count myself lucky if I sleep for more then 5 hours.
Ive never even looked into any sort of help or meds to thsi condition. I didnt even think there was such a thing. I just figured I was resigned to being like this all the time.
I know I am risking sounding like a complete dolt, but there are meds and such that could help beyond that over the counter sleeping pills? (Which, on me, are as effective as eating canned spam in terms of helping me sleep).

I'm on Lunesta now. Its a lil weaker than most prescription sleep meds, but it can be prescribed long term for folks like me with life-long insomnia problems. For short term, Sonata was nice, and Ambein. I also use Diazepam sometimes.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Ok! Well night one with the new meds was... interesting. They've given me Imipramine. So Lunesta + Diazepam + Effexor + Imipramine = I slept from 2am until 8pm. Holy sh.....stuff. Well, I dont even remember if I was paralyzed at all, but I know I sure slept well. I suppose I need to try it out for a while, see if it works... see if I actually WILL need the GHB or not. I'm hoping this one here will do the trick. The side effects suck though. Constant cotton mouth, cramps, and WEIGHT GAIN (ugh).
Re: I AM a medical circus!
I think i've tried everything for my stripper time sleep issues.
Ambien worked for 3 years and would work now if my doc hadn't cut me off in fear my liver would die out.
I tried to explain that if it hadn't now with the life I've lead., it probably wasn't going to.
Ambien caused me to trip nuts if I didnt go right to bed. I'd talk to shadows and call people and talk about ..milk baths? No clue on that one. And I mean talk for HOURS>
It got to the point that i'd wince in checking my call log on my cell phone.
Way worse then a drunken dial.
But lunesta has me wondering., is it as strong as ambien?
Ive taken trazidon? Or something like that and it did nothing.
Im taking a ton of over the counter shit at the moment which is way worse then RX stuff.
Id like to find something I could take again without the horrid side effects and would be effective.
Re: I AM a medical circus!
Lunesta isnt as strong, which is why doctors will prescribe it for long term use.
