another ? about self-tanning lotions
I read through most of the threads on recommended self-tanners...but I'm still hesitant to try using any of them b/c the last two times i did, it came off on my clothes and sheets. :'( >:( Even though I applied it in the morning, waited until it was dry and set in before putting on decent clothes, and waited over 10 hours before going to bed...what a mess. >:(
So the important question is...which self-tanning lotions will actually give a decent, even colour without staining everything? (and preferably without flaking off after 2 days--another complaint I had with the products I used!) Anything? Anyone?
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I shower before I go to sleep or put on anything nice. I wouldn't want to risk ruining things....
I like the neutragena brand tanners.

I did too (shower before bed, that is). A bunch of it came off in the shower, more came off on my towel...and then in my bed. Hence the >:( .
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
really? wow, I've never had that happen! What did you use?
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I use a self tanner that goes on like lotion looks like lotion. I really like it um lets see it is Vasaline. i still take a quick run through the shower before i go to work but its a small price to pay for looking tan. oh it doesn't seem to work well if your tanning in a bed.
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I'm curious what you used Picareque, sounds awful.
I have the Jergens lotions now. It's one of those "lotion" ones. The thing is, I never remember to use it every day, so it has done absolutely nothing for me the few times i've remembered to. I guess you have to use it really consistently or something.
I've used Clarins in the past and had really good luck. But it is spendy so next I'm gonna check out the neutrogena stuff. I'm thinking the foam one I saw...
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I never had a problem with the Neutrogena gel but I always applied Palmer's Cocoa Butter with vitamin E first and let it soak into my skin before applying tanner. Also, try to "pat dry" with the towel after bathing instead of rubbing/wiping the towel.
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
two things:
1) if you're letting it sink in during the day - have ugly 'tanning clothes', loose things that you don't care about the surface stuff getting on
2) buy 100% gay pyjamas from target for $10. i wear these buttoned up to the neck if i'm letting fake tan steep overnight. seems to work. mine have cowboy boots and 'yeeharrr' on them... oh, and lassos.
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I use Jergens Natural Glow...I always put it on at night right before I go to bed, and I've never had any trouble with it staining clothes/sheets.
I'm freakishly pale though, so even with haphazard useage, I still get results. But i love it, ebcause if I miss a spot or put too much on on eplace, it's gradual color, so it evens out the next application. It's pretty much foolproof, which I need since I'm a klutz
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I agree I've never had any problems with Jergens. Its a pretty good self tanner.
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
Jergens I tried but couldn't get past the smell...i guess it's different for everyone but that was the most off-putting scent of any product I've ever used, and that's saying something! It smells like rancid meat to me :P
Anyway, I will check out the vaseline one, thanks! Nautilus, LOL @ the pyjamas!
I do like the idea of the tinted moisturizers/gradual tanners, for the same reason as kitten...I'm a klutz when it comes to stuff like that! :)
(as for what I used before...first time it was soem generic shit, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. Second time was Coppertone, Endless Summer I believe...so I assumed most/all self-tanning lotions would make the same mess.

Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
^ugh, I know, the smell is irritating. That's why I used it before bed, so I could shower off the smell first thing in the morning, but still be tanner
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
So Ive been interested in the Jergens Natural glow lotion that I can apply everyday for gradual blah blah...but does it look TAN? or is it orangey or yellowish? And then where do you NOT put it on> face, armpits?
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I like to mystic with the clear formula- I hate bronzers that get on everything. When I can't spray tan I use Sublime Bronze Gel; it is clear, and it is bad ass.
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
i like the gradual tinted moisturisers, like johnsons holiday skin. works for me if i use it every other day, if i use it every day i start to look orange :p
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I wish I could use self tanners. I've tried several differant brands and they all make me sick. Something inherant in the formula of them all i must be allergic to I guess. I am usually violently nauseaus for hours after applying.
But I hate being so deathly pale(it doesnt look classy on me...I look sickly), so I guess back to the tanning salon for me.

I am deathly pale, like literally paper white, and the problem with most tanners is I look like an Oompa Loompa. But with Jergen's, is nice, subtle golden tan, no orange or yellow, just nice, darker skin.
And I put it everywhere, face included. If there's skin, Jergen's is on it :P
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
tanners are all have the same ingredient that makes you tan (DHA), so they will all turn you the same color.
The reason you get "orange" is because you are putting too much DHA on. Different products have different levels of it and different application methods, but it's all the same stuff. And this is why they all have the same smell, with the less offensive ones having less DHA.
You can make your own gradual tanner by mixing regular tanner with lotion. So if you are looking for a deeper tan, don't mix with lotion or use right after using lotion. If you want to "maintain" your tan without getting orange, you should.
And to answer the original question, what is staining your sheets is the bronzer or color guide in the lotion. It has nothing to do with the tan, but just there so you know you're applying ithe tanner evenly and it will wash off in your next shower. You can get tanners without the bronzer, but you have to be fairly experienced with applying tanners. On the plus side, you will not get it all over your clothing and sheets.
The tanner won't flake off. Your skin does. There is no tanner that can stop it, but with proper prep and maintanance, you can keep a self tan up to 10 days before having the exfoliate and start fresh.
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
^^^I suppose thats what I'm allergic to then...

:smiley_hoDont put the one you use on your body on your face. They have one specifically for the face.

As for putting it on, try to avoid putting it on your knees and elbows everyday as it really soaks up the color.:great:
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
Yeah, i'm allergic to the DHA in self tanners too!
I'm super white, and have never had a tan - but self tanners make me break out in a really itchy rash :(
It's not a pretty sight... heh heh
Re: another ? about self-tanning lotions
I've been using the one by Dove, and I really like it. It's a lot like the Jergens one in that it's a lotion, but I like the scent and it has a subtle shimmer to it. The color is great too! I wind up doing a tanning bed once a week and using the lotion every other day. Also the Dove one makes my skin feel super soft!
