Political statement on the 4th
So we are forced to work today as today falls on the monthly customer appreciation day where it is mandatory to work.
I would be elsewhere, but since they are making me work, I figured I will play music today that is meaningful to me. (As in protest music). Since the dances are discounted today, I really don't care if I offend anyone with my political statement.
So far here are some songs I thought of-
Rockin in the Free World (Neil Young)
Ohio (Neil Young)
American Woman
Fortunate Son (CCR)
Born in the USA (Springsteen)
(I though of Dead Kennedys or MC5, but I have to be able to dance to them, and they can't be so obvious that the DJ figures out what I'm up to.)
Anyone else feel like helping me raise some hell?
Re: Political statement on the 4th
"Let's Impeach the President," the new one from Neil Young. Though I guess the DJ might notice that one. I'm all over the CCR; that's excellent! Now if we could find a rock version of "This Land is Your Land."
Re: Political statement on the 4th
To level it out, play "American Soldier".
No matter what your politics, these people deserve your support. Plus they are better people in general than cops.
Re: Political statement on the 4th
Butthole surfers - Weird Revolution.. (grin)
Re: Political statement on the 4th
^ Thanks for the reminder. Who is the American Soldier song by?
I just dug up some Steve Earle. Hey, this is Texas. It'll work.
Re: Political statement on the 4th
If you want hardcore, and aren't worried about offending anyone, some of the songs we just talked about in the "Patriotic yet rockin'" thread would be perfect.
"America Number One" Consolidated--this is extremely hardcore, with one of the best, driving beats of any song, ever..
"I'm Afraid of Americans" NIN mix of a David Bowie song. If you really don't care who you offend, use the slow version.
We can put them on Soulseek for you, if there's time before work.
Re: Political statement on the 4th
I have 8 songs so I think it will work. Thanks for your input everyone, and have a happy 4th!
Re: Political statement on the 4th
"America Number One Is A Lie". I dunno...that one might get heavy objects thrown at the booth, Djoser. I saw Consolidated live a few times, and generally speaking about 75% of the audience either booed or stood there looking confused.
Re: Political statement on the 4th
Never had anything thrown at me anytime I've ever played it, which has been many, many times, in several different clubs. Though in one of them it was stretching the music rules a bit, lol...
Of course, this is Daytona Beach, people don't listen to lyrics here--or read either, for that matter.
But I just reread the OP, and yes, if her DJ was paying attention, he might become moderately annoyed.
Never seen Consolidated, but they are one of my favorite all-time bands, even if they are rampant commies. Like many of my favorite bands, much of their music is firmly in the "Skip ahead a bit, Brother Maynard..." category. Like a lot of the hardcore Austrian industrial--you'll have a great track, and then some horrible screeching shit, lol...
Also, their policy of opening the mike up during concerts for anyone to say anything would tend to hurt the flow, I imagine. Some of what is said on the CDs from their concerts is pretty funny stuff.
Re: Political statement on the 4th
Brief threadjack: Djoser, they only opened the floor up and passed the mics out at the end of the show usually, so it wasn't a big "flow" issue. They did it to get a response from people about their lyrics and the images shown on the projection screens onstage. Commies, Vegans, you pick it, they were it. (Btw, the remix of "Magic Carpet Ride" from the other thread...Philip Stier is from Consolidated if you didn't know)
We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread. Thank you.
Re: Political statement on the 4th
"American Solder" was popularized by Toby Keith of C&W fame. Good song.

Continuing the merciless jacking of Avacheetahs thread...
No, I didnt know that--no wonder I like that song. Consolidated are way, way out there, its true--but some of their songs have the best heavy beat imagineable--"America Number One" and "You Suck" being outstanding examples.
I think if the customers heard what the guy was singing I might have got some heat for it, but all they were hearing was "America number one..." over and over, and probably assumed that a different message was intended.
Such as in "American Woman" (actually not a complimentary song to American women at all), or "Im Afraid of Americans", which I have heard of being used in stage shows complete with American flags, etc, after 911, like Bowie wrote it in order to instill fear in Musilim terrorists, lol...
In clubs where people are literate and actually listen to lyrics it could definitely be risky, especially on July 4th, lol...
Probably a bad idea, come to think of it--though Im sure I will play it on other nights in other clubs if it appears likely to work.
Give us an update, Avacheetahs, how did your choices go over?
Re: Political statement on the 4th
Well it went just fine. The songs were all cut to 2 min that night because we were doing our once monthly $5 dance special and there weren't any complaints. I went on stage 6 times so i guess I could have used all of the suggestions and I regret not burning the MC5.
Thank God I didn't have to hear any Toby Keith that night or I might have thrown up. As it happened, I was the only girl there wearing red white and blue or who had planned any special music for the event. I guess I'm old school- but it made me happy to do something different.

Me too, Ava! I brought music, wore red and white (don't have anything blue) and made my entrances wrapped in a flag. I didn't see anyone else in the holiday spirit, not even those star-spangled bikinis. I felt like a bit of a dork, but then again I am a bit of a dork, so I just embraced my dorkiness and it paid off - had a great night.
