Went for amateur night, left with a job.
I've always wanted dance on a strip club stage, so I decided to go to my not-so-local club's amateur night. And then they offered me a job and wanted me to work that night. So I did. I only made $70 after the (reduced) house fee and tip outs (fortunately, I've been lurking here for a while so I at least knew some stuff about the buisness), so I don't know if I'm really cut out for this. It seemed like 14 out of 15 people that I approached to ask for a dance didn't want one. The constant rejection was a little depressing.
I have a day job which I really love and definitely will keep, but I figure I could try doing this to make some extra cash on the weekends - if I can get better at this.
A few questions:
1) I'm working tonight, so I need an outfit! Does anyone know a good store in Manhattan?
2) If you start a lap dance in the middle of a song, how do you know how long to go? Or are you supposed to wait until the begining of a song?
3) Should I get the money at the begining or the end? I ask because this one guy who I gave a dance to told me at the end that he had told me that he didn't wanted a "full dance" and I didn't want to start anything being new and all I figured I misheard him (the music is so loud - I can barely hold a two minute conversation with anyone) and I did make some money since he had been putting dollars in my g. But anyway, should I get the money up front, or will that prevent me from getting multiples? Or should I just tell them how much it is up front. You would think that SC patrons would know how things work there already. Or was someone just trying to take advantage of the newbie?
Okay, now I'm rambling, so I'm gonna stop. Any help you could give me would be great.

1) Can't help ya. I shop online.
2) I wait until the beginning. Then no one gets cheated.
3) I get the money at the end. Easier the get multiple that way. Creates more of a fantasy. And, yes, the guy took advantage of you. I would have demanded the money. Who the hell gets a partial dance? The world's fastest premature ejaculator? Loser.
Oh, and go read Hustle Hut. A lot. That's the best advice a newb can get.

You can get costumes and gowns at the shops on 4th street just west of 6th avenue. It's not the cheapest way but it's quick. Birthday Suit 163 West 4th St. near 6th Ave 212-206-7335
Tic Tac Toe 161 West 4th St. 212-462-0019
Shoes: Village Leather Inc 355 6th Ave near 4th St. 212-352-3105 Stripper shoes are in the back.
I'm sure it seems weird that I have all this info, but I teach burlesque and a lot of times the students want to know where to get modern gear.
And yeah, there's no such thing as half a dance. And yes, you get paid at the end. If they say yes chat a bit ("I just saw a great movie," something pretty impersonal but friendly like that), get in their physical space (so they don't change their minds) and just sort of sway until the next song starts.
But don't do ten dances and then try to get paid. Guys will totally get a bunch of dances and then argue about how many you did or what you said the price was, etc. I'd ask after two or three.

You did better than me my first night! I made all of 50 bucks and didn't go up to ANYONE the entire time - not a single person. That's how nervous I was. Major kudos to you for actually going up to all those people your very first night. It gets better. ;)

Agreed with the previous post, 6th ave and 4th street are your best options for dancer clothes - they're NOT cheap, but there's a huge selection at each one and all the stores are easily accessible. I get most of my stuff from Tic Tac Toe.

If you start a dance in the middle of the song because you don't want to waste time waiting, tell the guy upfront, "Since it's the middle of the song I'm going to start now and keep going until the middle of the next song, if you don't mind." Some guys won't, some would rather wait for the next song...no biggie either way.

I think the guy was just trying to take advantage of you...most of the time I collect money at the end and I remind them of the total...sometimes the guys automatically give the money upfront, which is great, but let's say if he's getting multiple dances, you don't want to break the "flow" by collecting money in between each dance - it tends to kill the mood and they're less inclined to buy more dances. Then again, it could also depend on the club and how good the bouncers/hosts are about making sure the girl gets paid her money. Just feel it out and you'll know...or watch what some of the other girls (that have been there a while) do. :)

Re: Went for amateur night, left with a job.
If I got to a dance area in the middle of a song, I would usually go ahead and start (slowly)What is an extra minute or minute and a half?. Then consider the beginning of the next song the real Start Point. It gives the customer a feeling of getting an added bonus (20% more for the same price). If you do several songs, help him keep track without being obvious.
I wait until we are finished to get my money. If you are to eager to get it you'll seem to the customer like you're in a hurry to just get his money. It's all about creating the fantacy and the illusion that you are into him, not just his money, that will get you more dances from him.
