While I am no polework teacher I can tell you what worked for me as I got better at my spins.
Try walking around the pole with one hand on it a few times prior to doing your spin. This helps build momentum and thus gives you a faster spin which should help you get more rotations.
Always start a spin from a 4 step saunter (walk), and be sure to drop your shoulder before you execute a spin. Not only does this allow for more momentum, you're protecting your shoulders.
What kind of spin are you trying? If you are "feet forward" for the spin (reverse grab, cradle, corkscrew) roundhouse your leg as you launch into it...dont kick straight out.
If you are doing a "hip forward" spin (backspin, fairey, any of the security swings), you use your body weight and positions of your hands to determine the amount of spin you get.
...Push off on the leg closest to the pole and swing the other leg in the direction you're trying to go. After pushing off with that leg, your left arm (if your a righty) should be reaching across your body to grab and slightly push away from the pole. That left arm keeps your body from slamming into the pole. Also, dont grab too tightly with your left hand because you would probably stop the spin or only make one full rotation around the pole. To gain momentum after your spin slows down, swing or rotate your head in the direction of the spin.
So remember, the left arm controls speed and distance after take-off (if you're a righty), and your head gains momentum when your spin slows down.
I swing my outer leg all the way out before bringing it into a spin. This usually makes my spins faster because I've built more momentum by swinging my leg out.
