arabian/middle eastern theme music?
So...I finally decided to try doing a full feature show at my club. (yikes!)
The first set is going to be a Latin theme, and I've got the costumes, props and music for that. (using "amer sin ser amada" and "24,000 besos" by Thalia, and "no te preocupas por mi" by Cheyenne, just in case anyone else here is looking for some Latin theme music :) )
For the second set, I want to do an arabian nights/harem type set. Got the costume, props and contortion tricks ;) , but I need two more songs. First one is going to be the dance mix of Sarah Brightman's "Harem". Aside from that, I'm drawing a blank. I did a few searches on Limewire and found a lot of pure middle eastern music, but nothing that will work. The tricky thing is, in our club even for theme sets it has to be somewhat mainstream dance-type theme stuff. Straight-out middle eastern music most likely won't be approved.
If I get desperate, I might use the dance mix of "buttons" by the pussycat dolls; it's got arabian instrumentation and all, and would work...but that's not very original, esp. since everyone plays that all the time for normal stage sets.
Anyone have any suggestions?

"Lebanese Blonde" by Thievery Corporation.

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
There is plenty of "pop" and such music which has what I affectionately call a belly-dance "bent" to them.... some that I can think of off from the top of my head are Buttons by Pussycat Dolls, a song by The Prodigy (can't recall the name), Kiss Kiss by Holly Valance, BellyDancer by Akon and so forth.
Personally I was going to use a version of My Love is For Real by Paula Abdul which felt very sensual, erotic and belly-dance like as my first song and then a high energy/dance version of Desert Rose by Sting as my second song (I do veil dancing in the second song).... as I have a belly-dance outfit that I'm planning to use eventually in the competitions in 2007.

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
i'll check those out; thanks!

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
Wow I cant believe you mentioned the Paula Abdul song, i use that for alot of egyptian themed sets!!! Of course we are a Egypt Themed club to begin with so there are alot of those sets, The desert rose song is a very good idea too, i'll use that one :)

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
I still think "Lebanese Blonde" is your best bet, but I was listening to my iPod today and thought you might like "Pit Stop" by Lovage. It's got a very Middle Eastern feel but it's dancy and seductive too, and the lyrics are in English. I've danced to it before and I use a lot of bellydancing moves with it.

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
Too bad you just couldn't use some Khaled.. some really interesting music there.. from Algeria I think..
How about something from Massari? Rush the Floor maybe?

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
"Galvanize", by the Chemical Brothers, has a distinctive Middle eastern riff in the beginning which recurs throughout the song.
But it is very much a mainstream dance type song which should work almost anywhere, an excellent combination of techno and hip/hop which has an irresistable beat.
It's one of the hottest songs ever, in my opinion--though if as I heard they start playing it in stadiums during football games that'll ruin everything, lol...

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
^^^ Do you mean another song? There's nothing Middle Eastern in "Galvanize" as far as I can tell. And they do play it at football games and other sporting events.

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
Listen to the very beginning of it, there is a distinctive middle eastern riff, and it repeats during the song, though it is not as noticeable since the beat, etc, is quite powerful. One of the dancers at work asked for it as "the belly dancing song" (OK, her English isnt so good). I do use an extended remix but I think the intro is the same on the shorter version as well.
But it blows balls that they are butchering this great song by playing it at football type events, the swine. I ought to go once in a while so I am aware which songs they are destroying for club use. Nah, never mind--but I am so glad you told me, lol...
Thievery Corporation is great, BTW, I will definitely check out that song, too!

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
A couple songs vocalized by Melissa Kaplan (of Universal Hall Pass and formerly Splashdown). The first one's kinda quirky. The second is an exotic version of the Johnny Cash classic.
"Thunder" by Splashdown

"Ring of Fire" by Universal Hall Pass

Jesus H. Christ, that's one of my favorite songs, ever--I have to go get that remix right now, and thanks!
I used to play that as the 'the show's over, let's get the customers out the door' song, once in a while after the roughest nights, at the roughest club I have worked in. Plus I'm not a big ccountry music fan, but Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings I like.
Moments later--OK, this is a whole different order of song--but it's fucking great...
Also eminently suited to the theme.

Galvanize has a VERY famous and well-known classic egyptian riff in it.
Do does PussyCat Dolls "Buttons" FYI.
Try Oojami "Chicky"
I got really great response with Natacha Atlas's version of "I put a Spell on You". Its the only thing she's done that I like.
Also, Said Mrad has many great techno remixes of classic arabic songs

Check out "Move your Belly" off of his first 1001 Nights album
Here is a good mix of known artists with Mid. Eastern Rhythms to give you a sample:

Re: arabian/middle eastern theme music?
Oh, just re-read your post. If you want to keep it mainstream, "So Addictive" is awesome and a pretty popular song. Or, "The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove" which I've heard in most clubs I've worked and used myself for a while. Both good choices.

Try "One Night In Bangkok" by Murray Head or "Walk Like An Egyptian" by the Bangles.

I like Galactic Caravan. It's not mainstream music per say but very cool especially for you are looking for... you can find and burn their stuff on I-tunes too! One of my favorites songs from them is called Voice from the Moon
Another artist I like is Dinletir, one my favs from them is Ice Queen... also available on I-tunes.
Both of these songs are over 3 minutes but any DJ worth his salt can trim them down for you if you want them shorter.

Oooolala, I'm a huge fan. But I doubt it would go over well for a mainstream audience........
