Thank you Mr Barrett...may you rest in peace.
A star too far... :'(
He was the definitive tortured artist. Just completely brilliant and influential. It seems like he never really found peace. I was happy to hear that his bandmates still made sure he got royalties instead of trying to shaft him.
Too many of the news reports mention the words, "Drug Causality." I think it does an injustice to Syd's legacy and his memory. From the interviews given over the years by members of Pink Floyd, it’s certain that Syd had a debilitating mental illness. Perhaps Syd's passing will make people more aware that schizophrenia is a life-long disease with varying treatments, but no cure. Sure, taking drugs may have triggered an illness that was already lurking in his neural synapses. Or he may have taken drugs to self-medicate the “voices” away. In either case, I hope that later in life he was happy planting his garden, painting his pictures, and riding his bicycle around Cambridge. If he was able to take some joy in these simple mundane pleasures, then his life could be counted as a small victory over a chronic illness. So many of the mentally ill don’t even get that.
On a lighter note, the lyrics of Arnold Layne remind me of some fetish strip club customers:
Arnold Layne (Barrett) 2:52
Arnold Layne had a strange hobby
Collecting clothes
Moonshine washing line
They suit him fine
On the wall hung a tall mirror
Distorted view, see through baby blue
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne
Now he's caught - a nasty sort of person
They gave him time
Doors bang - chain gang - he hates it
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne
Don't do it again
Cross-dressing never sounded so good!
Ogre from Skinny Puppy did "Scarecrow" for the first track on his first post-Puppy solo album. I loved it, but I think he did it on purpose to piss people off who bought the record expecting Skinny Puppy part deux. I agree that Mr Barrett had serious mental problems though. I do like that the reports say he died about a week before any word was leaked to the press, and no cause of death was given. The man liked his privacy, let him have it.
...and to date, Shine On You Crazy Diamond is still my favorite PF song by far. I've seen them in concert now three times and I always yearn for them to do another album. Still though, they wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for Syd's early influences and it's nice to see the band acknowledge that even though they had a rocky past together.
I'm not flaming this thread so please don't take offense this is one of those awesome compliments.
I can't stand pink floyd's music, never could, never will....
But as in my tribute thread in the lounge, I wish they would have done more. They've influenced so much in the music industry. Every band I have come to love will speak of their influence... therefor, knowing a member of this generation and iconic value has passed, sucks. :-/
