Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
Ok.. I've always been addicted to Discovery Health Channel, and the baby shows. But lately, they've been so morbid! Last night, on "Babies: Special Delivery", they had this young girl, absolutely beautiful, who'd been in the hospital for 2 months. She had been carrying twins, and had been admitted as soon as her Doctor had found that one of the twins had passed away. After two amnios in 2 weeks, she gave birth by C-Section at 36 weeks, and not only had to deliver the living twin, but the deceased one as well. I bawled my eyes out. You could just feel her pain. The Nurse that had been attending to her since her admittance made up a memory book for her, with the deceased baby's footprints, and had given her a gold band to wear around her neck for remembrance.
I can't imagine how hard it would be to deliver 2 babies, knowing that one of them was no longer alive. Ugh.
Anyway.. I have another issue.. Watching all these episodes, they do a lot of C-Sections. They show the prepping and all that. This has caused me to start freaking out about when I have to get prepped. Granted, I've had 2 C-Sections already, but the prepping was done fairly quickly with both of them, spur-of-the-moment almost, so I didn't have time to think about it, and it was over before I knew it. But, now I have time to mentally prepare in the next few weeks. The Spinal Block has got me freaking out the most. I remember THAT pain. The crap they inject you with first to numb you, hurts like a bitch going in. You don't feel the actual Spinal Block, but that first injection hurts. Then, there's the fun catheter. With the 2 C-Sections I've had, they've done the catheter first. I hope they do it after the Spinal this time, because that hurts like a bitch too. And if they do it after the Spinal, I won't feel it. They also don't let the Husband be present for the Spinal. They have a member of the staff hold you while you're hunched over a tray table in the OR. I'm going to try and wear my Doctor down, to make him agree to let Dan hold me while it's done instead. I think that may be a little easier for me. He probably won't agree to it, but it's worth a shot, right? Even though I'm trying to prepare myself, I can see that I'll be freaking out anyway.
And, to make matters worse, on another episode of that show, there was a girl having a C-Section. As soon as they made the initial incision, she screamed and said "I CAN FEEL THAT!" The Spinal didn't take. She had to be put completely under, and her husband had to leave the room. Another woman had the same thing happen, but she refused to be put under, so they numbed her layer-by-layer as they cut. ::shiver::
Man.. I wish I could do a VBAC so I could avoid all that crap. But, after 2 C-Sections, the risk is too great. On yet another episode of that show a while back, a woman was adamant about doing a VBAC, and refused a C-Section. Her uterus ruptured while she was pushing, and the baby didn't survive. It was stillborn.
So.. Does anyone have any tips that would help me keep my mind off of the whole procedure until it's actually time for it? I know that you all will say "Stop watching those shows!", but I can't. LOL. It's kind of a daily ritual now, and Delia's hooked on them as well. We TiVo them during our nap and watch them when we get up, like clockwork. Help.
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!

Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
Oh man.. Don't I know it. They grow up so fast. My other 3 kids are 14, 12, and 3 now. It seems like just yesterday that they were tiny little peanuts.
I've tried to watch those other shows, but they're too happy, and I get bored really quick. I'm twisted I guess, and I bring this on myself. Heh.
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
I watch discovery health too. I like to watch the shows on obesity and plastic surgery and sometimes the baby ones. Scares me to even think about having kids after seeing what some mothers go through. *shivers* Rhiannon, its one of those things you cant stop watching because its so scary or bad.
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
Oooh! I love the Plastic Surgery shows too! I'm such a DHC junkie, I swear. If the TV's not on Nickelodeon, Disney, Noggin, or BabyFirst TV, it's on Discovery Health.
I blame my Mother-In-Law. She got me hooked on that channel when she used to make me watch surgeries with her.. LOL
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
I don't watch those shows. The thing about those shows is that they USUALLY show worst case scenarios. I can't handle those...so I don't watch them.
I think you should turn the TV off and stop watching those shows for now.
About the Dan/Doctor debate...just tell the doctor "I'm paying your fee...I want Dan in the room. You can have the nurse in there, but Dan is holding me. It's not open for discussion." ;) See what he says. heh
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
Rhi, stop that shit! You can't watch morbid c-sections like that before you get one! :(
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
LOL I hadn't thought about trying that approach with him, but I think I definitely will when I go on the 2nd. I just think that I'll be more calm with him in there, and he can also hold me tight enough so I don't jerk around or move in any way. Last thing I want is for me to move, making the anesthesiologist miss or something.
:O
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
I know you said not to say this but TURN OFF THAT TV. I spent all my time reading positive birth stories online.. I searched out the kind of thing I wanted to hear and would not listen to anyone else. I had a home birth, and went into it fully educated.. I learned about and acknowledged the things that could go wrong and then decided to pay attention to the fact that it would go RIGHT. Obviously I'm not telling you to have a homebirth.. but get some positive vibes going!!!!! The biggest hindrance to birth is fear, period. If your mind is not in the right place there is no way your body can do what it is supposed to do! <hug> Your body is totally mean to be able to do this so stop letting yourself be influenced by the fear mongering that is the media (and yes, the medical system). EFT (www.emofree.com) and positive affirmations were also helpful to me. I used them in the birth and it was very fast and easy (for a birth lol 2.5 hours total) and non medicated.

Cool beans!!
I'm doing a homebirth this time, as well! I'm so excited!!
Re: Damn You, Discovery Health Channel!
Dammit Rhi, stop watching that shit. There is plenty of other morbid shit out there that doesn't involve c-sections or babies :D
