Re: Stripping in disguise
I like your idea of the wig and the contacts. I guarantee there will be someone who will see you during your work there in your town. There is no such thing as invisible. I worked in a town of half a million and still had people come into my club. When it happened I just rolled it off my back.
Is there any way you can travel out of town a bit to work thats not too far? As for your medical career - maybe someone can offer advice on how it might effect it.
Re: Stripping in disguise
Agreed, if your in a relatively small town and you do it for long enough you will eventually run into somebody.
I worked in Houston, Texas for a major Oil & Gas Corporation and tried dancing in disguise. Within the first month, one of my coworkers came up to the stage and tipped me with a wink*wink.
And personally speaking, wigs are a complete pain in the ass to wear when your dancing. For me, they are hot, sweaty, and just a hassle to keep in place.
Re: Stripping in disguise
I would drive a ways down the road to dance if your worried... I would not work in a college town... hell no... You're definitely going to run in to people from school... I"m telling you go at least 30+ minutes away....
Re: Stripping in disguise
Honestly, I don't think it behooves you to dance if you can't afford to get caught doing it. People usually find out, one way or another. People who do get away with it are probably exceptions to the rule.
I also don't think a wig and contacts constitute much of a disguise.
I'm just being what I think is realistic here.
Re: Stripping in disguise
It's actually not all that uncommon for people two strip their way through school. And if you do get reconized, after you graduate you can work in an area farther away where ppl don't know your history.

I think it actually depends on how different the wig is from your normal look as well. For AKON (anime convention), my girlfriend had a short, blonde wig on as part of her costume. Normally her hair is long, brown, and down to her waist. Nobody recognized her. She looked like a completely different person.
Re: Stripping in disguise
Thanks for your ideas. Working further away is something I've thought about but it'd be difficult - the next club is an hours drive away, and I hardly have the money for food let alone a car >:(
Maybe I should invest in a pair of those glasses with a nose and mustache attached

Re: Stripping in disguise
Wigs in particular will reduce the odds of a casual acquaintance recognising you - particularly if you have short hair and wear a long wig.
I've known one particular dancer for 5 years, and from time to time give her lifts. One evening will always stick in my mind. I went to pick her up from the station. Earlier that day, (and unknown to me), she'd had her hair cut short and dyed blonde. I was looking for a long haired brunette and at first completely failed to pick her out in the crowd.
When we got to the venue she changed while I parked myself at the bar. She'd also not told me she was going to work in a wig, so when she came out of the changing room I again failed to recognise her until she got within a few feet.
Fooled twice in one night!
You look for what you expect to see, and if your appearance is different from what people expect, the mind takes a few seconds to catch up with reality.
Point of this story is, if someone knows you and gets close enough, they'll recognise you, even in a wig. However, it might tip the balance if the person is a casual acquaintance.
If you can't afford to get recognised, can you work for long enough in your local club to get the $$$'s for a "rent a wreck" car, and then use that to drive to a club a bit further away?
Phil.
Re: Stripping in disguise
There's a convention each March where it has all the professionals that are in my career and I go to that convention. At first I was thinking that maybe I wouldn't work that week but now I'm thinking of getting a really nice wig & disguising myself too.
Plus if you see someone you know, just don't walk by them or dance for them. If they're near your stage, turn around so your butt faces them instead of your face.
I haven't decided completely. It'll depend on how good a wig I can get.
Bite, I say GO FOR IT!!! I was afraid of that too and you know what, I wouldn't change it for anything. I'm in the healthcare field too and own a small business in that field and was scared to death someone seeing me. So far, nobody has and if so, I don't care.....that much! Go for it, you won't regret it and you can always travel out about an hour or so, then you won't be worried every single second you're there! Good luck!
Re: Stripping in disguise
Well, maybe if you get the wig, and dance there for a week or so you'll have enough money to drive to the clubs that are an hour a way, but no matter what when you dance you will always run into some one you know. Hell I bet if you move to china and dance sooner or later you'll run into someone who knows you from the usa. I kid you not, that's the biz. But what I've notice is these people have always bought dances from me. I guess they feel like I won't gyp them or something, even if I do, they still don't feel gypped. ::)
But it is possible to disguise yourself. Look at that chick from alias. :P
When I do parties I wear long straight wigs.
When I'm at the club I wear an afro wig contacts false eye lashes, and a bunch of make up.
I left a party and went to the club, changed it up, and a guy who was at the party I just left didn't know it was me. 8)

Re: Stripping in disguise
I know my ex used to work security at a couple of nightclubs and occasionally people from his day job would see him there and then tell him, "Oh, I saw this guy working at Empire that sort of looked like you." The fact that he was in a totally different setting and wearing totally different clothing made them think that it wasn't really him and he sure wasn't wearing a wig or anything to disguise himself. So perhaps the fact that you are in a place they wouldn't expect you would work to your advantage and if you add on a wig or just a clip on ponytail or something and wear fake eyelashes, tons of makeup, etc., you would incrase the possibility you won't get recognized. I have to admit though the few times I danced I was so paranoid about someone I knew coming in it made it hard for me.
