free portfolio...?
Hello! so i went into this 'lingerie shop' the other day to look for some fishnets and clear heels(for a pageant). the guy who worked in there was very nice/friendly and said if i was a model. and of course, im not a officaly a model yet, but trying. i have been meaning to get a portfolio done. he said he does those at the store(there was a big camera and light, and baige background thing[like those things they have in the background when you take school pictures] ). he said he takes pictures of some girls for ads for the store, and also if they want a portfolio done. he said he could do it for me for free.
that would be wonderful, but how can i find out if the pictures are just going to be for ME? i dont want him to keep them or have the rights for them and then make money off of them!
thanks!

Re: free portfolio...?
Just make sure that you have him provide a model release form that indicates the photos are for your use only. If it states that he has any rights to the photos then you can expect them to end up anywhere. Be sure to read the release BEFORE allowing any photos to be taken. If needed have someone else (a friend, lawyer, etc) read the release over as well just to make sure that you did not miss anything. Sign it only when totally sure and comfortable......
Good luck!!!

Re: free portfolio...?
Okay: if you're trying to be a model your photos are a good investment. Just pay for them. Don't start involving yourself with flirting with skeevy guys with cameras for free photos. I get that wasn't your plan when you went in, but you don't even know this guy and he is not likely trying to do you a favour (people don't tend to do strangers expensive favours). If he were "for reals" he would not be doing free photos for pretty girls, because he does photos of pretty girls all the time. Just my take. Pay for them. It's worth it.

Re: free portfolio...?
i would say bring your own release form stating that you are the sole owner of the photographs. As a photographer mself portfolios arent cheap to do (well properly that is)and if modelling is a real career goal for you research photographers and find someone you like to do a good shoot and yes pay for it you get what you pay for in most cases. No point doing it for free with buddy if it turns out completly un useable. after being in the industry for a while ive found there are alot of shady photogs out there that are ruining the industry by causing mistrust in alot of women who have had bad expriences and relay there bad times with aspiring models.
really what im trying to say is becarefull you dont want a bad experince to begin your career and photos can make or break your modelling career before you even start. so do your reasearch and good luck, and yes as stated make sure you read release forms before sighning them trust me on that one.

Re: free portfolio...?
well, you never said that he told you he wouldn't be using them. Usually when a photographer does pictures for free it's so that he/she can keep copies for their own portfolios ("tfcd" and/or "tfp", something like that). It would surprise me if he actually planned on not using them and doing shots for nothing in return. If he does offer to do them and not use them make sure you take the advice mentioned about release forms, that's the only way you'll have a chance at owning the shots.

Re: free portfolio...?
(It's too bad there's no "International Sign For Jerkoff" smiley :P). I'm not being rude to you, just been there done that. He will use the pictures for his own profit or least jerkin' off. Nothing is free hun. He saw a pretty young girl and thought, Hmm, I bet she'll fall for this "free" portfolio thing.
You should try to compromise with a photog, like, pay him for time & have him sign a waiver on using the pics for himself. (The law states the photographer has the copyright.)
PS Be careful with your portfolio once you have it (make copies of fave pics), theft happens too.
