BS!!! That is ridiculous that a columnist would write such garbage! I wish there was a way that I could contact the person with the question. I would definately advise he/she to inform his/her local police department.
It might be a hard case to prove. If other people other than the boss himself have access to the computer the child porn can be shown to not even be his. As the article mentioned that he could have aquired the photos freely. I mean there are people in the A&F catalogs that look younger than 18. A detective would first have to prove if the pictures in question are even of minors.
If the guy does report it he could very well lose his job either way. Its a tough gamble for someone when their sole source of income is the job he's at now.
Either way child porn is disgusting and one of the worst crimes to be convicted of is one with a child involved. As the other murders, rapists and maniacs will give him what he deserves in prison.
I worked for a national chain recognized name of computer stores. When there where systems returned that needed to be reloaded I would have to go through. I reported child pornography found on systems. This maybe happened once every two weeks. Way too frequent. I'd have to burn the contents and digitally lock the data and report every instance in blistering detail which wasn't so bad as 2 things:
1) The feeling I get when you see the first picture. Cause, it's never just one. And you think 'That's someone's baby'
2) Feeling like you're not helping. People pay me to go through rigorous reporting steps, yet people pay to see it. It's like it's funding itself.
*Sigh*
I would delete it with a note there saying "I found it."
Hence - the problem no longer exists and the dude would know he was busted.
Being self-destructive about it (ie, boss goes to jail - lose your job) doesn't help anyone over a bunch of bits and bytes when bills and rent are real.
These days unless there is full on penetration it is hard to prove it as child porn...
Pan Dah - I believe the US Supreme Court ruled virtual child porn is not child porn:
