I noticed that when I was in Philly about 6 months ago...I figured it was a regional thing.
it's in michigan also.
I had an older, veteran dancer in the club ream me for calling her "mami". She felt insulted like I was calling attention to her age or something. Of course, I didn't mean it that way. It's just like saying "Hey sweetie" but instead you say 'Hey mami". No big deal, right?
For people that don't know where this came from, it can be quite confusing and they think -- why are you calling me "mama," but for the rest of us we understand that when you say "what's up" it doesn't literally mean that. Or how about Paris Hilton using the B word to say hi to Nicole. It's not intended as an insult it's just another way of saying HI.
Indiana, too. Isn't it funny how trends sweep through the clubs? Remember the legwarmers? I hae a theory that dancers from most areas of the country converge in Vegas and bring these things back to their sleepy little burgs.
actually, the legwarmers are huge in my club right now :DQuote:

ugh, legwarmers...
And I don't like "mama" or "mami". I don't like how the girls call the housemom "mom" either. Yous houdl only call one person that.
i love my legwarmers. you will have to pry them from my cold, dead hands.
It's in Atlanta too. Not by a lot of girls, just a couple and have not heard anyone call the housemom mom, they call her by her first name.
I'm 'mama' at work, here in Ohio.
Yeah, I don't mind when I'm called mama. I'm older than most of them, and the one they come to with problems, so it sort of fits anyway.
i've heard girls call each other that but i wasn't aware it was a stripper thing. i've heard girls outside of the industry call each other that too. when a girl called me that i was like "i'm not your mom" and she just laughed.
I call ppl mami or mama, its just something I heard often growing up in a heavily hispanic area.
I'm in VA and the Latino guys call me "mami" and I look like I'm 17. So I don't think it's an age thing.
You know that song, "muevete, muevete, muevete, maaaami." That's my only guess.
Me too. I say it and don't even realize it. I'm really picking up on my language habits now that I'm moving from South TX. People ask me where my accent is from, and I don't even speak that much Spanish.Quote:

Mami is a latin thing. EVERY latin guy calls girls mami - hell the girls call each other that. I'm betting mama is just the english version.
Yep. I think it stems from 'mamacita'.Quote:

I get it at my club all the time in California, but I hear dancers calling customers "daddy" more often, which is worse. Girls should realize that a lot of these guys actually do have daughters, and by calling them "daddy", they just made them think about....well, you know.
All the girls at my club call each other "hon" or "sweety" and its always in that I-am-acting-nice-but-I-really-wanna-slit-your-throat kinda way...haha they dont call me that though, Im a hardcore bitch! haha
It's a Hispanic thing that's crossing over into the rest of American society. I was never called "mama" until I moved to L.A., and now I get it a lot. What really creeps me out is when the customers and other guys do it. I used to work with a caterer on one show that had a crush on me, and every day he would give me this big leer and say, "Hey, mommy!" :P
yeah like Bitch which is the nickname supreme at my club.Quote:
