Stress/Major Weight Problems
Ok so about 1 1/2 weeks ago I lost my appetite. I don't mean I didn't eat as much as normal as wasn't as hungry, I lost it ENTIRELY. No stomach sensations whatsoever, hungry or full, just numb, you know the feeling, when you're not hungry or stuffed. I've been losing about an average of 1.5 pounds a day, and when I do attempt to make myself eat, it get physically sick, like I puke it up involuntarily. This is in no way an eating disorder. So I'm torn between puking everything up, or just forgetting to eat because when you're busy and you arn't reminded of the problem by being hungry you can easily forget. Has anyone experienced this for this long of a period of time or know what is really causing it? I've not eaten a lot when I've had major stresses before, but not to this degree. I'm alittle scared.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
That happened to me about a year ago, during a really hard time with my boyfriend. I didn't eat for about four weeks. I eventually ended up in the hospital, malnourished and severly dehydrated. I actually fucked up my heart because of it. I have a heart murmur now.
Try liquids. Don't eat, just drink. At least you'll get some calories and stay hydrated.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
Yes. Every time my husband deploys for a long period of time, I go through this for about a month. I usually will lose about 15 pounds (I'm thin as it is, I will go from 120 to 105, up to 110, down to 105 and so on)...
Our bodies do strange things during stressful periods. I know people who will eat non stop.. then there is me, who doesn't have an appetite. But, eat SOMETHING... buy a cereal you like and eat it dry so at least you are getting something.
Hang in there.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
I haven't really had that happen. Stress makes me want to eat. But I have a friend it happened to when she split with her husband. Just be sure you at least drink something so you don't get dehydrated. And maybe try to drink some ensure or something to get nutrients or at the very least take some vitamins.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
i've been like this lately. I went to my doc, he said to rest, drink fluids, and eat anything I can (w/ev craving) It's probably due to stress, like me.... Or grief. Is ths around the time of a loss? Take time for yourself, and be careful..... I'm scared about this as well, right now I'm at about 96, normal for me is 105ish... It's a big difference.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
Yeah I lost my brother alittle over 2 months ago and have been going through a lot of work stress.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
I'm so sorry... :grouphug: you need lots of these<<
:grouphug: You have a thread on this, right? Can't believe I forgot....
Losing someone is so difficult, espically when you're that close to them. You'll both be in my prayers. :grouphug: lotts of love your way, and go see your doctor, so you won't become malnourished. :grouphug:
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
:( :(
sorry to hear about your brother. i went through a similar stage when i lost my sister.
i also go through that sort of regularly with my "imaginary" stomach problems. i made it through by drinking lots of water, and living off boost (or other meal replacement drinks like that). i couldn't hold anything solid.. boost was the most i could take, but at least it gave me some nourishment so i didn't get myself into even worse condition. maybe try that? it should help and take one thing to worry about off your mind. :)
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
A woman I used to work with lost 50 pounds after her breakup. FIFTY. All because of depression. She was a little overweight, but she looked very thin. She was just catatonic...She stopped eating altogether for almost two months, except what her sister could force her to eat. It was very sad. If you don't feel better soon, maybe talk to someone.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
^^ That was me. I lost 35, but probably could only afford 5-10.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
a doctor could prescribe something. I know steriods increase your appetitte. I give prednisone to my ferrets when they are losing too much weight from illness.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
What about a little weed to prompt appetite?
In the midst of Winter Blues here, which is causing me to feel lethargic and not eat much. (Then again, I have another 10-15 to drop anyhow.)
I'm trying to keep the S.A.D. at bay with heaps of exercise and avoidance of booze. Oh, and weekly tanning.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
Stress can do alot of strange things to the body.
When I lost my grandma who raised me i stopped eating. I just didnt care about food anymore. Which was amazing for me because I was over weight at the time. I dropped weight like a rock. So fast people didnt know who I was. I started having problems achieving #2. I was nausated. The list goes on and on. I finally ended up in the hospital with my whole digestive track shut down.
Please go to a doctor and follow his/her advice. I went to doctors but i refused to see a therapist or even take meds. I ended up loosing a total of 100 pounds. I now live with constant symptoms from IBS, even though im alot better. I still have issues with my weight. But it has taken me years to get back to normal.
There are healthy ways to deal with stress and unhealthy.
Re: Stress/Major Weight Problems
I am sorry for your loss.
You should really see your doctor...losing that much weight per day is really traumatic to your body. It compromises your immune system, at the very least, and there can be other stuff going on that you don't feel and aren't aware of.
But I would be most concerned about the dehydration. If food is making you sick, I would stay away from rehydration drinks or other sweet stuff that has fructose, those sugars can be tough on a sensitive stomach. Try pedialyte or other rehydration drinks for infants/children---those are made for sensitive digestive systems.
