Instant messaging thoughts...
A curiosity.
Instant messaging, we all use it to some extent I would wager.
Now for the past few days I've had all of the following on my system in some capicity:
ICQ
AIM
Yahoo
MSN
Rendezvous (from trillian, otherwise I don't know how it got there)
If you count Trillian as an IM program it too is on my system. I tend to regard it as the master ring that binds them all. If you can get it setup, it is worthy.
Now, back in the day when IMs were young, it seemed that everyone had ICQ. I can't imagine the amount of actual contacts I had on ICQ at one point, and these were people I conversed with on a regualr basis.
There were quite a few programs back then, Pow Wow comes to mind. But they all seem to be lost now.
Now at somepoint AOL bought out ICQ and Microsoft put that nasty bastard of a firewall into its os. Thus killing the average user sharing files on ICQ. AOL, of course took the thunder away from ICQs wings.
Fast forward to today... I have two active contact on ICQ, about 10 on MSN, and a few elsewhere.
Now I have seen the new ICQ client, and find it annoying. It is pushy (always on at startup etc) and the adds are taking it over. However I have found one thing I like about it, you can still send a message to someone, weather or not they are online. All the others do not seem to do this. With ICQ, you can pass that odd random thought, or note of encouragement to a friend, anytime you want.
Don't mind me just some odd random thoughts.
So what IM stuff do you like and why?
Re: Instant messaging thoughts...
I use different IMs for different stuff.
I have AIM for my school (online- we're required) and to talk to family that still has AOL.
I use Yahoo and MSN for personal conversations, but I havne't logged onto either lately.
I never really liked ICQ. :P
Re: Instant messaging thoughts...
You can send offline messages on yahoo
Re: Instant messaging thoughts...
I only have MSN and I never have it on. I am kinda over IM chat. That and I'm usually doing multiple things whilst online (multi-tasking) that I find IM chat irrating... a disturbance and time waster. I rather have stripperweb suck my time out of me... lol!
Re: Instant messaging thoughts...
IM proggys drive me nuts. I log onto msn and i'm bull rushed. I stay on 'appear offline' unless someone i actually want to talk to is on. 99% of the time i leave it in the drink.
'cept for when i'm hounding GCG for her msn info, that is... :)
Re: Instant messaging thoughts...
I have AIM . but i have nobody on my buddy list. :(
Re: Instant messaging thoughts...
I use MSN but most of the time I'm "appear offline" because I don't like IM'ing. I am usually busy with things when online and don't have the time for mindless chatter. Occasionally I don't mind chatting for a bit but mostly I just can't be bothered with it when I'm trying to work on websites or do other things. I give out my MSN address to very, very few people. The only people I approve are people who I know won't annoy me lol.
I used to use Yahoo! messenger when I was an avid user of the Yahoo! chat rooms... but that was many, many years ago.
I used to use ICQ, back in the day, and I'm pretty sure I still have an ICQ number that's only like 7 or 8 digits - one of the really old skool ones lol. Remember that "UH OH" sound it'd make when you got a message? Haha that was so annoying.
I have never once downloaded or used AIM.

-Oh so telling Darcy, now we know your on AIM!!! lol :D We know your going to be the Queenpin of pornsites one day. }:D
Yeah the uh oh is annoying. I changed it around a few times. Yep I have 8 digits, my friend signed up 4 hours before me and has 6. That is how popular it used to be.
You can of course ignore or turn of your IM software when you have better things to do. Trillian is nice, turn it to away, or a particular setting and it does not bug you at all.
On a side note, I just hooked up with skype so I could get my son to video chat with the ondai ondai girls. and I'm getting invites from the most intersting people.... lol. Like I was saying to someone else I wonder where that is going to lead. In most of my profiles I have very few details about myself... so I often get a laugh about some of the people that try and contact me.
I used to have many more details in ICQ... then I let this one person join my list.... suffice to say they are on ignore, and if I could do it perma ban. They rarely talked about anything and sent me too much shit... like pass this on or else crap. Yeah sure cute cuddly message, then a gun to your head... I did have some fun first though. I kept sending them to the Spam Masacre page, Snopes and other the Minasi anti-bs page.
I'd say I use IMs to contact mostly people I actually know, but can't really phone. Pity they were not more sophisicated. I could run a tech support business out of it. Mix an IM client with skype, and logmein.com... now that would be nice.

That is the best thing about yahoo...too bad not alot of my friends have yahoo. I don't know why the other instant messengers have that option. :O
Re: Instant messaging thoughts...
i had yahoo and msn but canned them both. IM shits me to tears. i didn't like the instant reaming of my computer security that occurred every friggin' time.
screw them all, i say. :neener:
