This koala was rescued by Steve Irwin himself as well.
Awww lovely photos. I have never been there yet. My mum took my son there a year or so ago and Steve Irwin was there, so Im glad he had that experience.
I went there three times but never had any pictures scanned. I held a koala there too, though!
If you're ever down on the Gold Coast again, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is not to be missed.
Wait a minute.....are you guys telling me that you can pet the animals like that? Please explain this to me. Maybe it sounds stupid, but all my zoos are completely different. Even the petting zoos are not set up like that.
I'm very confuzzled.
Those are some beautiful animals, and I'm seriously jealous that you get to be so close to them and one on one!!!!!
At Australia zoo you can pet all the tame animals. Koalas, kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, even the kookaburras that can't fly because they were hit by cars.
Yes, at Currumbin Sanctuary the kangaroos and wallabies run wild (or hop - althoght they arn't very active generally) and you can hand feed them and pat them. I nearly died when my son was a toddler. He ran up to a big red male kangaroo which was lying in the grass. Big Reds are 6 feet when they stand upright and have bigger biceps than most men I know - and can kill an adult if push came to shove. And Tom ran up and sat on his back! The kangaroo just turned his head looked at him and then turned back and didnt pay him any more attention, lol.
I agree Currumbin Sanctuary rocks! I live just down the road, so if your coming down this way let me know (-:
I am so jealous. I wish I lived down under...
The pics are beautiful, lilith!
In order for us to realize the trouble and endangerment people are causing animals, he wanted people to be able to get a chance to know the animals up close and personal, which I think is a great idea (except for the crocs and such)! I heard him say that on larry king. He also talked about opening a zoo in las vegas! Damnit! that would have been soo awesome.Quote:

Tasmanian devils?! You couldn't pet them when I was there! Are you sure they are letting the tourists pet them now? Those little guys are MEAN! Nasty, angry little critters with strong jaws and sharp teeth. They can do a lot of damage. I happened across one in the wild once and it scared the shit out of me. They're really letting people pet them or is that an error?Quote:

I am going to try my darnest to make it up to the Zoo in the coming fortnight so I can pay my respects ... take photos of the many many tributes left for him out the front... and spend a day enjoying the Zoo as Steve would have wanted people to do so !! Plus I am helping Wildlife Warriors by keeping the Zoo going since the Zoo takes care of all the administrative costs of running the non-profit organisation.
I never made it up to the Zoo as it was always seemed so far away from me... and seriously the thought that Steve would die before I would be able to maybe see him LIVE there at the Zoo never ever entered my consciousness/mind.... so I will visit it now as my way to pay my respects.
So...... I'm willing to pick people up on the way as I do have a car if the other people are willing to chip in for fuel ;D Naturally, everyone pays for themselves to enter the park and purchasing anything whilst there from food and drink to merchandise...
Q: do they allow you to BYO food and drink?
Who's up for it ? I'm wanting to do it on a Sunday or Monday, if possible. Depends if everyone would like a full day or half day out to the Zoo.

Like next week? I wont know if Im free until Wed, but if i am and theres room, I'd love to come!
Wouldn't the profits from the food and drink sales go to the upkeep of the zoo though, GCG?
Wow, you're beautiful, Lilith. Your pics are great too. I am so jealous; if only I wasn't on the other side of the world. Thanks for sharing.
Krystal
Yes. Yet I have absolutely no problem with that for without the zoo the Wildlife Warriors Worldwide non-profit that they set up would have to waste donations upon administration of the non-profit. Plus having that money go back into the zoo to help keep and maintain it as a prime 'tourist attraction' isn't that bad is it.... it will help spread the message Steve wanted spread as well as keep people in employment doing what they love to do (as I doubt he hired anyone who did NOT want to work there - he most likely surrounded himself with like minded individuals).Quote:

I wanna go. :)
As per the Steve Irwin thread in The Lounge - I am going to TRY to make a trip of it tomorrow. I said try. You'll find out whether I did go or not sooner or later. lol. It's just more convienant as I will already be on the Sunshine Coast doing promo... and then it's only half an hour away compared to two hours away from the Gold Coast.
Woah!! I was there when I was in sixth grade! Memories... too bad my mom went nuts and destroyed all the photos. >=[
