housing in NYC, esp. low-income or rent-controlled
I was wondering if any familiar-with-housing-in-nyc ladies could help me out with this.
I've seen ads in the paper for rent-controlled and low-income housing. Does anyone know if cosigners are allowed?
Do you think low-income housing places tend to have "sketchier" people living in them, so therefore it's not worth it to live there, despite that you can find a studio for less than 600.00 per month to live in?
I'm looking for a safe, relatively quiet (not by highway or main road) area in Queens, Manhattan, brooklyn, ideally my own place. ANy suggestions for brokers, good website ( I already know the ones like craigslist or the newspapers)?
THanks so much!:)
Re: housing in NYC, esp. low-income or rent-controlled
I grew up in NYC. Lived there for 29 years till yesterday. I just moved today to the west coast.
Good luck finding anything for yourself in that price range. You'll be lucky if you find anything in that price range. If you do, look out for the neighborhood. It will probably be unfavorable for you. There will be sketchier people. Likely a homeless shelter/ adult home for the mentally ill or a mental hospital near by. Try to sign up up for low income housing. You will be put on a long waiting list and must not exceed a specfic yearly income.
Also, Try the boroughs instead of manhattan. The farther you're away from the city, the cheaper. Brokers fees are typically one months rent for all boroughs except manhattan, about 15% or something like that, of the years rent for brokers in manhattan. Try a broker in a legit location/website. Make sure its real nice. Find a broker in the neghborhood you want to live in first. It'll make seeing apartments easier to get to. Reality is, you're most likely going to find a roomate. You may need a cosigner with them too.
Good luck!
