This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
I haven't lived with my mom in almost 4yrs. My mom just called me a second ago and said some man call stating that he had a private, personal matter concerning me. My mom asked if she could take a message, and he said no. My mom then called and gave me the number.
I called, and a woman answered. She immediately asked for my phone number, and I repeated my moms number, NOT my personal home number. She said, "for verification purposes, I'll need the last 4 digits of your social security number" I refused telling her that that is an invasion of my privacy. She then started getting snappy talking about, "well if you can't supply that information then I have no idea who I am talking to." again, I refused to give her the last 4 digits of my social. She continued to get more hostile with me. So she told me if I wasn't going to give her this information then they'll just keep calling me every day. I told her that she cannot do that because it's against the law. Any correspondance they want to have with me they need to do so in writing. She then yelled, talking about, "no that's your job to handle your own business. It's up to you to write us" But yet, she didn't tell me who she was when I originally called.
So, after I hung up on her, I dialed the number in the google. 513-605-7537 The information that came up surprised me: General Revenue (Sallie Mae collections)
Now, I'm wondering why they decided to call me when I'm in school...I'm not going to give them any of my personal information. Any ideas???

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
^^^ I sure hope that there aren't any discrepancies between your actual income and the amount of 'family income' that was reported on your Student Loan applications. It's that time of year where IRS computers are crunching tax return numbers, college bursar's office financial reports, and making automatic reports to Sallie Mae.

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
Do you owe money from your student loans that was due? Perhaps from an earlier stint in school? Check your credit report. annualcreditreport.com is the real free one. If you owe them money, it will be on there!

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
^^^^Nope, I just pulled it up the other day. All of my student loans are in "good standing" and I get the "ok" box for every month stating that i pay on time. But the kicker is that I have no loans through Sallie Mae. So I dunno WTF

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
Be careful, I've heard a lot of scams going around trying to get your info. If they call again maybe give a fake last 4 digits and see what they say.

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
Do you have any student loans? They may have been sold to Sallie Mae, and Sallie Mae was calling to let you know your loan was sold to them. I dont know why you didnt get a letter tho....

I went on creditboards and posted my issue. An ex-loan lady sent me to a gov link that basically shows you all the loans you've ever had school related. Nothing on there has Sallie Mae listed at all. But even if it did, I'm still in school, I dont have to pay back my loans until I either a) graduate or b) 6 months after I stop attending for whatever reason.

That's what I was thinking about doing...I mean I just dont understand why they'd call my mom though. She's in a completely different city. Hell, I've been living in the same apartment for a little over 3yrs now :-\ It's not THAT hard to find me..

could one of your relatives be up to no good? You know, I got a few traffic tickets, while I was stationed in Germany! Is it possible that someone fudged a student loan app. with your info as the borrower, and collected funds as you etc.?
We all remember the drama FarrahHoliday went through with her peeps>:(
You know, we don't get to choose our family members girl! Hopefully I'm way off:-\

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
It's most likely a scam. I recently got a similar call, this lady actually wanted my bank account number to verfiy whatever and when I refused, she got very hostile. Be careful, never give out information whatsoever unless you're absolutely sure it's legit, these dsys you never know, people will use all kinds of tactis to get money.

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
Skip tracers will call everybody in the phone book with a cartain last name trying to find that person or their relatives. It's perfectly possible that they're looking for someone with the same name as you, but not you...

I dunno, my first and last name are pretty weird..ok "uncommon"

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
eep. Then I dunno. If it's a legit company, which apparently Sallie Mae is, then I don't see what harm the last four digits of your SSN could do. Maybe give it to them so they can tell you what the f*** this is all about.

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
If there is any question about your loans...get the name of the person who's calling you. Then, ask for an extension (they HAVE to have one) and call the MAIN phone number for SallieMae back. If this person is legitimate, then you will be able to reach them that way.
Never, ever give your personal information over the phone. Ever.

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
Ok, update:
I just got off the phone w/ NSLDS (National Student Loans Data System whichis apart of Federal Financial Aid) people and I was transferred to a girl who can pull up my loans to see who my servicers are. I told her my situation and she said every step I made was what I was supposed to do. She said my accounts are all in excellent standing PLUS I dont have any loans out of Sallie Mae. She told me there are alot of scams going on, and from the way I described how the girl was talking to me yesterday it could've well been a scam they were trying to pull on me. She told me that I'll need to call the Fraud Investigator General (something like that) so that they can add the phone number they called me from on watch. So, now I'm feeling just a little bit better.

They are basically saying that I'm being irresponsible and it's no my moms responsibility to be worried about my loans. I told the one chic, I never even said my mom is responsibile for my loans I've been on my own 4yrs. Then she pulls up a quote when I misstyped where I said something about my mom is responsible or something..
This is what the bitch on the other site wrote in my thread:

As Lynn pointed out, you need to get your facts straight:
-Fact: Stafford unsubsidized loans will accrue interest from the day they are disbursed, regardless of deferment status.
-Fact: the company that called you is a debt collector, who, as Lynn mentioned, is contracted by many guarantors (and schools) to collect debts, some of which are not even educational in nature. Whether you took out loans from Sallie Mae is therefore completely irrelevent.
-Fact: Office of the Inspector General is who you call about fraud, but you don't even know why they are calling you, so you would have no way of knowing whether or not anything fraudulent was going on.
Stop making excuses, contradicting yourself, and saying things that make it completely clear you don't even understand your own student loans, and find out why they are calling you!!!

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
Just a basic word of advice: If people start acting like assholes on the phone, they're usually after something they shouldn't be and are trying to intimidate you. Simply ask why they are calling, if they cannot give you any info, just simply say "I'm sorry I cannot provide you with sensetive information over the phone until you reveal what you are calling about. I can be reached by mail, and I assume if I have an account with you you have that information. Have a nice day". Click.

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
Just ignore the creditboards folks CK. Clearly they're just being assholes.

Re: This dude called my mom trying to get info on me!!!!! HELP!
It's a scam sccccccccccccccaaaaaaaaaaaam scam.
They're not suppossed to get hostile with you, and like someone or a couple of people mentioned, hostility is a sign of them trying to intimidate you....
Be veerrry cautious. And giving out your last 4 digits of ss number can reaaly fuck you over. It can do loooooots of harm. Because when I try changing an option on another family member's cell phone bill, they asked for the last four ss digits of that person..... and otherwise you can impersonate that person if you know the last 4 digits.
Don't give in to the idiots. They're trying to fuck you over. Like was mentioned, tell them to mail you something if they want to find something out, etc. There are plenty of very intricate, really well-constructed scams. And it could very much be possible that some employees at the, what was it, the IRS or the Sallie Mae collections place are doing scams on other people, because they readily have their info available. Just like how lots of people working at doctor's offices can fuck someone over, do identity theft, etc because medical charts often have social security numbers listed, credit card numbers, and such (and perhaps it'd be wise that with future doctors./ current doctor, have your patient identification number switched from your social secrutiy number to some other number....you never know what the office staff, or even the doctor her/himself might be up to).
It pays big time to be cautious, and just assume that someone is trying to cause you trouble.
I remember someone on this board suggested I read the book The Gift of Fear (because I was dealing with a call I thought was harrassing, and not a booty call)..that might help you. Or maybe go to amazon.com and look up books on how to protect yourself from identity theft.
These days people are really getting pinched for money, and they're addicted to painkillers and such, and want to earn a quick buck. Be ahead of the game, girls. Dont' let the bad ones destroy you.
