Re: elderly driver convicted
I was in the grocery lot parking lot and was over half way finished walked across the street (you know the little street that separates the store from the parking lot?) this old lady was on one of the aisles waiting to turn, and she was stopped. and then started going towards me when I was 3/4 across the street. I kind of jumped and she stopped, and I thought to myself, they need the videos of when Old Drivers Attack!
Re: elderly driver convicted
As a recent elderly driver accident victim myself, I can say the system tries to gloss over these incidents way too often. The 76-year old woman that plowed into four of us at 60MPH down the wrong side the road through two red lights of a major intersection in Boston had had previous incidents on her record, and yet she was still driving.
Re: elderly driver convicted
They keep making the laws tighter for teenagers to get their liscence, yet they do nothing about the elderly keeping theirs. Yearly eye exams and driving test should be mandatory over a certian age.
Re: elderly driver convicted
Hallelujah pass the peas! When I was still living on Long Island, I was hit by an elderly driver. I was crossing Sunrise Highway to go to work, I walked to work back then, and the dude hit me IN THE FACE with one of these:

He was 77.
Re: elderly driver convicted
In our family we have had to step-up twice in the last 4yrs and take the driving priviledge away from my Grandparents . Its tough to do but the right thing, a moving 2k piece of metal is a dangerous weapon when in the wrong hands . But on the flip side of this debate should a license not be issued to a teen driver because of the immaturity factor ? Its a tough call on either side of the spectrum but it seems to come down to a family responsibility , you cant expect our system to be able to take care of this problem , you know how long the DMV lines are now .
Re: elderly driver convicted
i think the elderly people shouldn't have a liscense after 65 years old.

I think the answer could be a far more ridgid and comprehensive driving and sensory tests for people over 65, one that is required to be administered frequently.
I know of a 79 year old man who still has, in my opinion, good driving skills and faculties, and is not a danger to anyone because of his age - yet. Taking a liscence away from him now would be an injustice.
However, once a person reaches those years, they can suddenly deteriorate rapidly. You may have all your faculties one year, and 6 months later you can be unfit and unsafe for everyone. Or, you can be fine for a number of years more, with a gradual slide. Thats why frequently, comprehensive tests should be the norm.
And, of course, to impliment and administer all of that, and set it as a matter of law, would cost more taxpayers money. We know what that aspect does to plans.

Blame the AARP. They vote often and they vote as a block. There's no way we could get a bill passed that would require them to be retested; anyone supporting it would lose their constituents. Damn the AARP. They're too powerful. >:(
