I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I've been dancing since school started in September. They asked what I wanted my stage name to be.... I chose Annabella.... Well now I'm freekin so sick of it!
At my (very small) club theres already a...
Isabella
Bella
Annie
....Things get confusing.
Most of the well respected vet dancers go by their real names.... I'm starting to want to guy by mine..... Thing is my real name is very origional.... I mean I'm not listed anywhere (everythings under my mom and boyfriends names) but is it safe?
I really just want to go by my real name... I hate my stage name and I cant think of another one I want.
Besides my name being kind of origional are there others risks to having my real name? I doubt people would actually believe its my real name... LOL....
I would appreciate any imput... All I know is one girl at my club started with her real name and then went to a stage name after one of her dads coworkers came in.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
i don't think it's a good idea to go by your real name.
a stage name is like a protective barrier between you and this industry - a psychological barrier I mean. It's a way that u can distance yourself psychologically from all the crap that goes on at work.
i also worry that if you use your real name and later down the track u don't want to dance anymore that it could come back to haunt u. u might want to maintain some privacy in the future.
my real name would be a good name to use as well - its way sexier and cuter than my stage name but i would never use it coz when im at work i assume my stage persona and i like the distance that my stage name gives me from the patrons.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
You are walking through the mall with some friends or family one day and you hear your name being shouted across the food court. You look up and some sweaty, balding older man runs up to you "Hi! I knew it was you (insert name)! Remember me? We met the other night?" Mom begins to look scared, friends wonder who the hell you are seeing...and then you begin the awkward dance of trying to explain why you know the middle aged guy in the food court, bank, grocery store, mechanics office, etc. Can you deny you know him? Nope, he KNOWS YOUR NAME!
K, so it was a bit dramatic, but you get the point. I will never go by my real name because not everyone knows I dance and I do not want to have to EVER explain a situation like this...using a fake name.... "Uhm, no, I think you have the wrong person hun...sorry...(Insert icky go away face here)"
My .02 cents
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
Creepy! Do you REALLY want some icky guy moaning your REAL name while you're giving a dance? Why not try switching it to Annabelle? It's shorter and sounds less like the others you listed.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I'm actually a fan of using one's real name, but as a Christine, I can't say whether or not using such a unique name is a good idea.
Simple problem, I've nearly introduced myself as Christine at the club (d'oh!) or much worse, nearly introduced myself as Chloe to acquaintances/family friends/new dayjob coworkers (much more dangerous).
In the year that I've been dancing, I've had a few people recognize me outside the club, but nobody has ever tried to approach me.
I've shared sage nods with other dancers while in public, but that's all.
For me, the difference between my club self and my "normal" self is more than a name, and given as I already have my school "Christine," my family "Christine," my friends "Christine," and my out clubbing "Christine," adding one more to the mix isn't too big a deal.
If you're really worried about a customer approaching you while you're with people who aren't in the know, look flabberghasted and a little freaked should a customer ever approach you like above, explain something about him having stalked you when you were waitressing/bartending/working retail/whatever, and high-tail it out of there. Simple, believeable (since you are an attractive female), and makes whatever (s)he should say next much less likely to be believed.
Keep that reaction in store, then never have to use it, voila, your "secret" is safe.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
If you want to, knock yourself out.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I know a lot of girls who use their real names.... I wanted to but I enjoy wearing another name. I think I wear Ashley Tyler very well.. and its nice because when im not at work im <insert real name> who is very quiet, reserved, a tad shy and rather boring lol. When im at work im Ashley Tyler, an out going over opinionated, flirty, bitchy but cute and adorable and rather mischevious person.
Two names helps you seperate your work self from your real self. Try and think of something original and try it on to see if it fits you.
