Daylight Savings Time and your computer
Just wanted to pass around a reminder that Daylight Savings Time in most of the U.S. and Canada starts this weekend which is three weeks earlier than it started last year. It will also run one week longer this year until the first weekend in November. This could cause glitches in your computer clock and perhaps some applications that run off of it.

If you have your computer set up for auto updates, there may be no problem as your OS has likely already updated to adjust to the change, but if you notice your clock is an hour back of where it should be come Sunday morning, this is likely the problem.
Where you can go for more info, or to get things fixed if needed:
Windows:

Mac:

This likely will also affect older electronic gadgets in your house that have an auto DST feature (like VCR's). You may want to either turn your auto DST off or move it east one time zone for the next three weeks (of course you'll have to tinker with it again later). If you have a TiVo you should be fine, as should your cell phone if it gets its time from the cell network.
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
I didnt know about this at all, its a strange idea
Thanks
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
Why is it so much different this year???
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
People will be turning on their lights and what not an hour later. Supposedly to save electricity. You will hopefully folks will be in bed in the morning and use one hourless of generated electrical power.
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
I'm so glad Phoenix doesn't participate in this daylight savings nonsense.. such a pain.
Although I do have to figure out if I'm currently Pacific or Mountain when I'm calling back east...

That's what I was gonna say! Daylight Savings is something I have not missed since moving here!! It's great not having to remember if I need to "Spring forward" or "Fall back!"
Damn, I'm gonna miss Arizona!

In 2005, myopic and attention-hungry Congressional representatives though it would be a great idea to change DST to save energy...not for a moment thinking about the cost to make the change--which is only for a two-year trial period. Details here.
This is actually causing more problems in IT than Y2K-related changes. I know I spent the better part of a week just doing DST changes and testing.
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
So daylight savings time is coming up? I HATE this one because I have to wake up an hour early! Although... it would explain why I'm up at 6am... My internal clock always has me waking up accordingly every time it changes. It's weird.
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
Congress is evil....why do they have to screw with things that aren't screwed up to start with??
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
So, that whole 4 weeks difference is gonna make that much difference in energy usage, to justify all the bullshit involved?? LOL!!
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
This is dumb, I wish the gov't would stop wasting our tax money on idiots who come up with plans like these...

The point is to reduce power peak demands and that occur in winter during the hours when lights go and and people arrive home (on average) and turn up the heat and lights too. Also normally the outside temp starts getting colder, so heating units turn on more frequently. Note that this time period changes greatly during the months; eg, in summer lights go on well after people get home.
The resulting increased power demand in many areas has to be met by turning on expensive oil-powered and natural gas power plants, which use much more costly fuel than the plants that are run all the time or most all the time, such as coal, nuclear, hydro etc. So it is not the shift in time, it is usage during peak demand periods.
The single time period switch is a great compromise when you think of how the time period shifts affect energy usage. More like 4 switch periods per year wouold be better, but that is not socially acceptable.
Re: Daylight Savings Time and your computer
So nice to see someone who remembers that some people use Macs (I use both but prefer Macs) and include information for both OSs. Thanks for the links.

I mean that a total of four one hour shifts would save a lot more energy. Besides setting a single one hour shift to cover only four more weeks will produce very minimal benefits. But it's the same work for each of us, just a different schedule.

Oooo, glad I caught this thread! I had no idea about the whole DLS being early this year! I agree, it is a pain in the ass!
