Skin "imperfections" (moles,birthmarks,etc)?
Whats up guys, i just got a haircut today at a place called IjoySpa. I took one of their brochures on they way out, they do nails/hair/facials/etc. I saw in the skin care section, "mole removal" . Anyone who has gone to a spa and had this done, what is involved? does it hurt? what does the area (where the mole used to be) look like when their done? Possible scar? Feedback would be appreciated, thanks
Jeremiah

I don't know about "cosmetic" mole removal, but when I was 13 or 14 I had 9 moles on my neck and back removed with liquid nitrogen because I have a family history of skin cancer/melanoma. Doesn't hurt too much, feels like a hampster biting you. All of them healed perfectly, no scars, except one on my chest, which I had the dermatologist treat a few years later.. it looks okay.. not so noticable, but I can see it. I suppose that wouldn't happen at a spa unless you are really prone to scarring.

I didn't know they did this stuff at spas. Don't you need a medical license or something? Then again I've never had anything removed so I don't know how involved the process is, but it would kind of give me the creeps getting it done at a spa. Then again if it's a fancy one maybe I would.
I won't even let the chicks at the nail places do my eyebrows.

I don't think you should be getting something like this done at a spa. Not at all. And, I had a mole removed from the back of my leg ( I kept accidently shaving it off when I'd shave my legs) and my doc saw it and told me that doing that repeatedly could cause the cells to mutate when they are growing back, and become cancerous. The way I remember it, the removal didn't hurt at all...... but the shot she injected beforehand burned soooo bad. But really that only lasted like 3 seconds. Have an md do it... that is your skin, don't trust it to just any old place with an advertisement.

Have an MD remove them. If they are funny looking (the moles, not the MD), they need to be sent to pathology to check for abnormal or malignant cells.
Re: Skin "imperfections" (moles,birthmarks,etc)?
Okay, so, I love my face (not to toot my own horn), I'm just okay with it - BUT, the one thing I can't stand is this circle which is a little darker than my face. A few years ago it literally just started growing and at first they just froze it off like a wart. Well, when I found a GOOD dermatologist she took a biopsy and it turned out to be a epidermal neevus (and overgrowth of the top layer of skin).
Unfortunately I've had it frozen off so many times and it keeps coming back so I have to go to a plastic surgeon to get him to cut it out (stiches and all, right under my fn eyeball!) so I'll have a line scar...which to me won't be as bad a dime size spot on my face, and sure as hell easier to cover up with make up (most people don't notice it now but it makes me slightly self consious).
I'm thinking mederma for a few years and the scar won't be too bad either. I think moles or other skin problems should always be dealt with by GOOD doctors.

I had a SMALL mole (more like a slightly raised dark freckle) on my lower back that was removed by my derm and sent off for a biopsy. This was over 15 years ago and I *still* have the crater scar (which incidentally the scar is at least four times larger than the mole was) The scar has faded considerably but is definately still noticeable.