I went through a few different names before settling for Ashley Tyler, I was 'Shy', 'Shyanne', 'Amara' and then Ashley. The only reason I added the Tyler was because I started featuring.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I used my real name for a long time but my work has never been a secret either. Ive neverhad any hasstles with customers yelling out at me. I always say hello if i see them out in public anyway and usually customers wont believe its your real name anyway as most seem to think strippers use fake names (-:
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I've danced for 9 years under my real name and never had a problem. Some girls hav freaked out about it but I never give my last name to anyone and most guys don't believe me when I tell them that's my real name.
The choice is yours, do what you feel comfortable with.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I don't see a problem with using your real name. I dance under my real name and I've never had any problems. My real first name is a very common one, so it would be damn near impossible for some psycho stalker to try and track me down just based on my first name. I know several other dancers who have danced under their real names and nobody has had any problems.
Some girls like using a different name for their stage name because it helps create a new stripper persona. But do whatever you like.

Same here, danced under my name for most of my career- 10 years;
Ijust could never think of a name and then when I worked at a club where I couldn't use my name (either beause of rules or someone else was using it) I was stuck not able to come up with a name. The dj's had to name me (I ended up with Chanel, Sugar, Brie, Jewel, Kit, Princess and then forgot what my stage name as and wouldnt get to stage or respond to a customer::) ).
No one ever came up to me in public, never had a problem. Like you said, the guys usually didn't believe it was my real name anyway.;D
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I went by my real name for a year or so with no dramas.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I used a stage name for years but then became a manager where I had to use my real name for business purposes so the cat was outta the bag.
When I went back to dancing, I just stuck with my real name. No problems at all.
But I also didn't hide what I did either so, if you feel comfortable enough saying hi to me in public, then so am I.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
Knowing your name CG- I would have to agree that no one will think it's your name anyway. But the previous poster makes a good point. If you run into a custy at ds's school- it will be hard to pretend you don't know him when he's calling you by name. Or someone might hear it somewhere and remember you because it IS a unique name and memorable. I wouldn't do it, but to each her own.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I used my real name a few times when I was travelling about. It got annoying because you still get the "that's not your real name" bit. I did make a little money off it a few times. I would bet them $20 it was my real name, then show a mostly covered proof from my ID. I had a guy in MO once want to make a few guesses...I was going by a fake one then...and he guessed my uncommon real name on the first try. I couldn't believe it, but what I mostly couldn't believe is how irate he got when he didn't believe he'd actually guessed it. He called me a liar and told me to get the hell away from him!
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
I use my middle name for dancing. My problem with using my first name is that I really love it...and I know I would grow to HATE it if I heard it overused, screamed over the mic, moaned by nasty custys (as EE said), etc 4 nights a week in the club for the next four years.
I also love my middle name, but it hardly gets any use. So it's perfect for the club.
Plus, yeah, the whole thing about the stripper persona and getting into character.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
Why don't you just use your real name and then use a fake "real" name? Or pick a name similar to your real name.
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
Becoming Lola helps me get into work mode, which is a completely different person then I am in real life. if I went by my real name... I think it would somehow throw me off...
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
Ok. From day dot I have used my real name unless it is taken and then I use a derivative of it like Nessa, Nessie, Vanna ... only a few times have I not used my real name and regretted it.
It is ONLY your first name. Plus alot of guys don't believe you when you do confess it is your real name anyway. I can't tell you how many times guys re-ask the question "Nah.. c'mon.. what is your REAL name?" due to the disbelief.
I use a fake last name as part of my stage name yet the first half and most used part of my stage name is my real name. I just can't use any other name. It is me.
I say YAY as I worked locally for just over three years after growing up on the Gold Coast in the strip clubs using my real name with absolutely no problems. I still do use it and I have yet to encounter a problem other than someone else having my name.
;D
Re: I want to go by my real name. Yay or nay?
i use my real first name and an X as my last name, on the sites i model for (godsgirls.com, blueblood.com) as well as the clubs i work at. no one thinks it's my real name, it's pretty plain and VERY common... you'd have a hard time finding me in the phone book (if i was in the phone book) with only that to go by. if your name is something out of the ordinary, a stage name is the way to go.
