Pasta the best meal before work?
A couple weeks ago I had a big bowl of pasta before I went to work on a quiet week night and found I remained calm and cheerful the whole night despite it being slow and all the girls bitching.
I had pasta again last night before going to work, and the same thing.
I know pasta is supposed to be good for serotonin and good mood (well carbs anyway), so I was wonderin what anyone else thinks and suggest trying it out.
I dont eat pasta very often, maybe once a week or every two weeks, so I think I might take it up for work nights. :)

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
hi deary,
i think pastas contain slow release carbs which means you don't get those dips in blood sugar levels that make you tired and grumpy.
if you tried it and it seems to work then keep doing it :) even if you imagined that the pasta made you happier, if your brain believes it then chances are it'll work again next time.
Think i might have pasta tonight :D

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
Isn't that the same trick runners use to run marathons?
^^ She's right, it's slow release so you're blood sugar doesn't go straight up, then straight down after an hour.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
watch your portion with pasta 1/2 cup of cooked pasta is one serving and thats about 200 cals also make sure you are eating whole grain pasta white pasta is empty cals. A resturant pasta serving is about 3 cups which is 6 servings. I just toss my pasta in tomota souce its on 20 cals for a 1/4 cup add a small about amount of reduced fat cheese and there you go. I have to credit fit tv's diet dr thats where i learned this info.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
Blood sugar, not seretonin. Seretonin comes from tryptophan, which is not in pasta. Tho high carbs might make it easier for the tryptophan to get to your brain...?

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
Carbs (and fats for that matter) are excellent energy sources when, and ONLY WHEN, the calories they result in are burned off. The reason being because a carbohydrate is basically a starch which breaks down into a sugar ->
These sugars, 3 or more if a complex carbohydrate (ex: potatoes, bread, flour, pasta, rice, dry beans, corn) then convert to fat if not burned off -
:O
Hence Olympians report DOUBLING their caloric intake at meals ingested specifically right before an event:
Menu Fit 4 an Olympian - (Calories are listed as per food item)
1) 2 Double cheeseburgers (490 Calories; 234 Calories from Fat)
2) 2 Large fries (570 Calories; 270 Calories from Fat)
3) 1 Coca-Cola (310 Calories; DECEPTIVELY 0 Calories from Fat, yet look again; -> 86.0g Total Carbohydrates, meaning 86 covert grams of sugar -> resulting in 86 grams of fat at a daily fat value of 29% !!!).
Their "energy snack" contains a whoppping 2,430 calories in one meal sitting - RDI is 2,000 calories !!!
Whoo! Okay, that quickie is over - Hoped you liked it; LoL.
Go on girl - dance your butt off and have fun! I notice that they seem to be more into it the more you are enjoying yourself during the dances.
:flirt:

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
Krchab what kind of tomatoe sauce do you use? I am switching to whole grain pasta this week. Also, what is the best kind of cheese? I do not like the grated kind, but i am looknig for a good kind to add on sandwiches, melt on veggies...ect. My family brings home the deli kind sliced.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I use just plain tomoto sauce that come in the can not a speghti sauce and i use grated cheese the kind that come in the bag not the spinkale kind and i get fat free but 2% is good that 75 cals per 1/4 cup and fat free has 45 cals per 1/4 cup. Hopw that helps.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
When i eat it I eat low carb pasta w/ pesto sauce or I make my own. I'm italian so I love pasta, but it makes me fat :'(

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I love cheese but i try to avoid it because it causes my skin to break out so i dont add it to a bowl of pasta.
i cooked two handfuls of penne, added basil & oregan tomato sauce, six mushrooms and 3 slives of cured honey roast ham. i was cooking for me and my mom, but she didnt come home early enough so i ate it all. finished the rest after a power nap before work.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I wish I could eat something higher carb before work! Usually if I eat pasta(whole wheat) or even brown rice, I puff up and look bloated. I usually stick to fruit and soup w/salad instead. A big mug of tea and a couple of ephedrines keep me smiling and motivated to work! You gals are lucky....I love pasta, just can't eat it much.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I love pasta before work. It fuels my body so I have more energy, I'm hungry less often while at work, and I can handle alcohol in my stomach better!

