Buy a low-priced acoustic guitar. That way you can hear your mistakes and correct them, versus a distorted electric guitar feed. A nice used guitar will run you $75-$130 USD.
BEFORE you buy the guitar, check to see the neck is not bent, that the strings are close to the fretboard versus higher (called "action") Check the bridge & bottom to make sure there are no cracks. It would shock you what people do to guitars.
Invest in some lessons from a local musician or buy the classic Mel Bay book.
PS Learning piano is a good introduction to learning guitar, they are similar instruments.
i already play the keyboard kinda like the piano.
Thanx for the advice madmaxine!!
Um...time to be a total dick and say PLEASE ignore the previous advice post. While you CAN start on acoustic you can also start on electric (um..electric guitars arent always distorted......just for your info). There are some good starter packs made by epiphone, Ibenex, Yamaha that include guitar, strap, tuner, small amp, and a beginner dvd. Finding lessons is easy, just go to a local music store and look on there buliten board or look on craigs list, but shop around and find a good one. Don't get stressed out because you probably wont be kickin the jams out right off the bat. Books are ok but theres certian things you just cant get from a book and of course it can't answer any questions. Calling piano and guiar simmalr is just silly by the way. And before anyone jumps down my throat with "what the hell do you know".....

I know more than enuff.
^^^That guy is my guitar teacher, btw. Well...when either of us have time and working vehicles. The only thing I appreciate about knowing how to play the piano as it applies to the guitar is that I know what certain notes sound like. Oh, and reading music, too. I never use my pinkies when I play the piano and it's a bitch trying not to on the guitar, I'll tell ya that much. Not that I have practiced in a couple of weeks, because...well....I suck. Yeah.
Im learning guitar, and my husband is very good at it. I believe people suggest learning acoustic first because it's more difficult and once you can play an acoustic well, you can easily pick up and electric *shrug*
As far as the height of the action-that's easily fixable. You can restring your guitar with new strings that make the action lower and easier to play. I just picked up an Epiphone and it's quite nice, the action's just a little high so I'm going to have to restring it.
There's a guy where I am staying (until I move in a week, lol) who plays as well as anyone I've heard in years, and he just told me he doesn't know how to read music, even!
I taught lessons for years, and IME it is easier for beginners to learn on electric. I'd recommend getting an inexpensive Fender Squire or Epiphone. Also I recommend getting one of the small multiFX/"Amp Modelers" instead of an actual amp, something like the inexpensive Zoom or Digitech units. It will sound much better in the headphones than the typical small amp, and your neighbors and roomates will be grateful as well. Plus you can plug it into your computer's sound card to practice along with MP3 or Midi backing tracks, record yourself, etc.
Thanx for all your advice everyone.

Vampira - Do not start on the acoustic! Saying that if you get good on an acoustic you can play the electric well is completly incorrect unless you're talking about VERY basic playing.
Before I get started, let me say that I'm a Berklee College of Music grad (guitar principle) to give myself some modicum of credibility.
There are numerous techniques that you cannot learn on an acoustic. For example:
1. Tremolo (whammy) bar technique
2. How to play on the narrower, higher frets
3. Anything involving electronic manipulation of the pickups.
4. Most tapping (think "Eddie Van Halen") techniques
Additionally, there are many things that would be very difficult to practice on an acoustic that I won't go into.
Think about the style that you'd most like to play. If its folk or country rhythm guitar, then an acoustic would be the way to go. If its rock, electronic, jazz, blues or pretty much anything else contemporary, go with electric. You're eventually going to have to learn about amps, distortion, effects, etc. and your primary application of those things will be on an electric.
I really think you would be doing yourself a MAJOR disservice by starting on an acoustic.

you just lost any and all credibility right there!
;)
fuuuuuuuck that
blues is 9086850 times better on acoustic
i think you should learn fingerstyle picks are for pussies
haha
\but at the same time dont neglect strumming
but yeah think of the style you wanna play
you never actually "learn guitar"
its a progressive journey that never ends
My boyfriend mentioned that he saw guitar lessons on one of Comcast's "On Demand" channels. Eh, why not, they have karaoke. lol
I've seen thoes but you have to have an basic understandig of chords to do them, other than that they are slightly helpful. I also wouldnt recomend starting on accusitic UNLESS thats what your going for in a folky type way. Its easier to start on elecrtic and move/adapt to accustic later on if you want to...not just because thoes silly advanced tecniques are easier (girls just LEARNING here, tont think she'll be tapping in the neer future), but there just easier to play for the most part and you wont run ito the wall that alot of people starting out do.....frustration which makes you just not want to play anymore.Quote:

Im going to go in the shop on saturday and see that they recommend, I dont want to learn folk music, just rock music. I wanted an electric guitar then people started saying dont do that go for acoustic, now people are saying dont do that go for electric, argh!!!!
See what happens on sat, i'll keep u posted.
Bye for now!
don't worry, you'll be fine either way.... acoustic, electric, whatever, just get one and start playing! get the best instrument you can afford, it will pay off...
Well, I'm no Berkelee graduate, but I have taught many beginners to play. The main thing is, the acoustic steel string is harder to play, it takes longer to get your finger strength built up enough to hold the strings down. What I have seen is that many get discouraged and give up on it. Most females do not have as much finger strength as males do, also their fingers tend to be smaller. The electric necks are thinner and easier for small hands to grasp.
Really good point Hair!
I can't emphasize this enough - you need to buy an electric. If you want to play rock, you HAVE to get a feel for the electric and all the techniques that surround it. Don't just trust some music store guy. Most of them are not particularly knowledgable about playing the instruments (granted, some are - my first teacher worked at a music store and he's a virtuoso).
Sorry, I love the guitar. Its a huge part of my life. I really want everybody who's interested in it to do it right. Some people hate seeing poverty. I hate seeing guitar players with the wrong equipment. I'm sick. But I know a lot about the instrument.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Just to let you know that I have bought my ELECTRIC guitar!! Its an Epiphone one with amp, tuner, bag and 4 plectrums. All together it cost £230.
Going for my first lesson next sunday, the guy needs to ring me up for a time.
Anyway thanx for everyone that helped!!!
Bye for now
Congratulations on your purchase. :) May the two of you have many, many years together.
