"Assault weapons" ban may return
Lets try to have a calm discussion of the pros and cons of this. This is a modified version of the ban that Clinton signed in 94 that Bush let lapse in 04. Well the Brady campaign is trying to re start it with some new things banned. The link to some of the Brady stuff can be found at http://www.bradycampaign.org/facts/faqs/?page=awb Thats an FAQ link and doesnt list everything. So do you think this is a good idea? bad idea? why

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
"Semi-Automatic Assault Weapons" are not much different than your standard hunting rifle. Fully Automatic is a different story.

Turn your enemies against one another. If that fails, use pirates.

Lawn Jarts will do the trick. I am a bad ass with a lawn jart. I was actually once attacked by a band of Ninja's that had been hired by a SWAT team. It ended up being a very grisly scene...but the problem was taken care of...

Very wise. I installed some pirates a few years ago and I am VERY happy with the results. No ninjas, no Marines, no IRS agents.

Good idea because of the following things which are mentioned in the OP link-
'Assault weapons are commonly equipped with some or all of the following combat features:
A large-capacity ammunition magazine, enabling the shooter to continuously fire dozens of rounds without reloading. Standard hunting rifles are usually equipped with no more than 3 or 4-shot magazines.
A folding stock on a rifle or shotgun, which sacrifices accuracy for concealability and for mobility in close combat.
A pistol grip on a rifle or shotgun, which facilitates firing from the hip, allowing the shooter to spray-fire the weapon. A pistol grip also helps the shooter stabilize the firearm during rapid fire and makes it easier to shoot assault rifles one-handed.
A barrel shroud, which is designed to cool the barrel so the firearm can shoot many rounds in rapid succession without overheating. It also allows the shooter to grasp the barrel area to stabilize the weapon, without incurring serious burns, during rapid fire.
A threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor, which serves no useful sporting purpose. The flash suppressor allows the shooter to remain concealed when shooting at night, an advantage in combat but unnecessary for hunting or sporting purposes. In addition, the flash suppressor is useful for providing stability during rapid fire, helping the shooter maintain control of the firearm.
A threaded barrel designed to accommodate a silencer, which is useful to assassins but clearly has no purpose for sportsmen. Silencers are illegal so there is no legitimate purpose for making it possible to put a silencer on a weapon.
A barrel mount designed to accommodate a bayonet, which obviously serves no sporting purpose.'

OK T-10 the question I have to you is what do you think the ban will solve? and what do you believe the second ammendment was written for?

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
The Second Amendment is the Citizens check on bad government. Citizens should have access to any firearms of their choice. It is their Right.
Person with Gun equals Citizen. A Person without Gun equals Subject. I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney than for ride with Ted Kennedy.
The Second Amendment was not written to protect hunting or sporting purposes. The Second was written to place the means to overthrow a despotic government in the hands of the Citizenry. It does not provide for a National Guard a law that was written a hundred years later, and to have an Army is already written in.

Yep...
"A well-regulated militia being necessary for the security of a free state; the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
NOTE: the semi-colon means a lot.
People can argue all they want about the pros and cons of weapons bans, that is what freedom is about. What they cannot argue about is the intent of that phrase. It was stating that a military is necessary for security. Because of this necessity the people needed to be allowed to hold the means to defend themselves against that military. Without that means, they really are not free.

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
Funny responses.
Assault weapons are for assaults.
Hell if you're going to assault someone/ something - do it right. I'm all for having one. Pass me the rocket launcher and tank too!}:D

Well said. I was expecting to hear more people for the ban. It is a welcome change to hear people that agree its bs.

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
When the Second Amendment went into effect, guns were so unreliable, you could stand two feet from someone and *still* miss him. It was believed that eve if the public had guns, the price or ineffectiveness of the guns available would prevent most citizens from purchasing them.

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
I am a little unclear on what you are saying.
Are you leading to guns were expected to fail back then so we were allowed to have them as they rarely worked? and had they been more reliable we would not have been allowed to have them?
-
Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
Well that's like legalizing bombs back in 1700 and then trying to argue that today we have a natural right to own atomic bombs.

Considering you oppose gun control I doubt you are honestly interested in my answers to those questions except maybe to use them as an excuse to go on some sort of rant.
I answered the OP question before I realized it's wingnut agenda but I see now that it was a mistake for me to have taken the original question and post at face value.

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
Whether , or not, a gun ban would make our society safer is not the real debate to me. It is a question of rights and freedoms. I find it to be wrong to imprison someone that has committed NO OFFENSE against another. Basically, making these illegal would make criminals of people who never have, or never would harm someone. We need fewer of these types of laws rather than more.

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
I tried to get a handgun a few months back. I had multiple people tell me I wouldn't get approved in my county anyway. And with all the hassle of finding 4 people that live in my county to swear i'm not crazy and get it individually notarized on paper in quadruplet I let it go. But i guess if I wanted to I could carry a shotgun.WTF???
My neighborhood is not that nice. But apparently you have to be the criminal to own a gun. Waaay not fair.

Wingnut? Don't think so. I just believe in individuality and freedom. They are precious. I stand up for peoples rights to be themselves, regardless if I agree with them, or not (as long as though actions do not harm others).
I think it is fundamentally wrong to make criminals of people that are not harming others. Is that a wingnut agenda?

I highly doubt that the framers of the constitution knew what type of weapons civilization would have created 200 years later.

I am just trying to have a good discussion about the topic. I most certainly opose all forms of gun control. I do however have an intrest it what others have to say. hense the thread. A reasonable debate never hurt anyone.

Of course they didnt. You and I have no idea of what anything will be in a couple hundred years from now. That point is made by many anti gun people. Now lets open it up a little. The 2a was largely made so the general public could defend themselves and have the ability to overthrow the gov if needed. (I am not saying i have any desire to overthrow the gov) by that idea its obvious that they had the intention of us "the people" having the same weaponry as the gov. Now lets take one small example of that claim. One specific thing the Brady campaign is trying to ban is bayonet lugs. This is a part that allows you to attach a bayonet to a rifle. am I to believe that those who wrote the 2a did not understand we would have bayonets? The war that they just finished fighting was fought with them specificaly. While I do not desire to have a bayonet the 2a says its my right as a citizen of the US. Never in the 2a does it state anything about only owning weapons for hunting or sporting reasons.
So the question is what is the purpose of this ban? What is it supposed to help? What do you believe it will help?

Hmm. Reasonable debate and interest in non-likeminded opinions hasn't been my experience when dealing with several politically conservative people around here. Quite the opposite actually, hence my earlier responce.
I will however be doing some further reading of this thread out of my own interest in the subject and the various opinions. I wish you luck with getting a good discussion out of this topic. 8)

Re: "Assault weapons" ban may return
Thanks, I have been doing a lot of reading myself lately. I posted this here and on a forum that I admin because Another that I am a member of has been having a great discussion on it. Sure a few people get angry and such. However I believe that adults can have a good discussion and be willing to hear both sides of the discussion. I am open to hear more reasons that People feel bans should be in effect. I suppose part of it is wanting to hear some reason that actualy works. As of yet I havent seen any.
Penn and Teller have a show called "bullshit" on showtime. I sometimes agree with what they say and sometimes dont. They did a fairly good show on gun control a while back. http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...46864220&hl=en you can watch it on google vids there.
