It seems like pretty much all music is acceptable at the SC, but I was curious if there are any genres or specific songs that are definitely to be avoided. Any input?? :)

Progressive rock doesn't go over well. The blood flow is NOT to the brain in the SC environment.
DJs always tell me to not play slow music. You can feel the downshift in energy when a slow song gets played, you don't want your custies getting bored.
You might want to avoid "Fistful of Rain" in a SC due to the chorus -Quote:

I don't really know anything about DJing anywhere, let alone in a SC. Still, I do not believe any dj who isn't at least partially insane would ever play this in any SC. Of course, I've been known to be wrong before.:)

Yeah so most (real/:O ;) ) punk rock is a no-no I would say... although of course there are some exceptions...
Edited to add - Dub
For Frith's sake, dont strip to Jesus! That just makes me lose hair.... egads. If I hear Spirit In The Sky one more time... a DJ is getting my size 10 work boots up the bootay!
I wouldnt recommend lengthy classical.... or really obscure folk... or um... hardcore. :O
I went to a club for an audition where they wouldnt play any RnB or hiphop.. apparently they thought it got the customers too upbeat and excited!! Only slow chilled out tracks allowed..... Couldnt handle that .. need my tunes!! :)
I have played anything and everything..... It all seems to depend on mood, timing, and clientel. I have been told not to play this or that and me being me ..... you just can't tell.
However... as a general rule I wouldn't play Sister Soulja or NWA at a KKK meeting nor would I play David Allen Coe at a Black Panther Party!!!

Thanks to all of you for posting your points of view. One quick question though... as far as "slow" songs are concerned, would a song with a tempo of... say... "Major Tom" be considered slow?
If by "Major Tom" you mean David Bowie's "Space Oddity", then yeah....that's crazy slow. The only percussion is the occasional handclap.
A girl at my club dances to....Bloodhound Gangs "Ballad of Chaisy Lane" Which I normally love..... but... :O
At work its like.... whoa! ::)
i've danced to it, but only when it was -really- slow. like, when we have 2 regulars in the club or no one at all. there are far better bowie songs for busier times.Quote:

OR if you actually meant the song "major tom" or "coming home" by peter schilling, then .... that song is fine i think... if the customers are right for it.
^ I frigging love those songs, but I save them for non-club occasions.
(I also love African tribal music, Native American flute songs....Mexican Highland folk...again, not right for the SC.)
I like obscure music too but I try to think of the poor ladies on the side stages.
I once worked at a place where I was forced to dance to Tejano music.
Since then, I ask myself- how shitty is this going to be for someone else to deal with?

What customers tend to be right for which music, would you all say?
;D One night our (old) manager put on NWA's Straight Outta Compton and everyone in the club was singing along. It was so funny! We wern't really busy, but I was surprised that so many people knew the words.Quote:

God I want to pull my hair out when I hear Hip Hop or R&B ... I've always found you cant go wrong with Rock Music... any club i've worked at when you play rock it picks things up. Punkish type music works great as well... also house/trance whatever the hell you want to call it. It has a good beat. Slow music or any lovey music KILLS the vibe of the club. I cant understand why girls dance to it.
Does the trance played have to be recognizable, or just sound good?
Music to avoid: Free Jazz, Hardcore like Black Flag or Negative Approach, Classical Indian Music, Ambient Music, Field Recordings. I listen to and enjoy all of the above at home, but they're strictly a no-no in the club.

Angry Johnny by Poe should NEVER be played in the club...
hahahaha!! :D All good advice!
If I hear the following in a SC, I leave.
1...Anything by Barry Manilow,Celine Dion,Barbara Streisand,Michael Jackson and R Kelly.
To Lucy Blue; I love it... did the same thing but I believe "Fuck The Police" was the song of choice after all those minderasers .... Eazy E's "Gimme Dat Nut" was a staple on a day shift I worked (I am not the world's biggest R&b or Rap fan) It was funny seeing these older white guys singing along to it.
"I've got a disease" and "that smell" should not be played in a strip club!
"letter to a john" by ani difranco.... unless it's your last night at the club and you want to do it purely for the sake of irony.
"don't ask me why i'm crying, i'm not gonna tell you what's wrong, i'm just gonna sit on your lap for $5 a song, i want you to pay me for my beauty, i think it's only right 'cuz i have been paying for it all of my life."
and THEN,
"i was 11 years old, he was as old as my dad, he took something from me i didn't even know that i had, so don't tell me about pride, just give me something for my troubles 'cuz this time it's not a free ride."
my itunes decided to play that in the middle of sex once. dude lost his erection in .5 seconds. can't even imagine what it'd do in a club.