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I love pasta ANYTIME. I've actually really been craving Macaroni Grill lately even though I hate chain restaurants. I would kill for a big bowl of the create-your-own thing they have... whole-wheat penne, spicy arrabiata sauce, artichoke hearts, spinach, and whole roasted garlic cloves sprinkled with freshly-grated parmesan! :yummy:

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I love pasta but I can't eat it before work because it make me really bloated. I don't think I digest it that well because after a bowl, I look like I'm 4 months pregnant. Not the best look for the club. Before work I try to have fish or chicken with a big salad and some almonds. I'll also have a cup of coffee for extra energy.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
Pasta, along with anything carb, is good...in REASONABLE amounts. Carbs are quickly absorbed, easily digested, and keep you feeling fuller (longer than what most people believe) longer. Pasta is good for this. Seratonin is a hormone release that affects the brain as well as the entire central nervous system. Smiling even releases seratonin. One of the foods most responsible for happiness/mood control is chocolate.
Me, personally, I eat anything I want for my energy. I don't believe in calorie counting and I see girls looking at labels and hear them, "Like, Oh MY GOD...this whole serving has .1 calories...I'm going to throw this up for a month." If you eat a balanced diet and your intake of fats and sugars are moderate, you should never have a problem. "Low fat", "Low carb", "fat free", etc...you are buying the label, because where they claim this miracle, they overcompensate something else just as responsible for "fat" AND you are sacrificing taste for it. Either way, there is no magic pill. Hell, I eat anything and everything, I'm 5'4" and I weigh 150 lbs. I just work my ass off and I'm all muscle. Control...don't suffer.

Actually, half a cup of plain a' la dente pasta has only 100 calories. It's a full cup that has 200, which is still no more hefty then, say, a lean steak of 100g. You do have to watch amounts though (as with any food, with the possible exception of lettuce) and obviously the fat contained in some sauces.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
pasta makes me feel bloated and heavy... so I wouldn't personally eat it before work. I do eat it if I'm running a race the next morning - but that's because it has time to digest and settle.
Also, whole wheat has a much lower glycemic index than white - if you're looking for a slow, steady release of energy.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I love pasta too, but I only eat Semolina flour pasta. I would strongly suggest this. Semolina is what pasta was made from originally, it has a better texture and flavour, and the best part is that it is full of protein (way more that regular). It is alot harder to find, but usually I can get it at any Italian deli. It is a touch more expensive, but much better for you. Try it!

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I can't eat pasta right before work because it bloats me and makes my belly look pouchy. I have to eat something low-carb before work. I love pasta though! I eat the whole wheat kind now and even though the whole wheat kind contains much more fiber, it is still fairly high in carbs. I treat myself to a small portion of it once or twice a week. I use tomato sauce on it too instead of regular spaghetti sauce-lower in carbs.

Personally, I don't find this to be true. For me, protein and fats keep me fuller longer.
A nice big salad with chopped egg and/or cheese with olive oil and vinegar, and a few slices of turkey rolled up with low fat mayo was a typical before work meal for me.
I would also eat a small bowl of Dreamfield's pasta (coated in extra protein, so low in carbs) with some peanut butter and low sodium soy sauce.
I don't count calories either as I eat low glycemic. I typically eat right around 1500 a day but could easily go up to 2000 without gaining any weight because of the way I eat.
This keeps me at 5'2" and 100-105lbs. I was so afraid of gaining a ton of weight after stopping dancing but eating right helped keep me at a healthy weight.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
1500-2000...please tell me you Don't mean calories!!!! At a 2000 calorie diet daily...we are talking 8 large strawberries a day alone!
Carbs keep you feeling fuller longer because most people eat a LOT of carbs, they expand the quickest in the stomach...making you feel almost TOO full...and who wants to eat when they are too full? See my point? I don't eat pasta before work because, quite frankly, if I'm full...I'm going to sleep! ;D
Some of the foods you girls are talking about are sounding just soooo good right now...to the kitchen with me!

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
^I'd say 1500-2000 calories is pretty standard, no? Eight large strawberries would be about 50 calories.
I'm confuzzled.
Back to on-topic: I worked with a girl who swore she could only eat sushi before work. It was the only thing that didn't make her fart.

Re: Pasta the best meal before work?
I love pasta. I will have to see if I can stomach eating it before work in the mornings.
