Very Important - Paypal Fraud
just so you know.. if you get an email from paypal saying that your account is going to be locked within 72 hours if you don't update your information... foward it to [email protected] and do not click on the links provided.
the email looks legit. i just opened one and, since i just made a fairly large purchase for adam's bday a few days ago, i thought something must have happened with my debit card so i clicked the link. after you click it, it asks for you to verify your debit card and ENTER YOUR DEBIT PIN... this is where a light went on in my head and i called paypals customer service. the woman on the phone said that many of these emails have been reported. i didnt enter my pin, but i did click the link and enter my debit card # so i had to change my paypal password and now i'll have to watch my bank account for awhile.

This scam has actually been around for an extremely long time. Still though, it's good to always have a heads-up about it.

Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
ive been getting a ton of those in my inbox latly.
Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
They call it Phishing. You find all Australain banks, Some US based Banks, Ebay, Paypal, Western Union, and just about anyone in the money business has been hit.
This kind of scam has been going on for years, but has grown in popularity due to the ease of use and success.
It used to be just the Nigerian Scam, funny that the money almost never went to Nigeria.
Ways to Tell:
Spelling Errors
Strange Formatting
The link does not actually go where it says it is going. (Eudora allows me to see the actual path of the link.)
Letter is from a place you do not do business with.
What to do:
Don't follow any links or instructions in the email.
-If you do follow a link it will be made to look like you are at your bank. Telltale signs are strange urls. I'd like to say you could call the bank and ask them if you are at the right place, but their level 1 supporters usually have such limited skills, they can't tell you that you need to dial the connection before firing up their corporate software.
You know how to get to your bank right? Go there on the net and log in, I'm sure you'll find nothing about the account. Call the bank and ask if whatever is being said in the letter has actually happened. Make sure you actually call them, and not a fake number
You can report the email, if you want, but I'm sure they have 2000+ as it is.
Delete the Email so no one else on your computer believes it
Warn family/friends

Use your virus scanner and spyware tools just in case something nasty ended up on your system. If you clickd on the link, they may have tried to get a keylogger onto your system.
Watch out for Pharming, this is the same thing, just over the phone.
Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
I never click a link in any email...especially one like that.
If I think that there is a problem, I go directly to the site and check my account.

^ I knew I left out the best advice.
Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
yeah, i've gotten many emails similar...paypal, ebay, and a few others. i get them ALL the time.
cally, if there is ever anything "weird" on your paypal account, paypal will call you to confirm that you have made such purchases, or whatever. They call me all the time! lol
Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
Yeah, i got one of those. I freaked out and was about to respond, but my aunt was in the room and told me of the scam.

Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
Legitimate companies never solicit for sensitive information (passwords, PIN's, etc). The only time they will ask you for that informaton is for security purposes, when you go to their site. They will not contact you and ask for it, EVER.
As for failed computer systems, the databases used for these purposes are backed-up somewhere other than the system itself. If they have a crash, they restore from the backups. They will never lose your information.
So, if you are asked for this info, it is a scam. Simply never give it out!
Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
No seriously, If you get an email from Mast asking for your SW password, it's legit I swear. Gnomes have really destroyed the password table in the sql database and only I can save it. :D
We're smarter than this. If you are uncomfortable with what the email is asking, PICK UP THE PHONE or Trash it. If it's important, it'll come again.

-Guess that explains the 10 emails today from 'Suncorp Metway' asking for my personal details, when I don't even have an account with them.
Re: Very Important - Paypal Fraud
