Concerning the bird: how much research have you done on parrot ownership? Apparently it's a pretty big deal as I learned when looking into sun conures (which is actually a very small parrot) The greys can be pretty intimidating (I won't go near my uncle's greys) and rather tempermental with anybody other than their handler. They seem to bond to just one person (namely YOU) and can become quite neurotic if they don't have enough mental stimulation or human interaction. One of my uncle's greys plucks out his feathers.
Have you considered a rescue bird at all? At the very least, a parrot rescue facility might give you the opportunity to spend some hands on time with the greys so you can get a better idea of what it might be like living with one and the committment involved. Google African Grey Rescue and your city or state. You'll be surprised what pops up. L8
