best way to sell a lot of stuff?
i've decided to sell a lot of my stuff and move back to la.
i'm wondering what the best/fastest way to do this is. ebay? thrift stores? yard sale? any other ideas?
i've got a lot of books, dvds and clothes to sell. a bit of furniture. and a ton horse stuff - saddles, bridles, etc.
i've also got a digital camera so i can take pictures of things to post.
what have you guys had the best experience with?
Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
It worked for us to have a big moving sale and whatever didn't sell there, was put on Ebay. Whatever didn't sell there we donated.

You know what I've been doing lately? Listing stuff that I wanted to get rid of (I've been nesting like a mofo), on the Garage Sale/Yard Sale sites in my area on Yahoo Groups. Everything sells too---And you don't have to worry about putting the stuff out in your yard for a big yard sale or anything. Just list it, and they start replying. You also don't have to worry about shipping or anything because they'll come to YOU.
Just do a search on Yahoo Groups for your area (or the biggest city/town closest to you). I'm sure they have either a Yard Sale or Garage Sale group (or both). Then join up, and start posting away.
If possible, bundle like-items together and set a good price. People love getting a deal on bundled stuff, of course.
There's also never a fee on those types of groups. No listing fee or anything. It's all free, and your money is yours from the sales. All the site does is provide an advertising spot.
Good luck!

Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
You're very welcome! I've been doing that for about 3 months or so now, and I can't even tell ya how much I've sold. LOL. My Husband is always worried about coming home and finding out what else I've sold. Haha.
Then of course, if you have actual "Junk" that you don't want to throw out, and you think someone can use, there's always Freecycle. Lots of people willing to come and take your junk off your hands (for free, of course).

Hey, thanks, Rhi! I've never heard of this before. It seems like Ebay is oversaturated w/buyers.

Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
the order i do things in is
craigs list
yard sale
ebay
donate
craigslist and yardsales are free, ebay takes a big cut and even bigger if you use paypal.
Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
yeah, i'm trying to avoid the whole ebay thing.
one of the problems is that i have over 200 books that i'm selling (which makes me a bit sad, but it will be worth it) but used book stores will only buy so much and it's hard to list stuff like that on craigslist or yahoo. so i guess i'll have to have at least a bit of a yard sale too. unless i can find a Lot of used book stores...
Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
Donate the books to a worthy charity, or independent coffee shop. It can be your gift to the universe.
Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
i'll donate the ones i can't sell, but i'm not in a position to make quite that large of a gift to the universe right now if i can profit off of it instead. rent in la is pricey and this a last minute decision.
i will be donating a lot of clothes though...

I just sold a TON of my books on the Yard Sale site. The response was overwhelming! I listed prices separately, for each book, and I also gave a price for the whole bunch. Someone came that very day, and bought them ALL. They even paid more than I was asking, because I keep my books in perfect condition.
I also sold about 100 of my CDs. They were scratched up ones that I'd already made backup copies of. I listed them separately too, and left the option open for someone to take all of them, and offer a price. Ended up getting $45.00 for all of them, same day.
Stuff like that sells on the yahoo groups, big time.
Donating is nice, when you can do it. But, I've been selling to make a profit because with the baby coming, we'll need it.
Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
that is great to know Rhiannon - thanks so much!!
i listed a bunch of stuff today, but i'm waiting for a moderators approval. i hope there are a lot of horsey people around here because i have a ton of that stuff.
Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
You could try selling the books on Amazon.
I would also consider putting the books, clothes and DVDs together in bunches to sell on ebay. Those "wholesale lots" on ebay attract alot of bidders so that even after paying their fees it can really be worth it. It's also easier/cheaper to sell off a bunch of stuff that way instead of trying to list it all individually. Just make sure you weigh each package so you know how much to charge for shipping up front. Start the bids low, end them on a weekday (preferably early in the week) and watch the price go up. It's weird but auction buyers will not bid on something if you start it at a reasonable price, however if you set the price ridiculously low, they will bid like crazy on it and usually wind up going OVER what you would have tried to ask for it anyway :O
It wouldn't hurt to post links to whatever you're selling here, in case anyone is interested in what you have.
Put the furniture on craigslist for sure, with pics. Wouldn't hurt to put the horse stuff there too - it's free after all.
And try yahoo too like Rhi says - if it's free why the hell not?
Re: best way to sell a lot of stuff?
Heh.. Yeah, that's the only thing that bothers me a bit.. Waiting for them to get approved. But, luckily, I had one of the Moderators come over and buy our Playstation and all the games from us, and she said that she'll be pushing my stuff through right away from now on.. Haha.. She said she'll also shoot me an email before she puts good condition baby boy stuff up (approves them), so I'll have first dibs. It's great to have connections. Heh.
When you get to your new place, definitely sign up for the Freecycle for that area too. People are always giving away really good stuff. Some do give away junk, but for the most part, it's stuff that is practically brand-new (or in very good condition) that people just want to get rid of and out of the way. So, if you need any household stuff (even Furniture--I've given away 2 couches so far on Freecycle), always check there first. I do sell a lot on the other groups, but if I see that someone's in need, and it's something I have, I give it to them. Someone needed a toddler bed a couple of weeks ago because they had a house fire and lost everything. We're getting Delia a twin bed in a week or so (If we can ever convince her to sleep on her own that is.. heh), so I just gave the Toddler Bed away to that person.
