It's best not to talk about special deals on a message board. Since those deals are outside generally accepted practice, and possibly less than ethical or less than legal, even though it's all widely done across a variety of places and a variety of professions, open discussion about it is inadvisable and usually resented.
In my profession, of course, I don't cut special deals for anyone or show any favoritism. But it's obvious that it exists, and I don't want it talked about openly, either.

Thanks, Jay.
Now that I've read through more of the postings on the board, I realize I was actually being offensive due to lack of understanding of the terminology. I won't bring up the "e" word again.
The posting above by azcustomer sums up all I wanted to say, and with much better descriptive powers, too.

Another customer perspective -- I think I fit the customer profile that Scout mentioned -- money to spend, but a budget in mind.
Asking up front if I plan to spend money. I would probably take some offense, even if it is done with a big smile and a lot of humor. Risky at best, and I am likely to start looking for the next dancer.
Asking for a dance without sitting down If a dancer asks for a dance without even sitting down, then probably the only thing I know about her is what she looks like, and just a hint of her personality. If she is a complete knock-out, that might be enought to get me to buy a dance, and it might also work if there are too many guys and not enough dancers. But for most dancers, whose sales pitch involves a mix of looks, body language and personality, I think the cold question would fall flat on a normal night.
Tour of the VIP Rooms Everybody does this -- if I am not interested already it is a waste of both of our time. I am interested in the dancer. If I wanted to sit in a fancy room I coulc go to a lot of places where I could do it a lot cheaper.
Doing a couple dances first. This is the approach that works for me -- if I am excited about spending more time with the dancer after a couple dances, I can be sold pretty easily. No tour necessary. For some reason, there seem to be fewer threads on SW about how to get a customer to buy more dances than there are about how to get the first one, but there are some good threads on the topic.
Just this guy's 2 cents.
