Greatest Pop Songs of all time
OK..I am bored, so I decided to make a CD. I wanted it to contain my view of "The Greatest Oldie Pop Songs of All Time." I started with these Rules...(You know I gotta have rules. ;D ):
1) One Song Per Artist
2) Must have been recorded and released before the previous decade (i.e. 1989 or earlier)
3) Song must elicit an emotional reaction from me (has to make me feel good/bad/something. i.e. No Madonna.)
4) Song cannot be clearly genre'd. (No Rap, No Country, No Blues, No hard Rock. This is about "Pop" music.) This is a tough one...because the lines can be blurry between Pop and other genres..like Pop and Disco in the 70s or Pop and Rap now.
5) Songs will be ranked based on my enjoyment of them.
So, I started the list and I can't complete the CD. I have 18 songs and I can't find any more that I feel fit. So I am looking for suggestions...
This is what I have so far.
1. American Pie by Don Maclean
2. Piano Man by Billy Joel
3. (Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding
4. I didn't Mean to Turn you On by Robert Palmer
5. She Blinded me with Science by Thomas Dolby
6. That's All by Genesis
7. Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry
8. Wanna be startin' somethin' by Michael Jackson
9. When Smokey Sings by ABC
10. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
11. Twist and Shout by the Beatles
12. Brick House by The Commodores
13. Play that Funky Music by Wild Cherry
14. Superfreak by Rick James
15. Let's Get it On by Marvin Gaye
16. (You can) Call me Al by Paul Simon
17. I won't back down by Tom Petty
18. Life is a Highway by Tom Cochrane (Recorded after 1989)
I need 4-6 more songs and I feel like Elvis should be in there Somewhere.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Re: Greatest Pop Songs of all time
Hey sexy! I found a great list...try some of these on for size.
Some of the ones you already have are on there, so this should be right up your alley.
Have fun...sounds like you're making "The Soundtrack Of My Life". I love CD's like that and have made quite a few myself. They're especially good for long driving trips.
Re: Greatest Pop Songs of all time
whip it?, i feel for you, i think thats the name by shaka khan
Re: Greatest Pop Songs of all time
I think "Ain't Nobody" by Chaka Khan would go very nicely inbetween Rick James and Marvin. BTW, "When Smokey Sings" is an often overlooked pop gem. Kudos on that one, sir.

Damn Gen, you sir have excellent taste in music. For Elvis...I would use either In the Ghetto or Suspicious Minds, both songs leave a lump in my throat when I hear em.

I'll be there...looking at my tix as we speak. Also seeing them the next night at the Stone Pony.
BTW, saw them there last year I think, at the Troc. I loved that place. Didn't like having to stand on the street to wait in line (I am ALWAYS first in line when they play), but the inside of the place is great.
