My shoulder is messed :(
So Sunday I thought I pulled something in my shoulder at work.. shrugged it off figured it was just a strained somethin.. went to work last night and at the end of my third show I was in tears running off the stage to the bathroom to be sick and I couldnt move my left arm at all. I went to the doc today and she tolled me I messed up the rotator cuff... im supposed to stay off work for at least a week and ice it and take anti imflamatories... Well that would be great except I have a booking in Thunder Bay next week and Winnipeg the week after.. I cant take a week off work :( Ugh I dunno what to do..

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Advil cold and sinus.
pain reliever and anti-inflamitory.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Im using extra strength advil gel tabs.
-
Re: My shoulder is messed :(
how about having your man massage your shoulder? the advil is a good idea... I'll talk to Ken when he comes home and see what he suggests... he's usually better than me at this things. My cure all is usually a joint, which I know you don't do.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Ice, and stop flipping yourself on the pole - that is, if you must work (and if you must, you must) go easy on it.

The anti-hystamine in the Cold & Sinus works to reduce swelling.
i used to use it for my back when it started cramping and throwing off a shitload of heat.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Don't worry- there is no need to do polework in TBay. And most of the clubs in Winnipeg don't have poles anyways!
Practice your free-standing-dancing, and don't use the shoulder. Ice it lots.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Good to know Scarlett :D I guess it gives me a chance to work on what I suck at the most.. floor work. Now to get that damn flexability i've been trying to get for so long..

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Ouch...hope it feels better soon! Take care of yourself...
And, that's a great siggy pic of you!!

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Any kind of Ibuprofen would be most effective for an anti-inflamatory and a pain reliever. I agree with your doctor though, try to stay out of work as much as you can, but keep the bookings. Just take it easy for a bit, or you could really hurt yourself and jeopordize your shoulder for a month or two. That is something you definitely do not want. Take care of yourself!

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Thanks VG :D
Yea im stoned on T3's right now lmao... the doctor did give me a script for Perks but I refuse to take them.. girls at work take em for recreational purposes and they scare me when they're on them... so umm i'll stick to advil and take the T3 when im in A LOT of pain. I couldnt handle the pain earlier so I took a T3 and i've been flying lmao.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Someone said having your man massage you. I'd not reccomend this. He's (probably) not a professional and could damage you more.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
I hope it gets better Cally. Go easy on it for sure. I don't do a damn thing on the pole...and I usually don't even do floorwork. If you're in Thunderbay next week, I will make your shows look GOOD no matter what! :)

If you really dont want chronic pain in your rotator cuff you better rest. But If you must is there a way you can put an less strenous act on. One that dose not require crazy movement with your rotator cuff. Or tell them due to health injuries you can not attend what you need to attemd.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
I tore something doing fly's a few years back and I got back to work before they predicted by taking 2-3 days off and not doing anything with my arm. Of course, that's because I was on the Tylenol 3's too, and it hurt to breathe. I would just rest it as much as possible so it can heal quickly.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
I presume you went to your general practitioner? Did he/she do x-rays or just ask symptoms and have you move your shoulder around?
-
Re: My shoulder is messed :(
I went to a walk in(I dont have a fam doc) and she moved it around n stuff and asked me a bunch of Q's.. I told her im an agressive pole dancer and stuff, she said she used to dance too :O Anyway she said that it feels/looks/sounds like a rotator cuff injury and to rest it and if it doesnt feel better in a week to go back and see her.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Ick! Did that happen the day you went in when you were scheduled off? That crap (getting hurt, etc ) happens to me all the time when I do to work when I am scheduled off.... I feel like Dante from Clerks, "I'm not EVEN SUPPOSED to be here TODAY! "

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
I would think if your shoulder is causing that much pain you should have x-rays. If you have insurance, look in your yellow pages and find a doc specializing in sports medicine or orthopedics.
If you don't have insurance, I would suggest going to a chiropractor. They not only deal with back problems but neck and shoulder too.
If it is something worse than a strain or pinched nerve, you could do permanent damage by putting additional physical stress on it and injuring again.
I hate walk-in clinics. They are a bunch of theives.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Im in Canada.. free health care :D You cant get xrays though unless they really think its necessary.
Yea Montana happend on the day I wasnt supposed to work :(

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
So they just gave you drugs and thats it? "wee hope you get better" - take care doctor?
-
Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Yea Scarlett I was shocked a doctor could admit she used to dance lol. It made it easier to explain to her how I did it. Its a bit better today.. still sore but what can ya do. My manager wants me to go in and do one show today... I told him i'll try, he said he wont expect much from me and I need the money so we'll see...

Kind of.. its a walk in clinic.. she moved it around some and looked at it. Gave me some drugs for the pain, told me to take it easy and ice it and she said if its not better in a week she'll send me for xrays and physio therapy.. I guess thats all you really can do. I mean my arm isnt hanging there helplessly.. I can still move it around it just hurts to move certian ways.

Re: My shoulder is messed :(
Man, that blows, Cally. Really hope it heals quickly. Everyone's giving great advice here! It's especially good that you're taking the anti-inflammatory kind of meds - this actually serves a healing purpose along with pain reduction, as opposed to just making it feel better without helping the situation. Just have to second this, though:

Lilith is absolutely right. There will be a time to get it massaged (and I'd also recommend going to a pro if you decide to get it worked on, at least at first), but now is not it. You're still in the acute phase, even if it's feeling better, thank goodness. During the acute phase, manual manipulation (even from a pro) is contraindicated.
I concur enthusiastically with all those who recommend vigilant icing! The anti-inflammatories are also key, but I have one other thing to say about that. It might sound odd or even cruel, but if you do decide to work (and my $0.02 would be to save yourself for those bookings and try to take the time off NOW from your home club) either at the home club or for the bookings that will be harder to get out of, DON'T take painkillers before you work if you can possibly stand it.
It is such a common pattern in many physically active professions, especially athletes/dancers, to mask the pain in order to get through an event. That's all you're doing, masking it. Unfortunately, this can lead to thinking that the injury is better than it is. You end up overusing it and doing thing you shouldn't be doing at all, and next thing you know, you've REinjured it, eliminating all the progress you made, back at square one - or worse, causing even more damage than before.
Pain sucks, but it's there for a reason. If you're getting ready to work, take meds only if it's intolerable otherwise. LISTEN to your pain. And by all means, load up on Advil afterwards! ;D And ICE, ICE baby!
P.S. I, too, love your new avatar pic! Wish there were a bigger version!
