Re: Need help with laptop
Try this:
When you boot up, right after you see your laptoplogo or post disappear (the initial image) hit the f8 key fast and furious (same way to get into safe mode)
Once the list is there, choose "Last Known Good"
Tell me what happens.
Re: Need help with laptop
I restart it and it still don't load up.
Re: Need help with laptop
All you see is the blue screen? Do you get mouse activity?
Re: Need help with laptop
It's the screen with the blue line going to the right over and over again. It says windows xp home.
Re: Need help with laptop
AHHHHH Ok, the XP logo, and system restore doesn't move it? That effing sucks...
In the step options I gave you before, did you get to the menu I was talking about? And Last Known Good does the same thing?
And you can get into safe mode?
Re: Need help with laptop
Re: Need help with laptop
Re: Need help with laptop
I'm starting it in safe mode right now.
Re: Need help with laptop
Ok in safemode, try and removing acrobat reader from add/remove programs... Though I do not think that's the problem.
How long have you let it sit at the logo screen?
Re: Need help with laptop
It wont let me remove it and I have let it sit for over 10 mins.
Re: Need help with laptop
Man, I just don't know what acrobat loads at the XP splash screen that makes it pause.... hmmmm do this in safemode:
Go to start > run
type in cmd
hit enter
at the prompt type in
cd c:\
hit enter then at the c:\> type
chkdsk /r
hit enter, and hit Y at the prompt
type in
shutdown /r /t 01
hit enter
Re: Need help with laptop
It says chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (y/n)
Re: Need help with laptop
the directions say type in Y at the prompt :D
Re: Need help with laptop
It worked it worked what did we do?
How did that fix it?
Mast your the best!!!
Re: Need help with laptop
Acrobat's new shit fucks with the registry ALL over the place. Only viewer that requires a reboot. Anyway, if it was not successful in it's install, it can result in that.
Glad I could help sir!
Re: Need help with laptop
Well now I don't have ie 7.0. I did a system restore did that lose ie 7.0?
Re: Need help with laptop
If you restored to a date previous of IE7... :( sorry bro
Re: Need help with laptop
I think the updater is updating it. Again Mast thanks a million!
Re: Need help with laptop
doncha miss the good old days of regedit /restore? lol
Re: Need help with laptop
hah, indeed. But believe it or not, I have a very unique view on backups.
Re: Need help with laptop
This is one reason why I love Norton Ghost.
Re: Need help with laptop
Norton Ghost is a fantastic process, but on a laptop such as his that doesn't support usb mountable drives or even have the space to partition to file copy, it's next to useless. Not to mention because it's so complete, it takes a ton of diligence and time to use, however in these small situations, a chkdsk is a preferable solution than say going back to the last "Ghost image" :D

Did I miss some information in this thread? I don't recall reading any of that.
Nevertheless, I still love Norton Ghost.
Re: Need help with laptop
No no no, I wasn't challenging, it's a great solution, I didn't want HIM to read and waste his time trying to implement it or ask if it's a viable solution.
Norton ghost is awesome, but it does require some technical know-how on a laptop with 1 drive.
