deciding what to go to school for...
After long talks with my man, I've decided it's time to think about going to school for something. I'm 24 and I know I can't dance forever. I know 24 isn't old, but I think I should have something to fall back on. I plan to retire when I hit 30 (MABYE). I love my job as a dancer, but trust me, there are times when I do feel burnt out and just don't want to work. I started dancing right after I turned 19 and I can't even imagine what it's like to go back to a "normal" job. You know, where you actually have to go in when you're supposed to.
Anyway..........I was considering massage therapy or cosmetology school. Anybody go to school for this and if so, is it something you enjoy? And also, does cosmetology school cover everything? Like hair, make-up, skin care, etc. I really hope I have the motivation to even stay in school. These past five years, I've gotten so used to doing what I want, when I want, getting up at whatever time of the day. Stripping is such a flexible job!!!
Part of the reason I've put off school for so long is because I have NO CLUE what I want to go to school for. What are some of you college girls' majors???? Just curious.;)

Art history major with a minor in classical studies.

If you want to do massage or cosmetology I'm sure someone on SW has gone. Also, you can just go to the schools and talk to the teachers and students about how it all works and if they are happy with their jobs after school. Or you can always start taking classes at a local community college and see what interests you.
I'm a chemistry and forensic major. Thinking about just doing chemistry major to get out 2 years faster.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
I went to massage therapy school, but I'm a finance major now. Honestly, from the people I went to school with, there are very few that are actually practicing massage. My sister just finished cosmetology school, hers included nails and hair, she also did classes on extensions and is planning to become an estetician. The more you want to know, the more expensive the price.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
Nursing major here.
*Wonderful pay
*Excellent benefits
*In demand....;)
Honestly money isn't everything, but it sure makes things a whole lot easier....thats why im choosing Nursing as my major.
P.S. Im not a girl but at least you have another suggestion.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
When I was younger, I wanted to be a nurse. Now, not so much. I'm sure the job offers great pay and amazing benefits, but don't nurses work LONG hours? Obviously, I'm just a bit of a lazy bitch. I want to eventually have a family and I don't want to be at work all the time.
Sxybrat, I do have a friend who went to school for massage and she never uses her degree. She waitresses at a restaurant. She told me the same thing you did. I wonder why people don't stick with it??
TM: My bf said the same thing about just going to a community college to see what I like. I think that's what I might try first. I actually miss having homework and LEARNING new things!!!
I used to want to be a teacher also, but the pay sucks. They always say that if you are passionate about it, the money doesn't matter. So I guess I'm not that passionate about it. I even did a teaching program my senior year in high school where I taught first graders for half of the school day. I was in the Future Teachers of America club. But I just didn't have the patience for a classroom full of children!!!!
Ahhh....I feel like a kid trying to decide what to be when I grow up!!
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
Thats how I started out funlatina. I took a easy math class and a nutrition class. I loved nutrition and the things that effected the body in crazy ways. I wanted to be a nutritionist but found it boring. So I came to the conclusion that a science career would be best for me.
When your mind is jogging at school all day it keeps going for the days in between to think about pathways in your life. I think school opens your mind in more ways than academically.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
I figured I might have to take a math class. I did AWFUL in math in high school. I even had a tutor but there is just something about numbers that just doesn't work in my brain!!! I did very well in my other classes tho. What was it about being a nutritionist that you found boring? Also, how long are you in school for majoring in science?
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
Oh god forever in school. It will take me about 4 years starting next semester to get an AS in Chemistry. Thats if I drop the forensics program. If I dont its another 2 years of schooling for that and also a associates in that in the end. After the Chemistry only for 4 years I have another 2 at the UC.
Being a nutritionist sounded fun but not for me. I looked into many of the fields I could go in to afterwards and none of them interested me. Besides, now Im going for chemistry I'll be making nice money when I get out and less likely to take a huge pay cut when I quit dancing to work full time in a regular job.
Math is hard and Im slowly learning. My tip I wanna share is do some math everyday. Not just your bills but the homework. Do an extra 5 problems from another part of the book if you run out of homework just to keep your mind sharp. It helps alot. My school is cool enough to have a tutor lab and a free 30min tutor sessions.
Sorry so long but after some threads Ive made on here myself Ive learned to just take it slow semester by semester and eventually I'll be done.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
Latina: Most people don't continue with massage because it is REALLY hard on your body, and the pay isn't as great as they advertise.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
I'm a foreign language major. I'm such a big geek -- learning new words makes me so excited. At the moment I'm studying German, French, and Japanese, but I'm also fluent in Spanish. I hope to be a highly paid interpreter one day, but I'll settle for a modest salary if it means I get to live in Europe.
But I really didn't choose my major because I knew I could do something with it -- i chose it because it's what I enjoy studying. I shouldn't have trouble getting a job, but if you're only going to school to get some sort of certificate to fall back on, you'd probably be better off with a trade school than a university.

If you become really skilled at extensions, you can make some serious cash and you will have plenty of dancer friends to offer your services to.

I tried to get a double major with that being my second but it wasn't offered at my university and the linguistics program just didn't do it for me. :-\ It would be nice to put my languages to use though.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
^^^ When I found out that the uni that gave me the biggest scholarship didn't have a linguistics major, I was totally bummed out, but I didn't want to throw away all that money, so I went with the "language" major, where you choose 3 languages and study them, and take the few linguistics courses offered. It actually turned out way better that I'm doing the language major instead of the linguistics one, because I've also found out that linguistics really doesn't do it for me, lol. Sometimes linguistics takes all the fun out of learning languages. It's an interesting field and everything, but I'm glad it's not my major.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
My daughter is in cosmetology school and hers includes hair, skin, makeup and nails. I am also sending her to some continuing education classes for extensions; actually a few different kinds, and furthering her makeup classes to be certified by different cosmetic companies.
This is something she can always find work in, do on the side, fall back on; whatever.
She goes Mon through Fri from 8AM to 2PM. She started in September and will finish up in late May...in other words, it's two semesters.
There are so many kinds of work that you can do with this type of education. She has even expressed interest in working in theater in NYC.
Whatever you decide, make sure it's something you want. It would be horrible to go to school to do nothing with it or hate what you do.
Re: deciding what to go to school for...
^^^^So your daughter will be completely done in May? That's pretty quick!! Yeah, I also would love to take some classes for extensions. I want to go to school for this not only for a possible job, but to have the knowledge too. If I don't end up using it as a career, at least I'll know a lot about hair and skin care!! I don't want to go to school and waste money on something I will never use. Like you said, there are so many kinds of work that I could do with this type of education.
