I have IBS and occasionally, it will be days w/o a BM. Painful and bloated, yuck! I feel your pain. If it gets really bad, and diet doesn't help (roughage and LOTS of water), I choke down some water with Epsom salts in it. Tastes AWFUL, but works every time. DO NOT do this for the first time if you are going anywhere! First find out how your body reacts to it, and how long it takes - and only do it if you are REALLY constipated as, if you aren't, you may find yourself very uncomfortable for quite a while! The directions are on the container.

Good suggestions, and I've tried most of them. Most of the time they work, but other times things get sort of stuck. I really think it's a female thing.
I know lots of girlfriends who will say they only poo once every couple of days, but with guys they seem to do it on a regular basis (like the same time every day, twice a day). My husband is alarmed when I tell him I haven't gone in three days. I've always been that way though, so maybe that's just my normal.

I used to go every couple of days and then I changed my diet and I poop regularly now. It's high fiber, low-fat vegetarian.

Maybe the girls you hang out with aren't so healthy, and don't eat well. Modern medicine says it's normal to poo as little as 2-3x a week! Ewwww, think about how much you eat, and holding it in you for 3+ days..... Not healthy at all.... You should evaluate how you eat, perhaps you need to make some changes? I know that if I binge on junk, my system is off, but if I eat healthy and in moderation, it's at least 1 time a day, more likely 2-3. So, I go in a day as much as some people do in a week... sad.
On a wierd side note, do you have a place that triggers the need to go? For example, as crazy as it sounds, I CANNOT go into a library or bookstore without having to go #2 within minutes of walkng in. Seriously, it's wierd, but hey. Maybe if you have a "special place" like that, you could go there? I think mine stems from when I was little, I used to read in the bathroom, for as long as I could.....

Well, two of them are workout/fitness junkies, and I also fit into that category. I don't eat perfectly, but I do pretty well.
And I usually go at least every two days, but three has happened before. If "Modern medicine says it's normal to poo as little as 2-3x a week!" then what's the big deal?
And yeah, I don't like to go at work, but I will do it if I have to go. The opportunity might not present itself again. haha.;D

I'm into alternative health, so modern medicine isn't held in high regard with me, mostly. (But I love cosmetic!) To me, I thnik of it this way, most babies are born very healthy, and when they eat, they go. Cause and effect. It stands to reason that this should still apply when we age. So for me, when I eat a meal, I go. It just seems natural. But if you feel fine, you feel fine. If I went a day w/out going, I'd be worried, and I think I'd feel "full". When you recover from surgery, some people tend to have a problem going, and I did. 3 days, and I felt so sick!!! I can't imagine feeling like that often...

Long term things are slowly adding more fiber to your diet. Most people need about 25-28 gm of fiber in their diet each day. The laxatives will help just plan to be near a toilet the whole day.

I'm one of those who goes days (like 3 or 4) without pooping. I wish I had my Husband's ability. He goes about 2 or 3 times a day! I always joke with him and ask him why he even bothers to eat, because as soon as he's finished with the last bite of anything, he's in the bathroom getting rid of it.
I think my problem is that I don't eat enough fiber. For me at least, roughage causes gas more than the urge/need to poop. So, that doesn't work for me, and I have to watch the roughage intake anyway because it gives Hunter gas big time, and it's painful for him.

I have Ibs and have had it for years.
I do not take anything that is a stimulant ie laxative. If you take laxatives, depending on your sensitivity, it can cause more problems than it solves. If you haven't gone in a few days and your bloated there is a problem. You should be going at least once a day.
There are three things i do to make sure im going every day. One I drink alot of water, two i take enzymes, and three when im in trouble i take Metamucil.
Water is essential for so many reasons.
Everyone has enzymes in their stomach, intestines, and mouth. They help break down food. Sometimes we need more help breaking it down as we get older, if we are stressed, and/or if we are dieting. Taking additional enzymes helps you digest food faster. My big problems are steak and chocolate. Steak just sits in my gut and makes me bloated.
Lastly when I am in trouble I take Metamucil. Yeah yeah it sounds like old people stuff but it works! It is a soluble fiber you drink. It is natural, without a stimulant, and it wont give you the runs. It also doesn't give me gas!! There is also a product called benefiber you can sprinkle on food.

When I have trouble going, the first thing I do is drink water water water water water. And gatorade-type stuff so that it gets absorbed better. For me, the thing that's most likely the cause of me not pooping daily is dehydration. Keeping a water bottle next to me at all times seems to help a whole whole lot.
Other than that, the slow introduction of more fiber into the diet. Just adding a daily salad can do wonders. If you usually don't get a whole lot of fiber, adding a whole lot of psyllium husks or metamucil or whatever can really mess with your GI tract. The bottles usually stay to start off with just a little for the first couple of days -- they're right.
And yeah, when all else fails for me, coffee works wonders. Just remember that coffee is a diuretic and up your water intake accordingly.

Pooping is the way of life Cally lol...get out the bad put in the good. Btw, Andygirl drink ALOT of water while you are on laxatives. They can leave you dehydrated which will make you more constipated afterwards.

I find that a cup of hot coffee with milk or creamer will do it for me every time.
And if I can't get to hot coffee, then slamming about two bottles of cold water over five or ten minutes will do it too. It works in minutes and doesn't give you all that laxative discomfort.

That's good it doesn't give you gas, but Metamucil is know to give many people gas and bloating. Since I also have IBS, I would recommend Citrucel instead so you don't have to worry about the possibility of bloating with Metamucil.

If it's a constant problem, I'd suggest Zelnorm (it's prescription, but doctors will give it to you if you have the problem constantly). It's just for women with constipation-IBS. It is the ONLY thing that works for me (since too much insoluble fibre makes me shut down even more, and get all crampy- same with coffee, and omigod dairy- ouch). But IBS makes for some unusual digestion anyway. It does affect 10-20% of people though, and even more so women. Sooo, if it's an ongoing thing...
***my "BOO zelnorm" thread notwithstanding. Ahaha, it took a few days to get used to, but NOW it's definitely golden for me.

ITA about metamucil. I'm all about prodiem now. BTW (here's for some tmi, but we're talking poop, lol)- I've been so stuck that I took 3x the recommended exlax, and still nothing. For like eight days. It's hell. Hooray Zelnorm. Ha, and that's all I'll say, sorry.

I have never had problems with Metamucil. Then again IBS acts differant in each person too.
