Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
I live in a small town and it seems kind of laid back. Applebee's, Red Lobster and Ihop are all hiring immediately and I just need something temporary until about May/June.
Applebee's & Red Lobster have other positions like hostesses, dishwashers and cooks in addition to serving. Which one of these would be the least stressful? ( I couldn't get hired as a cook since I don't have any experience.) Or should I just go with serving since I can get tips?
Anyone worked at any of the places?

IHOP seriously sucks as a hostess. Don't do it, I did. Serving is really your best bet if you can handle it.

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
I didn't enjoy hospitality, primarily because it was bad for my eating disorder to be around that much food. However, the people I worked with were nice and if I didn't have any food issues I'm sure I wouldn't have minded it.

applebees and redlobster = good tips

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
^^ I LOVESSSSSS me some Red Lobster. Go there and try it out. I rarely see messed up orders at Redlobster because seafood is either done or it isn't...Whereas if you choose applebees, people will want a million subs, made this way over that way..to much work. Go to RedLobster.
Actually I was thinking about going to this restaurant and taking up a waitress position.

I strongly believe everyone should wait tables at some point in life. Makes you appreciate going out for dinner.

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
Ok, sorry to kinda/sorta jump off topic but I was wondering: Ok, so lets say I do go to apply at the upscale restaurant. Would it be wrong for me to make "contacts" while working..you know if a business guy comes in for lunch, and he's feeling the Cinammon, is it wrong to tell him to come see me @ my other job??

Waitressing will definitely make you appreciate dancing, if nothing else.
I firmly believe that waitressing is the most degrading job on the planet. I did it for ten years, and I will suck dicks at the bus stop before I ever do it again. Seriously.

^^Hey isn't that apart of the story you said about your one friend who was waitressing with you?? That story is hilarious!

If you can keep it on the super down low, go for it. But I imagine you'd get in trouble if your manager found out.
I suppose it really depends on the restaurant.

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
Thank you everyone for your replies. I'm not the most social person and I already have to be that while dancing, so being a waitress might be too much 'people interaction' for me. I think I'll apply for a behind the scenes job instead.
Hey CK I found a blog by someone who works at Red Lobster....it's a little insider info if you are interested.

Umm yea, I think I"m going to go hurl now :-[

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
^Yup, same thing when I worked at the Texas Roadhouse. People would snarf that bread down (because it was free) and take extra home. I know there were people who ate in excess of 1500 calories in bread and butter only. That is, before their butter slathered steak covered in cheese and fried onions. :O
Cin, if you were my waitress... I'd leave you my business card and a huge tip!! ;)

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
People have no idea how much butter goes into the average restaurant meal. It's the magical ingredient that makes the food taste so much better! You'd never use that much butter at home but they don't think twice about it in a restaurant. BTW, men also tend to use much more butter in their cooking than women do.
You can make those biscuits at home pretty easily, BTW. Just mix up some Bisquick and a ton of garlic powder or minced garlic, and add shredded cheddar and water or skim milk until it's a doughy consistency. Drop it onto a baking sheet by spoonfuls and bake it up about 20 minutes. Boom, cheddar-garlic biscuits. If you want you can top them with garlic butter like the Lobster does but they don't really need it.

Try dishwasher. My first part-time job in high school. Now THAT's degrading.

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
I was a dishwasher once too. Agreed, horrible, horrible, probably the most miserable working experience ever. Plus they made me clean out the deep fryers.
And one of those Red Lobster biscuits won't kill ya, they are damn good!

hahhaha as I was reading the OP I was getting ready to respond, "whatever you do, DON'T DISH!!!!" I worked at Denny's as a hostess/busser for a bit, simultaneously, and really liked it... but only because the bussing was filling in for the lazy bussers so the servers tipped me out on top of my hourly wages from hosting. }:D
i agreed to try dishing just to see... i really enjoy washing dishes at home, but lemme tell ya.. there are NO similarities. Plus, I couldn't get a handle on the hose, the water pressure... I was sopping wet and spent the entire shift like a cold wet puppy. It was terrible and I was freezing. I repeat... dishwashing.... not for the faint of heart....

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
I tried to get a hostess job once but at 20, I was told I was too old... ::) They only hired 16 and 17 year olds to do it.
Yeah... great first impression. Teeny boppers.

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
Pooka's done some dirty work in her life. My first job was the bus boy at a chain Pizza Buffet Restaurant. Talk about DISGUSTING. I left every night in tears and wanting to barf. But I learned a work ethic there from my asshole boss (if you out there, Arlen, fuckkk you) that will stick with me for the rest of my life. After that I worked at Johnny Carinos Italian...MUCH nicer....but...yeah restaurant jobs keep me appreciating dancing.

Men put too much ANYTHING in their own cooking.. simply because they figure more = better. :O

Re: Is working in a restaurant really that terrible?
I don't see how dishwashing is more degrading than serving. At least as a dishwasher you're in the back, away from the asshole customers who expect you to do everything but lick their shoes clean for a pissy $4 tip ::) I have done about every job you can do in a restaurant over a span of 8 years, and I have to say I liked cooking best, followed by ice cream maker (obvious reasons), followed by dishwashing. I'd rather clean up messes in the back, even fryers and grills, over serving. Hostessing wasn't too bad (but the pay sucked) and cashiering wasn't bad either. Car hop at Sonic was kinda fun. But serving sucked musty donkey balls!! I'm with Yek on that one. I'll suck dicks at the busstop before I do that shit again.
