Well I'm on year 6 now. Never had a plan on how long I would dance, still dont. I will stop when my body is ready to.
I havn't read the whole thread yet. I originally started to just do Indy or "a couple of months"... I liked it so much I have just kept going. I am now shifting into private party work to be able to open up more avenues for me in the end (so I can possibly do burlesque and eventually have the time to devote to any businesses I buy as well).
I started on the night of the Sept. 11 attacks (it was Sept. 12 for us in Australia when it happened).... havn't stopped since.
My aim is to exit at 35 years of age. Have a few animal-orientated/related businesses that provide me income so I can quit without loss of "lifestyle" as such. I like running my own business... being my own boss. I've always wanted to own a vet, a pet store and one or two other animal/pet related businesses.
I am also hoping that I will also have $10,000 sitting pretty in a term deposit account (my rainy day fund)... and enough money to be able to invest off-shore and in property. Not really big on shares tho' I may invest in a few mutual funds eventually.
Age 35... that's my aim. Granted, it isn't set in stone (I'm allowing for the unpredictability of life)... I'm going 28 next month.
I planned on it being less then a year.. well im coming up on a year now. As much as I hate it i'll probably keep with it. I enjoy being on stage, I enjoy dressing up and I enjoy traveling and all that stuff. As long as I dont have to sell private shows/dances I love it. So who knows.. i'll probably be at least a part time lifer.
I've been dancing for less than 2 months so far, but feel pretty confident that I want to continue well into my 30's (I'm 25 now). I already have a college degree, car, 9-5 job, health insurance and a savings account... so my goal is to work 2-3 nights a week and squirrel everything I make away into savings. My savings goal is a minimum 20k a year after taxes, and all that money goes into a high interest savings account. Hopefully my body will continue to put up with the 60+ hour work weeks - cause I want to own a house by the time I'm 30!
Thank goodness for SW :)

I already said I was gonna retire at 28. And I did. But now I am getting ready to come back at 29. I already paid for my education, bought a condo, and paid for many cars that I crashed and burned. But I want to go back to nursing school. Someone else here said they were going to do nursing school, too. I have almost drained my savings and am ready to put more cash in the kitty. When I stopped dancing, I started my own business and it did not turn out as expected. It has drained me financially. I am thinking that I should keep my business as a part time venture and secure a more reliable nursing degree. So, I guess, I could be here another 5 years. If I take care of my body, I think I can get away with it until 35! Plus I am all the wiser now, don't do drugs, and don't crash cars anymore!!!
I started dancing to simply get myself out of debt, support myself, and pay for college. I met a lot of my goals, including finishing my degree last year. For me, dancing has served as a fun way to pay the bills a lot quicker than the min wage jobs I held before. Now that I am done school and working other non-dancing jobs, I am seriously looking for a way to exit from dancing within the next half year or so. I should be getting my insurance license sometime this fall or winter, so hopefully the hours at the insurance office will increase and so will my opportunities in that field. Plus, to be honest I've been getting very burned out from dancing to the point that I've started fantasizing about how I'd like to beat up the assholes who try to touch me in forbidden spots LOL(NOTE TO SELF: This is not healthy! :D) I'm not going to swear off dancing past half a year from now, but hopefully I will be far enough on my career track that I will be able to support myself on non-dancing income and then dancing money won't be a "necessity" like it is for me today. Now that the "newness" of dancing has worn off, it just doesn't feel as fun as it used to and I'm suffering from major burn-out. On the other hand though, I'd always intended for it to be a temporary thing and I am surprised that I've lasted a year and a half at it(which is a lot shorter of time than most of the dancers on this site).
Just as an addition to my earlier post: I am finding that working in clubs where the customer cannot touch you as well as doing private parties is definately helping me be in it for the long haul. I don't think I would have been able to really last if I had continued to work in the strip clubs locally more full time like I used to do. I did that for just over three years ... glad I only work in the local scene every so often (in re: strip clubs).
I have total control when it comes to the private parties. If I don't want them to touch me, then they can't touch me. My security makes sure that any touching is consentual.
I started dancing 9 months ago, and I'm planning on dancing for one more year, until I return to school. I only started dancing when I was done with my Bachelor's. I like it a lot, but if I'm in law school I don't want to accidentally run into classmates/professors. Maybe if I can find a club outside of whatever city I'm in, I'll keep dancing on the weekends. Definitely not full time though.
Me too!Quote:

I find that my psyche is very happy this way and I can work up to 6 days/week.
I feel as if I am in control and am respected. Going into work is a piece of cake and something I look forward to.
My goal is not to have to depend on dancing. I have my plan to open up a boutique and make some good investments. If I still enjoy dancing after I have met my goals and no longer depend on it I'll still do it to amuse myself whenever I feel like it.
Good for you!!!Quote:

Ideally, I would like to work only 2 nights a week during the school year, but as long as I can handle more, I will do the 4-5 nights a week until the hectic parts of the school year like finals and whatever.
